RIO VERDE, ARIZ. - Senior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) edged teammate Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) in a playoff to win the individual title and lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to the team championship at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.

In a Seton Hall first, McClure and Kruse were tied for the individual lead after 54 holes and had to compete in a playoff to crown the individual champion. McClure won on the playoff's second hole to become the first golfer in Pirate history to win two individual tournament titles. The victory was made more special considering she was playing in front of several members of her family and friends as she hails from nearby Tucson, Ariz.

For the tournament, McClure and Kruse were 2-over-par. McClure shot a 71-73-74-218, while Kruse had a 72-74-72-218.

Collectively, Seton Hall claimed its seventh tournament title in program history, besting a strong field of 16 other teams, including BIG EAST foe Xavier, which finished 32 strokes behind The Hall. The Pirates shot a 14-over-par, 302, in round three to win the tournament by four strokes over second place Toledo. For the three-day event, the Pirates finished at 32-over-par with a 296-298-302-896. Seton Hall would have won in an even more dominant fashion had Cassie Pantelas' (Canton, Ohio) score counted. The freshman shot a 75 in Sunday's final round, but improperly signed her scorecard, and thus was disqualified. With Pantelas' score, The Hall would have shot a final round 293 and won the event by 13 strokes.

Despite the scorecard gaffe, Pantelas had a strong tournament for the Pirates. If counted, she would have shot a 10-over-par, 74-77-75-226, which would have been in the top-20.

"I'm really happy with the way we played today," said head coach Sara Doell. "This team continues to find ways to better itself. They used a strong Spring Break week of competition, relaxation and fun, and it certainly paid dividends."

It's apropos that McClure and Kruse would eventually finish #1 and #2 at the top of a leader board. The duo are arguably the most decorated in program history. This finish is the 16th top-10 in Kruse's illustrious career, the most all-time. It's McClure's 11th, second-most ever.

"Erin and Ali performed at such a high level all weekend and today they made Seton Hall history," Doell said. "They are such intense competitors and they're a joy to coach. They deserve this."

Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) improved each day of the tournament, saving her best for round three on Sunday. The junior fired an even-par, 72, to shoot 22 places up the individual leader board and finish in a tie for 17th. Tenhundfeld finished the event at 10-over-par with a 79-75-72-226.

McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) finished the 54-hole event at 23-over-par with a 79-76-84-239.

Because this is Seton Hall's Spring Break, the Pirates were able to bring their entire roster to Arizona. Junior Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) and freshman Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) also competed this weekend. They played in a 36-hole event at Quail Run.

In addition to Seton Hall and host Western Michigan, the field included ULAR, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Wichita State, Ball State, Northern Arizona, Xavier, Missouri State, Bradley, Ohio, Akron, Texas A & M - CC.

Seton Hall will return to the links next weekend as it will play three rounds of golf at the Bearcats Spring Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Women's volleyball - 28-8 Lost in Big East finals - NCAA berth
Speaking of women's volleyball here's a small sample of part one of our latest Trove interview with volleyball head coach Allsion Yaeger. Part two will be an interview with Big East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Shelby Manthrope.

While the players she's recruited up to this point had obvious talent and have produced results on the court, Yaeger admits that her overall recruiting philosophy has changed with the success and accomplishments the program has achieved in recent years.

"It's hard now because I'm not settling for anybody with just good talent, I refuse to do that. I'm only settling for top players from top clubs meaning at times I don't always get positive feedback… If I send out 50 e-mails now I get maybe 10 responses," said Yaeger, who previously would receive few if any responses from the top national players. "Now our name is out there… I wouldn't say recruiting is easier, but definitely our name is known and we're hoping to get some top recruits in the next couple of years."

As the team's results can attest, Zeiter and now Yaeger have clearly both had success in stringing together successful recruiting classes for the Pirates over the last several years. Yaeger claims the small-college feel is a major selling point for some young ladies, provided the coaches can get them to visit Seton Hall's South Orange, N.J. campus.

"The hardest part is getting recruits to come to South Orange. Once we get them on the campus they absolutely love it if they're looking for a smaller school."

The facility improvements that took place over the last several years, which include the program's own locker room, a new varsity weight room and sports training center, have made Seton Hall a much easier sell for recruits that visit the campus.

"What we have done in the last two years is blowing my mind...............

Let's focus on the positive and congratulate and support our other great athletic programs, as outlined above. The players, coaches, etc. deserve our recognition, praise and support.

Coaching. Coaching. Coaching.

Well maybe not coaching with golf, I don't know anything about golf. "Uh, hit the ball straight." But the team sports? Coaching.

Coaching is a big reason why we're as good as we are in women's golf. Don't sell Sara short on the work she's done in a very short period of time starting a program from scratch.

College golf is a team sport, with lineups and stuff, and all of the other programmatic details.
