SPK breaks down the Big East's finances

This is a good and interesting analysis. More is better but the really important data are PB fundraising and the financial position of the University. Fortunately, these metrics keep improving. SHU is in the best financial shape in many years.

Steve did an outstanding job and for those who have looked at IRS Form 990 , I think it's on page 12 of the form you'll see the details of the most highly compensated employees of the school which includes those in the athletic department , generally the men's BB coach and the AD . Without any of us having access to the actual contract signed by Fox and the BE it's difficult to know why the disparity in the TV revenue stream . If you're not splitting the TV revenue evenly I could see growing discord of that factor down the road and that's not good for the conference. A conference is made up of equal partners and monies earned by the conference, not by its individual schools should be shared equally.

Maybe all the schools did not see themselves as equal partners and wanted more or would walk?

That may be true at the inception but that disparity should disappear over time similar to a sliding scale where a school were to receive 15% of the TV revenues in year one and being reduced whereby all ten members would receive the same over a specified time period.

Why? If someone holds the cards, they can drive a hard bargain. Someone could demand a bigger piece forever or they would not join, and maybe fox has no interest unless they do.

Do you walk or cave?

You would hope but I'm not so sure. We have a few schools in our conference that think a little too highly of themselves and think a little too lowly of us. We need to get consistently better as a team year after year to prove them wrong.

Expenses to run conference - $10M+ - well - at a loaded worker salary of $150K a person and an executive salary of $1M and four key lieutenants at $500K each, plus office rent midtown plus advertising, travel and living for key staff, I could see it all being gobbled up by a mere handful of busy people. But for ten schools managing their own overhead, this amounts of an ongoing $1M tax to run the conference. Just musing out loud.

Not only are we getting kicked in the ass at the bottom of the pile, but the money coming back is not helping us assume a non-prone position in all of this. Not only do we have to get to a post-season tournament like more than 5 out of every 10 years at a minimum, we have to manage to do it with the poorest reserve of the bunch.

It's really rather suck-worthy - in terms of the challenges.

At this point in time SH has the smallest pile of chips in the game so I would neither walk or cave. What I would do is put a proposal on the table as to what milestones every team in the Conference would have to meet in order to reach an equal or increased sharing of Conference revenues .

I have little doubt that Fox set certain demands in terms of what teams it wanted in order to enter into its contract with the New Big East and I'm sure that included Nova, GT & SJU and thus those schools held a superior position in its negotiations to join .
