Roseanne....

She lost me after the National Anthem debacle...shameful.

Don't care for Olbermann, wouldn't care if he were fired.. but they are not similar situations.
Rosanne wasn't fired because she said a curse word. She was fired for saying something racist.

Actually she said something about a religion, which is a set of beliefs by a person. Olbermann says a lot of stuff against conservatives, which is a set of beliefs by a person. Neither are correct. Sadly most people can tolerate the one that leans in their direction. I don't see Van Jones getting fired for saying whitelash

No.

Rosanne herself apologized for commenting on her "politics and her looks"
She was saying she looked like an Ape - That is racist and why she was fired.

Olberman's rants always call someone a Nazi which is anti-semitic, same as racist.

Olberman's rants always call someone a Nazi which is anti-semitic, same as racist.

Calling someone a Nazi is anti-semetic? Like if I call people who hate Jewish people a Nazi that makes me anti-semetic? Not really following the logic there.

In any case...
Calling someone a "Nazi" is basically slang for racist authoritarian. Not saying people should use the term... but that is what it is.

Saying a black person looks like their parent was an ape is actually racist.

Both shamefully equivalent. And yet one gets canned (rightfully so) and the other just got rehired. BY THE SAME COMPANY!!!!

Abhorrent behavior has no bounds whether it be age, race, political ideology, etc. Some people can recognize and call it out wherever it occurs, and others will look the other way or make excuses for those that are on their "team". Pretty clear how that lines up in this thread....

If you look at the definition of racism, what she did really isn't racism, it's just plain deplorable.

Calling someone a Nazi says they are a hater of Jews and believe they are an inferior species.

You don't think saying a black person looks like an ape is racist?
Seriously?

Calling someone a Nazi says they are a hater of Jews

Sure.

and believe they are an inferior species.

...No.

Calling someone a Nazi does not mean I believe that Nazi is an inferior species.
Calling someone a Nazi is not racist.

This thread wasn't about abhorrent behavior. It was about racist behavior which our society is MUCH less likely to tolerate than talking negatively about someones age or politics.

I don't care about Olbermann and wouldn't care if he were fired. I personally do not think saying a curse word is comparable to saying something racist. If you do, would you say calling someone an arrogant a-hole because of their political beliefs is just as bad as something Rosanne said?

No offense, but you may want to think coming across as a less arrogant a-hole and stop parrotting your partisan talking points. .

Calling someone a Nazi does not mean I believe that Nazi is an inferior species.
Calling someone a Nazi is not racist.

Last time I checked Nazi's were racist. Wasn't one of the items of their list the Aryan Race? So wouldn't calling someone a Nazi be calling someone a racist?

Maybe you have me there but my public school education told me we are all descendants of apes. You're not an intelligent design kind of guy are you?

Nazis believed the Jews were an inferior people. Calling someone a Nazi means you think they think Jews are inferior. If I call you a Seton Hall fan, it's because I believe you root for Seton Hall.

Gotta go with Merge on this one. However, nobody needs a lecture from Valerie either. She should go back to being useless as she has done the last 10 years.

Good effort - but no need to spin the discussion further. What she said was racist.

Indeed.

If I call someone a Nazi - I am saying they are racist. If I call you a Clemson fan, that means you are a Clemson man.

Me saying those things does not make me a racist of a Clemson fan.

Yes, exactly.
Where are our signals getting mixed here?

It is not racist to call someone a racist.

This thread wasn't about abhorrent behavior. QUOTE]
From my perspective it was.... if you’re so concerned about racism, what is your feeling about white-lash?

I guess "feckless c*nt" isn't enough to get you fired.

Amazing.

Well isn't "feckless c*nt" better than comparing a black women to an ape? Both are obscene, but one ventures into racial territory.

My stance is that all of these firings and outrages over obscenities leads to slippery slope of policing thought. I'm against bubble wrapping the world from language.

