All signs point to Harvard giving the keys to freshman PG Tommy McCarthy following (PG) Siyani Chambers' injury. Going to log major minutes.

Chambers will be back next season to play the point. Possible logjam at that position if Aiken commits to Amaker.

let's get it done. Assuming there's a better than 50% chance that IW could be gone after this year, he's got the chance to come in and start as a Freshman. That should be attractive unless he wants the academic prestige of Harvard.

I have to figure Zags didn't write such a positive article for us with no reason. I feel good about this one too.

I was hoping you were going to say a C grade in math from middle school was caught by Harvard admissions office.
Bryce is better than those other guys so I'm not sure that it would scare him into thinking he would ride the bench.

You've seen Siyana Chambers? Pretty good player ...

Amaker has started sort of an arms race in the Ivy league. Other schools are now responding in kind. The Ivys have a lot to offer academically. Not as big of gap talent wise between the Ivys and others as there may have been 10yrs or more ago.

I agree Loki but Amaker still has a significant advantage over the other coaches in the Ivy League because he has a very high name recognition factor and still attracts very positive media attention plus he's an outstanding recruiter.

I love Seton Hall as much as the next guy on this board. But if you have a chance to go to Harvard, wouldn't you? As a parent, if your child was offered a basketball scholarship from Harvard and SHU, what would be the argument FOR Seton Hall? Is being "close to home" better than attending arguably the best university in the world? Harvard opens a lot of doors to their alumni. Whereas I had much difficulty after graduating getting any support from SHU alumni in my field (thankfully that wasn't the case from my law school alums).

yeah, if it were my kid and they had a chance to go to Harvard (especially if fully paid for), it would be hard to justify going elsewhere.

I think that's called a "no-brainer". You still need to do the work and graduate, but the network and open doors that come with a Harvard degree?

If you limit the question to a choice between SH or Harvard then it's an easy choice it's Harvard. However don't forget that there are other outstanding universities with great academic credentials like Stanford or Northwestern or Georgetown or Notre Dame where a talented player can go and play in a major conference against really good competition and be on the national stage. The much more difficult question for TA is whether he can get that highly regarded player who has to choose between a Harvard or a Stanford,NW, GT or ND and several others.

It depends what a kid is looking for....if his decision is solely based on academics then he would be a fool not to go to Harvard, but if he has a desire to play basketball at the highest level he might go to a premier school in the BIGEAST, PAC10, BigTen, or ACC.

Don't get me wrong Harvard is Harvard, but the cream always rises to the top regardless of where your degree is from.

That is why taking on Thomas's scholarship in what is so called a make or break year makes absolutely no sense. If Thomas could have played this season I would feel a lot differently (and he probably would have helped since we don't have a true PG). So Aiken, Powell, Whitehead, Carrington, and Thomas could be our guards next season. How are those minutes going to be distributed? You can't play 3 guards in league play and think that's gonna work. Hall needs some size (and a legitimate prospect) rather than another guard at this point.

I have no issue with either Isaiah or Khadeem running the team. I do wish we had Thomas but more for depth. For that reason taking a kid with a sit out year was odd to me.

If we do land Aiken and Whitehead returns we actually have six guards in Whitehead , Carrington, Thomas , Powell, Aiken and Soffer .

Is it bad to wish Aiken a horrible visit to Miami? Jim Larranaga is a good coach and will really put a full court press on Aiken while in Miami. I think they scare me more than Harvard to be honest.

Full Athletic scholarships are given at most division one schools.I believe it used to be that you got a financial aid package if you were recruited to an ivy school and it was not a "free ride" by any means. Have the Ivies changed their "package"?

That would really surprise me. Anything is possible but Miami is going to have to knock his socks off on the visit to be a factor.

Sweating Harvard right now.

Let's hope the Florida schools don't go 2 for 2 . First Jones-Pack to UCF out of nowhere and now Miami has a shot at Aiken.

Whitehead leaving after this year is very optimistic [for him]. I'd say the chances are more 20-80 that he leaves, and if he does it is more likely he will to play in Ubekistan.

I was just thinking the exact same thing. It would be a hard choice for me if I was as athletic as these kids.... Play Big East hoops or get an amazing degree from Harvard. If it was me, it would be the hardest decesion of my life up until that point.

Unless the Aiken family is particularly needy, Bryce will not qualify for Scholarship $-of course, if necessary, I'm sure Tommy can manipulate some sort of financial aid package for him. The bigger ? remains: Does Bryce want to play in front of family and friends on a daily basis-if that is important to him, than this party is over-Seton it is

With all due respect, the Ivies give athletes "athletic scholarships" , they just don't call them that and they ave nothing todo with "need". That's what zillion dollar endowment funds are used for. Shamaker is responsible for the Ivies "lowering" their academic standards - at least in bball so they can "compete" with Harvard.

Harvard has the ability to run their entire school ,without collecting a cent of tuition from students, just with the returns from their endowments. This has been a big push for all the Ivy's to be able to do the same. If you get accepted and don't have the means to pay, they will cover your tuition costs. Harvard by far has the largest endowment, but other Ivy schools are doing the same. They are setting endowment goals of being able to cover all student tuition, and the alumni have been responding positively to this.
This is why years ago Northwestern tried to get out of the BIG when they applied to the Ivy league and was turned down. The alumni support of all Ivy league schools far exceeds what football and basketball can bring in.

There will always be schools that have an advantage over other schools whether it be an Ivy League school, a Duke, Kansas, UConn or others but the biggest factor that allows schools that are at a disadvantage to compete remains, and will continue to be, who the head coach is . We've seen that over and over again , whether it be a Shaka Smart at VCU or a Brad Stevens at Butler and numerous other examples and we'll have to wait and see how this year plays out with our recruiting .

The weather down here in South Florida is great this weekend, BTW.

Where you at Steve?

Tell me, do you still believe in the tooth fairy too? If Bryce goes to Harvard he won't pay a red cent.

I would like to take this opportunity to commend our fellow posters who opined that if the kid choose Harvard as his final destination Mother Seton would be proud of your self sacrifice and charitable nature. o_O

Aiken is a nice player but won't be a difference maker at SHU. Different position but sort of like that kid who went to Illinois.

Very important if Whitehead leaves early. Then we absolutely need another point to go along with Thomas.
