QUESTION; We all know that Hillary will be the Dem candidate come the next election but who will be the GOP candidate is not clear at all with at least a dozen candidates vying for the nomination. So my question is in your opinion which of the GOP candidates would make the best President and which would be the worst. Now I am not asking who would be the most electable but rather who would make the BEST (or worst) President for America.

Tom K

While not yet an official candidate, I'd say John Kasich would be the best president of the GOP field. Ted Cruz would be the worst.

I'd like to actually hear their positions and solutions first. FWIW, I'm not convinced Hillary will win the Dem nomination.

Don't count Bernie out yet. He will beat Hillary straight up in a debate, and would do the same with any of the Republicans. Can he win the nomination? Probably not. I'm not a Hillary fan but don't see anyone beating her. So it really doesn't matter who the Republicans run. I would vote for her if for no other reason than the two Reagan appointees to the Supreme Court are now 80 and will likely not be around much longer.

To me It does matter who the Republicans run. I know many people who are so tied to their political party that they always want the opposing party to run their weakest candidate. I guess if you are a politician that makes sense. But I'm not a politician and just want both party's to run the candidate that would do the best job in office. Then America wins regardless of the final outcome. While I am more liberal than conservative I do not think political philosophy is as important as competence, leadership and executive ability.

i really hope my man Bernie finds a way to convince the masses to not go with more of the same from a warmongering member of the establishment like Hillary. He's creeping up on her #'s-wise in New Hampshire. Seems like an impossible feat but so did Obama's run.

Kasich seems to be the only reasonable Republican running, and as such, is at the bottom of the heap. Just like the former governor of Utah who ran last time. Sad times, but not surprising.

TRUMP 2016 DUDE!!!

Im with Tom. Give me two good candidates that have a vision, can inspire, unite and lead the country. Too much to ask, but we can hope.

I am a life long Dem. However there is no way I can vote for Hillary! I hope the Republicans will run a moderate, non-hawk.

One thing's for sure: It can't be Mike Huckabee. Politicians say a lot of dumb things, but the latest comments by this moron take the cake. God has already "solved" racism? Is he kidding? Newsflash to Mr. Huckabee and anyone inclined to agree with his dimwitted point of view: Racism has been a disease in America ever since white people brought it here. It is 100 percent a white problem and isn't close to being solved. Now that the flag is being removed from in front of South Carolina's statehouse, it is time for White America to take ownership of its racism problem and vow to fix it. Remove white racism and the problem of racism in America will disappear. In the meantime, Mr. Huckabee needs to seek some type of counseling because he's surely not qualified to run for president. No wonder people are leaving the church in droves. Guys like this are pushing them away with their idiotic statements about God and Jesus.

As for Democrat versus Republican, the two parties have never been further apart. Since the majority of Americans have grown weary of the bigotry, hatred, and narrow-mindedness that the Republican Party has come to stand for, whoever the Democratic candidate is will win handily.

unfortunately Kasich punted when asked about what to do with the confederate flag over the weekend, so to hell with him too. just another right winger who was too afraid to stand up the racist element of his own party, as he knows he would need them to have any chance in the primaries. Pathetic.

None of them. All but Jeb are far right, but he still leans right. Too right.
I too am really concerned about could happen to the Supreme Court.

JIM, you come off dumber than Huckabee if that's possible. If the country has grown so weary of the Republican "bigotry", how did gain a majority in the House & Senate in the last election? Exactly what is "White America"?? Who's the bigot?

Yeah, Huckabee is a lot smarter than Jim. People are leaving the "church" in droves? I guess he's talking about the Catholic Church, but I'm pretty sure Huckabee is an evangelical, and they are growing by leaps and bounds. And he'll vote for a reptile like Hillary so that he gets an overly activist court all seeing things in the warped way he does.

Amen to that Muggsy. That is why I may hold my nose and cross my fingers but vote for Clinton.

No need to vote for Hillary if you lean left and live in NJ. She will easily win this state regardless. Vote for a candidate that you can support, not just Hillary b/c she isn't the Republican candidate. Maybe whoever the Green Party throws out there will garner your interest. I wouldn't be surprised if their candidate is even Bernie Sanders if he doesn't get the Dem nomination.