Outrage is also turning into an "arm's race." Team 1 says something crude or racist and Team 2 gets outraged. Then someone from Team 2 says something crude or racist so Team 1 has to match or exceed the previous outrage displayed by Team 2. It's almost as if Team 1 and Team 2 are comprised of the same imperfect human beings.

Absolutely.

I don't really buy any of the outrage... that is all entirely fake, but there are lines that if crossed, could get you fired. Especially when you are talking about being the face of a Disney TV program hitting millions of homes.
Racism is one of those things.

Bottom line is all of these people we are talking about are scum but the media is heavily biased towards their liberal orthodoxy.

So you're saying that racially disgusting trumps obscene disgusting. No pun intended.

In regard to Olberman, I think it is unprofessional of a broadcaster working for a company to use that type of language. If I was in charge of ESPN, I would fire him because I would not want that type of language and behavior associated with one of my employees.

However, I do disagree that they are immorally equivalent. Olberman is expressing his political views in an uncouth, uneducated and profanity laced manner. Rosanne is saying blatently racist things. Btw, she is now saying woe is me. It was just a dumb joke. I am a person who believes comics can get away with almost anything they say with the caveat that it is funny and it is clear it is a joke. Rosanne was not doing a standup routine. She was tweeting her political conspiratorial views which were not funny.

Both are wrong and deserve to be fired but not equivalent.

Samantha Bae is completely different. She is doing a political satire routine and during it used the C word to describe Ivanka. She has nothing to apologize for. She is doing a comedy routine and should not be part of this. According to Hall 85; Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinnison and most other great comics are the equivalent to what Rosanne did. That’s ridiculous.

You’re entitled to your opinion. The difference between those comedians and what Bee did was using the word to attack someone specifically. I’m not going to split hairs when we are talking about disgusting behavior. Quite frankly, I say let the market decide. Barr lost her job… Good. Sponsors are pulling out of Bee’s program… Good. Actions have consequences.

They’re all offensive and should all be treated as such.

So all offensive language is the same? I guess you are part of the political correctness movement. Never thought that would be your stance. However, All is not the same and these attempts at false equivalencies is part of this fallacy.

George Carlin, Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinnison, Dice Clay, Chris Rock and the list goes on and on. They all offended people and used vulgar language. You know what, they were funny and that is their job. Context in which a statement was made is extremely important.

Btw, Sally Field's tweet was actually pretty funny and empowering of women. I mean are you guys that humorless and so obtuse that you don't recognize context?

There are matter of degrees in every part of life. For example, Littering is illegal. So is murder. According to you guys, both are equivalent because they are illegal. I don't know about you, But I see a wide gap between the transgressions and they are not equivalent by no means.

Stop reaching and putting words in my mouth with these goofy extreme analogies . You have an opinion, but that doesn’t make you right.

Perhaps you missed my point. The extreme example was to allow you to see that there are matters of degrees. Calling someone an ape is not the same as calling someone an ass H***. Calling a black person an ape is as offensive and racist like calling that person the N Word.

Seeing differences is not your strong suit. In this thread you essentially said that Sally Field, Samantha Bea, Olberman and Rosaane are all equivalent. Although it is your opinion, sometimes your opinion smacks against the truth. In this instance, it does.

While they may be different, the gap between referring to Jarret as an ape and Invanka as c*nt is worth debating

Racism is not OK but sexism is OK as long as it is a liberal attacking conservative??

Citing a gap seems a bit racist to me. Is there a weighting factor for any insult to a African American. What is the table of weights?

Ape gets a 2X
Kike gets a 1.8X
Wop gets 1.2X
Calling a White women a c*nt gets a 0.9X
Calling a black woman a c*nt gets a 3.2X

Littering and murder. Brilliant. I am glad you pointed that out. Yeah, I thought they were the same.

Pete, you are pissing into the wind. That and "false equivalence" is all the guy knows.

Then again, you can learn much from him. As he pointed out so eloquently, we all thought that littering and murder were equal offenses. Who knew?
