QUEENS, N.Y. (June 6, 2017) – St. John’s bolstered its front line on Tuesday with the signing of 6-foot-9, 240-pound power forward Sedee Keita. The Philadelphia native transfers to St. John’s from South Carolina and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Per NCAA transfer regulations, Keita must complete one full academic year of residency before competing for the Red Storm.

“We are excited to welcome Sedee to our basketball family,” said St. John’s head coach Chris Mullin. “Sedee is a very athletic big man with a wide frame who comes with high major experience.”

A consensus four-star, top-100 recruit in the Class of 2016, Keita played in 29 games as a freshman last season during South Carolina’s run to the Final Four. He logged 9.6 minutes per game while averaging 1.1 points and 2.0 rebounds. Keita finished the season fourth on the team with 11 blocks, as he made two of those rejections in an Elite Eight victory over Florida at Madison Square Garden.

“We believe Sedee can really develop in our system as he works closely with our staff,” Mullin added. “His strength, physicality and ability to run the floor certainly will add a new dimension to our roster.”

Keita was the No. 22 rated power forward in the nation coming out of high school. Prior to South Carolina, he attended Shannon Forest Christian School and 22 Feet Academy in Greenville, S.C. Keita played alongside several high major Division I prospects and went up against top national competition at 22 Feet Academy under head coach Ryan Schmidt. Keita is also a former AAU teammate of fellow incoming transfer Mikey Dixon with the WE R1 program.

“I am excited and honored to join a program with such rich tradition and to play for a legend in Chris Mullin,” said Keita. “I look forward to continuing my growth on and off the court and to help St. John’s return to national prominence.”

Keita is the latest addition to a highly touted cast of newcomers joining the Red Storm basketball program. Dixon, the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, committed to St. John’s in April after averaging 16.5 points last season as a freshman at Quinnipiac. The Johnnies also recently signed New York City prospect Sidney Wilson, who is a 6-foot-7 consensus four-star wing, rated as high as No. 19 in the nation for his position in the Class of 2017.

One of the most improved teams in the nation last season, St. John’s returns its top three scorers from a club that saw its BIG EAST record increase by six wins in 2016-17. St. John’s up-tempo offense will again feature BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honorees Shamorie Ponds (17.4 ppg) and Marcus LoVett (15.9 ppg), who are the top returning scoring duo in the conference. Highly rated transfers Marvin Clark Jr. and Justin Simon will also make their debut in Queens next season.

Mullin is really using the transfer pool of talent to build his roster and it's the way his former coach at SJU Lou Carnesecca did.

QUEENS, N.Y. (June 6, 2017) – Rising junior guard Federico Mussini has decided to pursue a professional basketball career in Europe and will not return to St. John’s for the 2017-18 campaign.

“It was an honor to wear a St. John’s jersey for the last two years,” said Mussini. “This was an incredible experience for me to be a part of such a great university in New York City. I want to thank Coach Mullin and the entire coaching staff for everything I learned from them. I also want to thank all the St. John’s fans for their support at Carnesecca Arena and Madison Square Garden.”

Mussini played in 62 games and made 25 starts for the Red Storm over the past two seasons. The 6-foot-2 guard from Reggio Emilia, Italy averaged 9.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists during his career in Queens. Mussini also drained 112 3-pointers and shot 85.9 percent at the free-throw line.

“We are supportive of Federico’s decision and wish him the best of luck,” said St. John’s Head Coach Chris Mullin. “It was a pleasure to coach Federico for the last two years. He represented our program well both on and off the court. Federico is a terrific person and a model teammate with a bright future ahead.”

The BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree averaged 8.2 points playing 19.2 minutes per game over 30 appearances last season. Mussini finished second on the team with 56 threes on 42.7 percent shooting beyond the arc in 2016-17.

“I believe I am ready to take the next step in my career and play professionally back in Europe,” Mussini added. “I will never forget this experience and I am sure that my teammates will have very successful seasons ahead. I will always support them and the St. John’s basketball program.”

St. John’s may be acting fast after key guard returns to Italy

It’s been anything but a quiet spring in Queens. That was reinforced on Tuesday.

Sophomore guard Federico Mussini has decided to return home to Italy to play professionally for club team Reggio Emilia, the school announced. But it may not take too long to replace the Italian sharpshooter, who averaged 7.9 points and shot 42 percent from 3-point range last year.

High school senior guard Bryan Trimble, a three-star recruit who was recently let out of his National Letter of Intent by Florida State, began an official visit to the Queens schools on Monday night.

A source said the Johnnies are “exploring potential options” in the 6-foot-3 Trimble, who was released from his NLI on Thursday. Trimble comes from the same Kansas City-based AAU program, Mokan Elite, as Red Storm forward Marvin Clark Jr., the Michigan State transfer who will be eligible next season. St. John’s assistant Matt Abdelmassih has known Trimble for years, dating back to his days as an assistant at Iowa State.

Since the season ended, St. John’s has seen Malik Ellison, Darien Williams, Richard Freudenberg and now Mussini leave, while adding four-star Bronx wing Sidney Wilson and transfers Mikey Dixon (Quinnipiac) and Sedee Keita (South Carolina). Mussini and Freudenberg went back overseas to play professionally, Ellison transferred to Pittsburgh and Williams remains uncommitted. Transfers Clark (Michigan State) and Justin Simon (Arizona) also will be eligible after sitting out last season.

The Mussini news didn’t come as a surprise to the coaching staff, sources said. He communicated with coach Chris Mullin and Co. throughout the process. Reggio Emilia has been pushing hard for Mussini for quite some time.

The high-character Mussini was universally liked by those in and around the program. After playing out of position as a freshman at point guard, he accepted a role off the bench as a sophomore and improved as the season went on.

“It was a pleasure to coach Federico for the last two years,” Mullin said in a statement. “He represented our program well both on and off the court. Federico is a terrific person and a model teammate with a bright future ahead.”

St. John’s is prepared to enter the season with three scholarship guards in Marcus LoVett Jr., Shamorie Ponds and Simon. The coaching staff is confident it can play big at times, using wings Bashir Ahmed and Wilson, the incoming freshman, at shooting guard.

Mussini’s absence opens up a second scholarship for the coming season. It is unclear if St. John’s will fill either of them.

Also on Tuesday, St. John’s announced it has signed the South Carolina transfer Keita, a 6-foot-10 forward who will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out this coming season.

St. John’s will host four-star guard Luther Muhammad of Hudson Catholic (N.J.) on June 23-25, a source said. Notre Dame and Butler are also in the mix, among others.
