Fans-

I am sure some Seton Hall Basketball Players will be kneeling during the National Anthem this year. Lets say they show unity and all the players and coaches kneel......even Coach Willard.

In this scenario what would be your reactions?

Would you still be a fan?

Would you still watch or attend games?

Would you still wear Seton Hall gear?

Would you wine and moan on a chat board?

Would you call the University in protest?

Would you stop donating to Pirate Blue?

Love to hear your candid feedback......

Would you still wear Seton Hall gear? Yes, the university is MUCH more than a basketball team.

Would you wine and moan on a chat board? Yes, why would you word it as whining and moaning? Couldn't one say that about kneeling during the National Anthem as well?

Would you call the University in protest? Yes

Would you stop donating to Pirate Blue? No, Pirate Blue is MUCH more than the basketball team.

So now that I've answered the above ridiculous what-if questions, I'd be proud if they showed support in a different fashion like kneeling after the anthem instead of the halfcourt handshake.

I would not like it but of course would still support the team and the University.
Ari Fleisher of the George W Bush administration has a terrific idea:
Why don’t the players kneel in memory of George Floyd for a minute of silence- fans hushed- and then everyone stand for the anthem.
To me, this adds respect to the life that was wrongly taken, takes the damn politics out of it ,and brings us together as Americans and in our case, Pirate fans.
Go Pirates

I think it would be a slap in the face to many of the fans that support these kids. I'm also resigned that it will happen in our current climate.

I will stand proudly with my hand on my heart. Anyone else who chooses can do what they want. I won't judge a bunch of young kids and assume they understand me and my reasons for standing and saluting the flag or assume I understand their reasons. I also don't have to kneel to support them. I come to the games and support them financially every year with my donations.

I think many factors come into play, is it a one time political statement or ongoing? Think many people would be okay with a one time statement by the players vs something moving forward indefinitely.

I would still support the team, Pirate Blue and obviously the school (school much bigger than sports), but I would not be happy if they knelt, because of what the National Anthem & our flag stands for (more than song/piece of cloth/political statement).

As it was slightly before my time and also the internet, what was the SHU fans at time view of what Marko Lokar did in 1991? I know he took a lot of heat in the press, but what about students, alumni and fans?

How about we just leave politics out of sports!? If anyone wants to protest that’s perfectly fine but, in this case, I am paying to watch you play basketball not protest!

Not on your life I will be accepting someone kneeling during the National Anthem that I worked and fought to honor. Wrong format for this but I do not care !!

They ran a non us citizen who was pacifist out of the country but hey he will always have the pitt game

If they do then that will be the end of my support of this program. I'll take my PB donation and put it to better use by increasing my donations to Wounded Warriors and Disabled American Veterans. I know they would truly appreciate a few extra thousand dollars. So sad. Would it hurt them to respect the anthem? Does our administration have any balls? I guess they won't be honoring the wounded warriors and first responder of the game anymore either.

This is just theoretical from a poster who just wanted to stir the pot though.

I know he took a lot of heat from opposing fans, believe was particularly bad at MSG and he received death threat phone calls/letters, but I guess my question is were SHU fans & students hostile to him as well.

Kneeling is a disgrace. The US is the least racist country in the world; 45mm people are seeking legal citizenship yet virtually no one is leaving. Black median income is higher in the US than Canada, UK and France or anywhere else. I will be extremely upset if a player kneels.

Remember too he was a slovenian-italian

I can certainly see them doing it though. Years ago, I quickly picked up on how Carrington was the only guy who did not place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. The school knew because Carrington stood between the two DOBOs in order to signal to the arena camera man not to go any further has he proceeded down the line of players. I bit my toungue on that one. The school thinks some of us were stupid I guess.

Again you are one of these types that have a macro view that blacks/african-americans have been handled and treated "good enough" by now

I noticed that as well. I don’t think Carrington is a US citizen. He stood respectfully but never put his hand over his heart during the anthem.

Where the hell did he ever say that blacks/african-americans have been handled and treated "good enough"? Don’t put words in TrueBlue’s mouth and try to twist what he said!

This should have been a poll not a normal thread. Prob should have been off the ship too.

