Why are miscarriages being mentioned in the same breath as abortions? Miscarriages are a function of nature while abortions are elective surgeries.

Because without doing anything to address why women have abortions, abortions become “miscarriages” and we have not actually accomplished anything… and i don’t think we want to live in a society where we start investigating of miscarriages we’re legitimate or not…

Protests on the Supreme Court steps happen quite frequently by people on both sides of the political spectrum. That should mean all those protestors according to this statute should be arrested and prosecuted? Sometimes statutes are just not enforced. Second, this decision is already made is it not?

Isn’t it a problem when sometimes statutes are enforced and other times they are not?

Other than for the sport of the debate I do not see the practical point of debating when life begins.

It take 3-4 days for the embryo to form and travel down the fallopian tube and attach to the uterus. BTW, in the rare cases that the embryo attaches to the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy), it is not viable and is removed by surgery that is not considered an abortion.

It usually takes around 10 days or more before a pregnancy can be confirmed. By that time it is an embryo that is attached to the uterus and until shown otherwise, considered viable.

I know of no case where a zygote or blastocyst was detected in the fallopian tube and removed.

So the abortion debate should start at the point where it is known that an embryo is likely attached to the uterus. This is typically detected by a rise in hormones.

The IVF discussion brought up in previous posts is interesting. We faced that decision 32 years ago. My wife's recollection is that we had three fertilized eggs (actually zygotes, but we referred to them as eggs) and we implanted all three. I didn't recall the number but do recall wondering would would happen if they all took hold. Had we had more that 3, say 5, I can't say what we would have done and can't say if we would have viewed not returning all 5 as some form of abortion or murder. At the time, I know our sole focus was on having a child. We were fortunate to have a success. Our attempts at a second child did not succeed.

As an aside, at the time of our second child attempt, I was offered a 5% share of what is now Orasure. The friend putting the deal together wanted a $10,000 investment. We were young and were putting all our savings toward IVF. The medical insurance had a declining coverage scheme for IVF and hence each successive attempt cost more (upwards of $10,000 a pop). My friend offered to cover half the downside but we refused that because we were putting everything toward a second child. Orasure has market cap of $177M today. We have no regrets.

I do think protesting at their homes crosses a line.

Virgina Governor just shamed AG Garlsnd into action when he said he was sending police to protect the 3 justices homes who live in Virgins.Good old lap dog Garland probably told Biden he could no longer avoid the lawbreakers even though Biden would not criticize the protestors.The man who rushed to protect school boards when teachers complained didn’t have the same concern for the justices and the left thought Barr was a lapdog republicans have right to call boot licker Garland the real lapdog.
 
Ok Shu09, then you clearly believe that abortion is killing a baby. That is murder. Then doctors and women should be prosecuted for murder, isn't that correct? Isn't the logical conclusion to your argument that its murder and therefore it should be treated as murder. If you do not believe that doctors and women should be prosecuted as murderers, then you believe that the fetus is something other than a baby or a child. Otherwise, your views are in conflict with each other.

This is absolutely correct. It is in fact murder. This has always been the position of the Catholic Church. It’s a grave sin (only Christ can judge if a sin is mortal, ie definitively leads to eternal death). It is a grave sin against the 5th commandment (“Thou shalt not kill”). Not only is a murder, but it’s the murder of an innocent human being at its most vulnerable by an intentional decision of the person on whom it is totally reliant for its care.

This is exactly why abortion is such a radical departure from both the natural law and the history of Western civilization.
 
Curious how many on this board agree with the Schumer proposal that abortion be permitted up to the point if birth.This bill failed because Joe Manchin voted against it.Every other democratic voted for it and ,of course,that great catholic Joe abiden was willingly to sign it if it passed.Wow how far we have come from Roe wonder how any.catholic could support this bill ,but I guess those who would are in the roughly 80% who don’t go to church but identify as catholic
