OMAHA, NEB. – Sophomore
Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) allowed only one run over six brilliant innings, but St. John's rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the Seton Hall baseball team, 3-2, on Friday.
The loss ends the season for the Pirates with a final record of 29-24.
After the Pirate offense struggled against Creighton on Thursday, The Hall came out slugging right away on Friday, scoring two runs in the opening inning. With one out, senior
Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) doubled down the left field line. Freshman
Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to give The Hall a 1-0 lead. With two outs, back-to-back singles by
Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) and
Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) plated the Pirates' second run.
St. John's got a run back in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Gui Gingras.
From there, it was a pitchers' duel from innings two through seven with both starters pitching in and out of trouble.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall reliever
Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) allowed a leadoff triple to deep center field in the bottom of the eighth. St. John's Josh Shaw followed with a double to tie the game. A sacrifice bunt, followed by a sacrifice fly drove in what proved to be the winning run.