So far not a single person has answered my question. Does this mean that none of the GOP candidates qualifies as a good candidate? I do find that hard to believe.

you asked for who is the best and worst; not who is qualified. Shouldn't we wait to see what their positions are or how they plan to lead the country? Plus most of the posts have been from blind dem loyalists who seem to have no interest or care in anything beyond Hillary. If you look at resume alone just about all of the candidates (both Dem and Rep) are significantly more qualified than our sitting President was when he was elected.

I guess you didn't read my response to this thread from the other day.

If it's Clinton vs. Bush, I'll vote third party or not at all. No more Clinton's. No more Bush's.

I like Rand Paul and John Kasich & Scott Walker have both shown great leadership.

Keep away from the whackos like Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren.

Too bad Jim Webb isn't in the field for the dems.

Sorry 09. Actually I did see your post & it was the only one with an answer but you did not indicate why you prefer John Kasich. I guess I should have put that into the question. Who would make the best President AND WHY .

I meant "best" not "qualified". Though hopefully the best candidate is also qualified. I do realize we can have a better understanding on who would be the best President after the campaign stars rolling and debates have taken place but I'm sure most of us have some idea at this point who they think would make the best (or at least a good) President. Also I might note the best debater does not necessarily make the best President.

Well I do agree with you on your list of those who would not make good Presidents and I did like Jim Webb as a Senator. I really do not know enough about John Kasich to form an opinion.

Tom K

I'm not talking about debater...does anyone really know where every candidate stands on the key issues and what their solutions are?

I am surprised SPK included Trump on the whacko list. At least he tells you what's on his mind and doesn't sugarcoat like a typical politician.

I probably agree with many of his positions but Trump as president, LOL????

Humor me: why are Warren & Sanders wackos?

Rand Paul lost me when he did that ridiculous photo op on the aircraft carrier, and walked back all his tough talk about cutting defense spending. The big money donors got to hm like everyone else. Sad, just another establishment guy now. We NEED to get public financing of elections going. It's the only way to make the system healthier at all levels.

Bernie "We Have Too Many Brands of Deodorant" Sanders and Elizabeth "No Really, I'm An Indian" Warren, LOL???

On the definite "no" list:
* Ted Cruz-Polarizing
* Hillary Clinton-Polarizing
* Donald Trump-He's only doing this to get better Apprentice ratings
* Rick Perry-Polarizing

Trump is a publicity hound. He says outragous things whether he believes them or not just to get headlines. His references to Mexicans in his candidacy announcement speech was flat out offensive ("I'm sure there MIGHT be some good Mexicans") . Sounds like something he took from Joseph Gobbles 1933 Nazi playbook (as opposed to the 1935 playbook). Now I do not think Trump is a racist but he does sound that way sometimes just to get the headline. Yeah here I agree with SPK that he qualifies as a "whacko".

.

I do not think Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders are wackos, but I do not think either would make a good President. Much for the same reason that Ted Cruz would not make a good President. All are good legislators but they are too set in their uncompromising views. I think America is best off when ruled from the center or close to it. A President has to be able to deal with the opposing party, know how to make a deal and understand the difference between what they want and what they need. Progress is not made by gridlock which is what we have now with our current President and current Congress. A President has to be practical which is why I do not feel that idealogues make good Presidents. I'm sure both those here on the left and right will disagree with me but the two most successfull of our recent Presidents were Reagan & Clinton because they knew how to deal.

Tom K

See, that's why I am nominating Snake Tom for President. I can hardly wait for the debates when Trump says something wacky and Tom whips out his trusty air horn.

Thank you for remembering that old trusty horn. It took us to the Final Four (uh make that Final Two) before disintegrating.

The Donald continues to make a fool of himself. First he acts shocked that a Spanish station Univision would boycott his shows after his anti Mexican tirade and now he is banning any Univision employee from playing golf on one of his courses. Yup that sounds like a really oppresive sanction to me - lol.
