SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman
Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) collected her second straight double-double, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to Portland, 61-55, in the second round of the WBIT on Sunday.
Seton Hall led for almost 32 minutes of the contest, and had an eight-point advantage with 5:02 left in the game, but the Pilots closed the contest with a 15-1 run to stun the historic Walsh Gymnasium crowd.
Eads finished with a game-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds and two steals.
Yaya Lops (Samford, Conn.) tallied 13 points, including eight in the first quarter.
Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) was a third Pirate to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Seton Hall's memorable season ends with a 23-10 final record.
THE STORY:
Seton Hall's offense started hot and hit six of its first eight shots, including a pair of three-pointers by Lops to give the Pirates an early 14-7 lead with 6:49 left in the opening quarter. Despite The Hall shooting 53 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes, Portland was able to close to within 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.
While both teams cooled their shooting a bit in the second, it remained close throughout. The Pirates out-rebounded, out-shot and forced more turnovers than Portland in the first half, but led by only five points, 30-25, at the break.
Eads hit a pair of free-throws to extend The Hall's lead to 32-25 out of the break, but then the Pirates went scoreless for the next 4:16, which allowed Portland to tie the game with a 7-0 run. With the score tied at 34, The Hall went on a 7-2 burst, with five points and two steals from Catalon, to extend its lead to 41-36 with 1:56 left in the third.
A three-pointer by
Kaydan Lawson (Cleveland, Ohio) gave Seton Hall its largest lead of the game, 48-40, with 8:33 left in the game. A free-throw by Lops put The Hall back up by eight, 54-46, with 5:02 left, but Portland closed the game with a 15-1 run to steal the contest from the Pirates. The Hall was 0-for-7 from the field in the final five minutes as it seemingly ran out of gas. Both Catalon and
Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) fouled out down the stretch.
