Pitino

Had the benefit of talking to many SJU media members at the SJU/SHU game who have far more access to their program including the underbelly than the media for the Pirates have.

I have known some of these members for quite some time and trust them very much. They have in the past given me info that has come to pass re SJU.

If Pitino was the HC at Seton Hall, would our NIL be any different than it is? Would he accept that our donors might be tapped out and play the hand he was dealt? No way.....we absolutely would be much higher.

Pitino understands what he needs and does what he has to do to get it. He would probably be on the Winners Circle of the next Formula 1 Race in a jumpsuit yucking it up with Kurtz. He understands the business side of the sport and knows how to promote and network. He'd be using the media to get his message out, he'd convince the school to invest more into everything. He'd be meeting all fans with a high net worth and convince them to partner with him and the school.

He'd also use our horrible season as proof that we have to have more donations. He did it last season. Remember his rant after we beat them. Intimated that he didn't have the players and said he needed to replace most of his key players in the Portal. The next day Repole said he'd donate whatever it takes.

If my memory is correct, he also used that rant to motivate his team. Which it seemingly did. Because they played themselves back into the bubble and if you asked any associated or who watches college basketball, they considered that team not only dance-worthy but one that could win games with where he got them to by year-end.

But your point is spot on. Look at what someone posted earlier about the inside-series they are doing on Vice. Frankly I've never heard of the channel, but my guess is it is available on certain cable packages and/or streaming networks. Do you think Pitino wants to do something like that? Hello no. But he realizes in this area you have to do that for exposure purposes. And it's working. They had 15,000 for Xavier on a worknight when its 5 degrees outside.

this is the dumbest post i think we've had in maybe 5 years.

Pitino wouldn't touch SHU with a 10 ft BECAUSE he couldn't compete with our budget. i think he might have even said as much.

he was only going to SJU because he knew he already had he money. he wouldn't be spawning money that doesn't exist here

I agree. So he would have contemplated coaching us 5/10/15/20/25 years ago though right?

we were never going to be on his radar because we are a small time school and he knows it. except one year.

had to go to iona after his disgrace tour in greece. probably would have taken the shu job in order to jump ship immediately .

I do think there is a lot of truth to this. We wouldn't have Repole, but I do agree that Quick Rick would be working other prospects. He is good at this part of the job, as well as the politicking; I don't think anyone can deny that.

But we'd also have to endure the shame of having him as our coach. (And I know this wasn't the point of your post, @Fishjam)

This season has been an embarrassment. A total embarrassment. But I've never felt shame over it.

That said, Shaheen Holloway can learn some things from Quick Rick. He might never be the natural schmoozer Quick Rick is, but in 2025, there is more to this job than just recruitment and coaching them up. It's changed, and he's going to have to change with it. And I say that as someone who remains unapologetically supportive of him as our coach.

Enduring the "shame of having him as our coach", lol.

Yea, this board was real ashamed when we emerged from half a decade's worth of irrelevance and won the Big East tourney with Whitehead, despite who was roaming the sidelines.

yup. and its a two way street. donors like repole can demand coaches or they won't donate

There is no shame in college sports anymore. No one would care about Pitino’s “past” if he was our coach and we were having the type of season St. John’s is.

SJU has been aggressively working the NIL space for years. Getting Pitino helped put it into a new gear

Mike Repole is a great supporter and lifelong fan from Middle Village Queens who was quoted more than a decade ago saying that his dream job was to coach SJU basketball.

Father Shanley’s best move was bringing him back into fold after Dirty Harrington and The Gemp alienated him. Repole loves sports, thinks big and couldn’t take the lack of attention given to the basketball program by the former presidents.

Also when you hire Pitino he brings a lot of his super wealthy Wall Street and Horse Racing buddies with him. They also have a lot of cash to throw around.

