SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) collected her second straight double-double, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to Portland, 61-55, in the second round of the WBIT on Sunday.

Seton Hall led for almost 32 minutes of the contest, and had an eight-point advantage with 5:02 left in the game, but the Pilots closed the contest with a 15-1 run to stun the historic Walsh Gymnasium crowd.

Eads finished with a game-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds and two steals. Yaya Lops (Samford, Conn.) tallied 13 points, including eight in the first quarter. Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) was a third Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Seton Hall's memorable season ends with a 23-10 final record.

THE STORY:
Seton Hall's offense started hot and hit six of its first eight shots, including a pair of three-pointers by Lops to give the Pirates an early 14-7 lead with 6:49 left in the opening quarter. Despite The Hall shooting 53 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes, Portland was able to close to within 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.

While both teams cooled their shooting a bit in the second, it remained close throughout. The Pirates out-rebounded, out-shot and forced more turnovers than Portland in the first half, but led by only five points, 30-25, at the break.

Eads hit a pair of free-throws to extend The Hall's lead to 32-25 out of the break, but then the Pirates went scoreless for the next 4:16, which allowed Portland to tie the game with a 7-0 run. With the score tied at 34, The Hall went on a 7-2 burst, with five points and two steals from Catalon, to extend its lead to 41-36 with 1:56 left in the third.

A three-pointer by Kaydan Lawson (Cleveland, Ohio) gave Seton Hall its largest lead of the game, 48-40, with 8:33 left in the game. A free-throw by Lops put The Hall back up by eight, 54-46, with 5:02 left, but Portland closed the game with a 15-1 run to steal the contest from the Pirates. The Hall was 0-for-7 from the field in the final five minutes as it seemingly ran out of gas. Both Catalon and Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) fouled out down the stretch.

THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the floor for the game, while Portland was 21-for-50 (42.0%). The Hall was 6-for-25 (24.0%) from three-point range, while the Pilots were 6-for-23 (26.1%).

Up 8 with 5 minutes to go . Horrible coaching job down the stretch trying to milk the lead. Also tired of hearing him complaining about missing the NCAAs. Win a big game 1st . Very good season but not a NCCCA worthy team at all .
Did not see this one, but I hear they just collapsed in those last several minutes. For the most part they showed improvement as a Program this season. However, same issues as in the past which are scoring droughts, inability to defend the three at crunch time and players unfortunately sidelined with injuries. Also, Faith this year somewhat like Lauren in the past are worn out by the end of the season and the efficiency goes way down. Its going to be hard for Tony's teams to reach the NCAA's because of SHU's resources and the difficult task of putting 5 legit quality starters out on the floor. They have to find a way to become a 40-60 program instead of a 60-80 program. Walsh is an excellent place to play, but they need more talent moving forward.

Would have felt better if it were the second round of the WNIT.

Tell me you didn't watch the game without telling me you didn't watch the game.

Lops went 1 of 2 from line to push lead to 8 with 5:02 left. 8 sec later, Portland hit a 3 to cut to 5. Lazy pass turns into a TO and Eads fouls the layup attempt.FT turns it into another 3 pt play, lead cut to 2. All in a about 40 seconds.

There was no attempt to milk the lead. Prior to this, lead was jumping around from 4 - 7 and looked in hand. 6 pt run turned the tide.

Team's weakness all season was offensive execution. Too many late shot clock attempts hitting front iron. Faith having a stinker and fouling out didn't help. Savanah having a bad shooting night didn't help.

Horrible take. If I was a betting man, and I am, I’d bet a lot on silk being there, like he is for just about all of their games.
I was there .

You just said TOO MANY LATE shot attempts hitting the iron . That is milking the clock . Our one big advantage was speed and pushing the ball down court which we did not do in the end of the game .

The team has had issues with ineffective offense (men did too at many occasions). If you think Tony's milking the clock with a 2 point lead, I don't know what to tell you.