My two cents, I believe the majority of fans wouldn’t change their feeling towards the team that much and support them the same.

Would the majority current fans actually like them kneeling at the anthem every game? Not sure but I lean to no. I think most people go to sports to get away from politics.

Maybe there is a more creative way the players can protest/honor causes they believe in as well as the people that have been victims of police brutality without making it “SEEM” like they are trying to be disrespectful to the symbol that honors what our US Veterans and others that sacrificed for, those that fought for freedom, and of course every US citizens right to protest even thought that isn’t their intention.

On the other side of the debate, civil disobedience is preferred over riots and violence by marginalized communities any day and without ruffling some feathers sometimes, change doesn't get done or done soon enough. Just wish the movement didn’t seem like it was protesting the very things that gave them the right to protest against the government, more people would be on the bandwagon.

I'm against kneeling because I feel there are more productive ways to get your message across. Kapernick knelt to protest police brutality and its only gotten worse since then...clearly his messaging has had no effect...it only further divided the country....that being said, if SHU players want to do it, fine. Its a free country.

Most on here won't be watching north american team sports going forward anyways, they can't assimilate the stances ethnically diverse athletes will be showing

LMAO...anyone and their money wont be missed, we will all be gone and our money will be gone too one day and the world will move on too
You can't be that clueless. Enrollment likely going down. People able to negotiate tuition price. People are in bad economic shape. There are a lot of things going on negatively from a financial perspective. And you're okay with just saying goodbye to conservative fans, at a Catholic institution. That's just brilliant. I can tell you've given much though to the potential loss of donation from the non basketball fan who donates to the school and stops giving if they disagree.

I'm sure that anyone that is against kneeling walks around the arena scolding all the fans that don't pay attention to the anthem. Look around. People are talking, drinking, moving around, kissing their gf/bf. It ludicrous.

You want to solve this? Stop playing the anthem outside of National team games. You're at a form of entertainment. You don't get this at movies, concerts, etc. You don't get this before TV shows. Its fake patriotism. Move on.

He is that clueless. He's not thinking of all the future fans in 15-20 years that will never exist because their parents never brought them to games. The guy is certainly not in business/athletic development.

Just a hunch, none of the people against kneeling are walking around the arena during the anthem. I could be wrong but that's my hunch. I do hear the people at the bars during the anthem and think its wrong. Generally people at their seats aren't talking, other than some guy yelling hats off to the guy who forgot he was wearing a hat. 100% of the time that person being called out takes their hats off. Never once have I seen a problem.

Frankly, I wish this 'poll' hadn't been created because all it does is set the stage for more divisiveness. But it was posted so I will answer anyway.

If any of our kids kneel I would be incredibly proud of them for taking a stand against the kind of brutality that is being fought by the BLM movement.

It's my firm belief that criticizing kneelers and opposing their beliefs are thoroughly un-American actions. I would also add that the comment someone made to the effect that 'America is the least racist country in the world' is absurd. I deeply love this country despite its flaws. But denying the presence of racism in this country --both historically and today --is completely delusional.

Least racist doesn't imply there is no racism. There are 7 billion people in the world, there is racism in all parts of the world. If the USA was so racist peoole would not clamor to live here. I don't see anyone clamoring to move to Somalia or Latin America. USA is the greatest country in the world.

Here's my problem with it. Nobody is for brutality of any kind, police brutality, regular civilians, gangs, sexual abuse, etc they're all bad. At the same time I'm not going to protest against priests WHILE mass is going on. There are others worshiping and I'm going to respect them. Police brutality is bad, but I'm not going to protest it WHILE the guy next to me remembers his brother or uncle he lost fighting for this country. Just my 2 cents. I don't think having a few minutes of respect for the others around me whether they be at church or during the anthem is un-American.

You explained your view. (Although the church analogy is not valid; a basketball game is not an act of worship.) I simply don't see it the same way (and I have had family members killed and maimed in war.) Kneeling in protest of police brutality has nothing to do with soldiers and wars. It is using our unique American principle of freedom to bring attention to the problem of repeated incidents of racism and brutality by a segment of police officers. You and I will never agree on this and while that's unfortunate, it's something we can live with.
