This is a down year for the conference. While there really aren't any "bad" teams except for Depaul and St. John's, we only have 3 teams in the top 40 RPI. Last year we had 6, and deservedly got 6 in the dance. That ain't happening this season. I don't think Rothstein's comment about the league being down is wrong, nor do I think he is incorrect in saying that conferences like the Big 12, ACC, Big 10 etc are on a different level this year.
Nova is a solid squad, but does anyone who has watched a lot of college ball think they are one of the top 5-7 teams in the country? I don't. The tourney is a lot about matchups - look at Xavier's run last year - and they were probably the worst of the 6 teams that danced. But absent some really favorable matchups, I don't expect the conference to make much noise.
He was calling into question the conference's relevance or strength since its inception, clearly stating that last year's performance in the NCAA was awful and the conference needs to prove something this year. I agree with him that the Big East needs to do better in the NCAA tournament. However, our record against other conferences during the regular season should not be dismissed. He had no problem with the SEC as one of "the Power 5" in basketball. The SEC isn't such a strong conference. Kentucky is their claim to fame. After that, there isn't much. The Big East is clearly a better conference than the SEC.
Excellent point. Once Seton Hall makes the tournament, I will be rooting for every Big East team to go as far as possible, just so long as we win any head to head battles! The conference needs a good run by some teams in the tournament. It's important for reasons such as this. Unfortunately that's not happened in recent years and for all the dominance by Villanova in particular, they have spit the bit in the tournament.
The new Big East has landed 10 teams into the Tournament in its first two years. They are 7-10 and only one reaching has far as the Sweet Sixteen.
That futility was the context for much of what Rothstein was saying.