And SJU has had the NIL infrastructure in place for awhile. Former SJU AD Cragg, even though not working for the best presidents to be kind, was very pro active with building NIL collectives right from infancy. He saw the changing landscape of college sports before it even took place. Storm Marketing has been around for years and is thriving. And partnership with Kevin Durant’s company has been very key.

Durant and Kleiman (a Long Island boy) were sitting courtside last year at St. John’s/Holy Cross game at Carnesecca. Phoenix was in town for game against Knicks following night
You speak as if NIL has been around for a decade. I normally root for SJU when they're not playing SHU, but this is rubbish and SJU basketball was hot garbage for 20 years until this November.

Say what you want about Pitino but like him or not the man is a great coach. His statement about Seton Hall are true. The game is now all about money & if we want to compete we must come up with funding or be buried in the league's basement. Let me say this about our current tea: I have been following SHU hoops for over 50 years and this is the worst shooting team I have seen over that period of time. It's time for the administration to wake up and decide if we want to be competitive or not.

Tom K
Tom is so correct. I was a student during the very lean early to mid 80s, and have had season tix for 40 years.

The Pirates record was horrific then, but the Big East was stacked with premium talent.

The BE talent now, although solid, is not as strong within the BE, as players, are not as interested in gaining solid media exposure that was prevalent in the 80s, and instead focused on the immediate $ being spread throughout colleges and intl locations.

and another thing (in Queens-ese), Mike Anderson was a fantastic coach; no, not Boheim, and certainly a fish out of water in NYC, but to call him a "fool" and suggest that he was Mullin-esque is beyond stupid.

I get that you're a Pitino fanboi, but I mean this. It's just not that important to me that I'd have that guy be the face of our program.

There's no shame in the sport, but a university can still have some pride. At least until it hires someone like that.

I wouldn't take much satisfaction in winning if he were the face of the program. Seriously.

Oh so he would have never come here because our resources and pull have always been limited

SJU hired a guy who had sex with someone on the table at a restaurant. Xavier hired the biggest cheater around. Shame? Pride? lofl

Shame is not winning and pride is winning. Just like Jesus taught, Blessed be the NIL donors for theirs shall be the Kingdom of March Madness.

correct. he only wants the biggest. there is a big in between from lville to shu. but now its triple, 10x exposed, hence its comments.

i get it, you wanna say boohoo willard had it hard. pitino is willard's boy and never made comments like these. its a new ballgame now. and pitino is right. our resources are code red in this NIL era.

You completely missed the point. Simply pointing out that there is more we can do with NIL then to simply be resigned to the notion that we are "tapped out" at our current budget and our leaders have done the best they can with poor old Seton Hall's small and cheap alumni.

If someone did the things Pitino has done, our budget would be respectable.

Pitino was in with the big donor before he even took the job. its not like he figured out how to land the whale after taking the job. it was the whole deal to taking it

now, how much of the marketing and fan engagement does he do? idk. we do nothing. that much is true.

St. John’s wasn’t oozing with resources either. Or success. They last won a BET 25 years ago. The last won a BE RS 33 years ago. They’ve made 1 NCAAT in the last 10 years. But they recognized the NIL. Mike Cragg got things in motion. Seton Hall went against it.

Pitino saw the POTENTIAL there after Shanley was hired. And let’s face it he was still a bit radioactive too. He knew he could get Repole involved, he knew he could hijack the entire operation and install his own AD, force new facilities, and major upgrades in how that place operated and marketed itself. There was nobody strong enough there to stop him and nobody had any success to stay otherwise.

I'm no "fan boy". But I acknowledge water is wet. Whether someone is part of Seton Hall or not.

So you had a problem when we had a two-bit hustler, dealer, bottom-of-the barrel type that represents the worse elements of youth basketball being an assistant "coach" in name only?

Fanta said something similar. Said this embarrassment of a season has finally woken some people up. We'll see.
I hope it has, but anyone who was part of the administration when it was asleep at the wheel in 2021 & 2022 should not be trusted to fix this mess.

He was in every paper telling KW to NOT take our job thought it was bad for his career….
