In a thrilling affair that featured 12 lead changes, the Pirates trailed by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter before mounting a late charge. Sidney Cooks and Lauren Park-Lane had double-doubles, but Villanova rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Pirates, 76-73, on New Year's Eve. The Pirates held a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Villanova out-scored The Hall, 26-16, in the final 10 minutes.

Park-Lane was brilliant, going for a career-best 33 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting, which included 4-for-6 from three-point range and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. She scored 15 of the Pirates' 22 fourth quarter points. Park-Lane also pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Villanova has won 14 of their last 15 games with their lone loss coming to Seton Hall during that stretch. The Wildcats are coming off a convincing 76-52 victory over St. John's in the BIG EAST quarterfinals.

Watching second half on fs1. Team making a nice run. Making it interesting. Not sure they pull it out but great effort in second half. Down 6. 7 minutes left.

They struggle covering the perimeter and too top heavy from a point production standpoint. They play extremely hard. Too bad they had a poor start to the season. Great effort at the BigEast Tournament.

Park-Lane scores a team-high 24 points, while Cooks netted 19 against Villanova on Sunday.

UNCASVILLE, CONN. – Junior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) scored a team-high 24 points and Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) added 19 more, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team was outlasted by Villanova, 64-55, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday.

The Pirates fell behind early due to a lengthy Villanova run to close the first quarter and had to play from behind for the remainder of the game. The Hall, playing in their fifth game in seven days, ran out of steam late as Villanova held on for the nine-point victory.

Park-Lane scored 24 points on 7-for-14 shooting to go with three rebounds and three assists. Cooks had 19 points and seven rebounds.

The Story:
A three-pointer by Park-Lane gave The Hall an early 8-7 lead, but Villanova held the Pirates to just two made field goals for the rest of the quarter. The Wildcats closed out the first quarter with a 16-4 run and took a 23-12 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams ratcheted up their defense with each shooting just 25.0% from the field. Cooks was the lone highlight offensively as she outscored Villanova, 8-to-7, by herself. The Hall methodically cut into the Wildcat lead, but still trailed, 30-21, at the half.

Villanova opened the second half with an 11-4 run, extending their lead to 41-25 with 6:45 left to play. The Pirates bounced back with the next seven points, five of which came from Park-Lane, to cut their deficit to 41-32. Both the Wildcats and Pirates shot 50.0% from the field in the third, and Villanova carried a 48-38 lead into the fourth.

Down 51-38, the relentless Pirates made a final burst. The Hall held Villanova without a field goal for 5:20 and during the defensive stand, closed to within just four points, 55-51, with 3:51 left to play. With 2:09 left to play, Villanova's Lior Garzon scored on a layup to extend their lead to six, then, with only a minute left, Garzon struck again with a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 60-51 lead.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Seton Hall was 20-for-56 (35.7%) from the floor for the game, while Villanova was 23-for-52 (44.2%). The Hall was 3-for-18 (16.7%) from three-point range, while the Wildcats were 9-for-25 (36.0%).

Although Seton Hall has been eliminated from the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament, its season is far from over. The Pirates are expected to participate in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT.

Are we down an assistant coach? I have not heard/read any mention of a departure.

Did anyone see Bozella's post game conference? He was very frustrated about the lack of respect his team received nationally. I do like his intensity. If his team was healthy the entire season might have had a different outcome.

TONY!! LOL. take a breath!

i dont hate it. never hate a coach with fire.

Mixed bag for me on that. I see a very frustrated coach fighting tooth and nail for his team. His program for a multitude of reasons is stuck in place. It's still a very respectable program. I agree with him about the NET. I have not been able to watch the team too much this season. In that particular game his gals were getting bumped around. Ridiculous that Villanova had zero fouls in the 1st quarter, and I believe finished with two in the half. I mean come on no way. The bottom line is that they need to have less slipups during the season. Not just this season. They deserve a ton of credit for finishing the season so strong.

Yeah but don’t look at the NET, don’t look at wins and losses, just look at our entitled selves.
to be fair didnt willard put together a good record the last month to claim 6th place and many here are claimed its his best year?

Nothing at all similar… the Big East women’s league isn’t any good, and the bragging on the women’s team side comes from within the staff, not from a group of guys on a message board. Plus, did you watch the video of his rant? You would hope he was called in for a little chat upon returning home today.

Holy crap. I don't follow the women's team and don't know anything about the coach I haven't read here. But that is a "youtube clip" press conference.

But he’s not running around stupidly running his mouth, dropping F-bombs at a Big East press conference.
no, his stupid comments are more timid. more on brand.

this is the most intense thing ive seen from womens basketball

Wow. Coach, you need to breathe dude. Maybe don’t lose to UCF and Fordham at home and a bad SJU team on the road and the NET won’t be so bad.

This teams resume reminds me of the RU men’s team. Good wins but some downright awful OOC losses that drag down the NET. The difference is that unlike RU in the B1G, the bottom half of the Big East is awful more like the WCC and not nearly enough to balance out those bad losses.

I still hold firm in the old school belief that a major conference team MUST reach 20 wins minimum to remove many questions about record. This team had 19 and the aforementioned terrible losses. I know they were shorthanded with Covid and injuries for the first half of the season but there’s only so much that can be excused.

There’s talent there but they didn’t beat the big guns often enough. They should have beaten Nova on the road too but came up short and coughed up a lead late. There was a few games like that this year. Go win the WNIT now and carry the momentum to next year.

Side note, Lauren’s face while coach is sitting next to her ranting…she looks like she is so embarrassed and wants to be anywhere else. I like the passion and I’m certainly not innocent in that area myself, but that’s an instant meme if anybody outside this group actually watched these press conferences.

That's not what I saw, I saw an absolutely fantastic player who was upset by the loss.
