Top 25

Lot of a good buzz on seton hall on twitter. I am going with 23. Lots of losses from ranked teams across the spectrum. Great for local coverage and confident coach Holloway will keep the team grounded. Let’s keep it going on Tuesday or being in the poll will be short stay. Students back on campus will great juice as classes do not start until the next day.

Based on this week's results, it will be a lot closer than I would have thought. The beginning of conference play has had a big effect.

I went through every team that received a vote this week and there are a ton of losses scattered throughout.

Notable in the top 15:

No. 9 Oklahoma lost twice at TCU and at Kansas.
No. 11 Marquette lost its only game home against Butler

With that I don't think either has any real effect on us getting in or staying out. Here's what everyone from No. 16 on down to us at No. 34 did this week.

No. 16 Auburn: Home win over Texas A&M, home win over LSU
No. 17 Colorado State: Loss at Boise State
No. 18 BYU: Loss at Baylor, home win over UCF
No. 19 San Diego State: Win at San Jose State, loss at New Mexico
No. 20 Utah State: Home win over Wyoming, win at UNLV
No. 21 Clemson: Loss at Virginia Tech, home win over Boston College
No. 22 Creighton: Win at De Paul, home win over St. John's
No. 23 Gonzaga: Loss at Santa Clara
No. 24 Florida Atlantic: Win at Tulane, home win over UAB
No. 25 Texas: Win at Cincinnati, loss at West Virginia
ARV Dayton: Win at Duquesne
ARV Mississippi: Home wins over Florida and Vanderbilt
ARV James Madison: Home win over South Alabama, loss at Appalachian State
ARV Cincinnati: Home loss to Texas, loss at Baylor
ARV Nevada: Home win over Air Force, home loss to Boise State
ARV Texas Tech: Home wins over Oklahoma State and Kansas State
ARV Wake Forest: Loss at Florida State, home win over Virginia
ARV Grand Canyon: Home wins over Abilene Christian and Tarleton State
ARV Seton Hall: Wins at Georgetown and Butler

Below that:

ARV Iowa State: Home wins over Houston and Oklahoma State
ARV Alabama: Home win over South Carolina, win at Mississippi State
ARV TCU: Home wins over Oklahoma and Houston (both top 10 last week)

I'd expect Texas and Gonzaga to fall out. Maybe Clemson does too but I don't think it's a sure thing. Mississippi will move back in. We're battling Texas Tech for the second opening and we'd both get in if Clemson slips out.

Thanks for the analysis. Well done

Jerry ranking us is a good sign. His poll usually does not vary from the mean.

Seth Davis dissecting the top 25. No surprise highlights our metrics as a negative. May impact seeding and ranking but baby just keep winning and those things will work out.

I think we could be edged by TCU if there is an extra spot up for grabs.

Recency bias is huge in these votes. Same week beating #9 Oklahoma and #2 Houston is going to turn a lot of heads. 13-3 overall, 29 NET, only loses to Nevada, Clemson and @ Kansas by 2.

I do believe we have a stronger resume that Texas Tech. But they are tied for first in B12 and 14-2 looks better on paper than 12-5.

Won’t be shocked if we sneak in. But my gut says 26th or 27th.

I dont care much if we make it. I think we should. Hope we do. Love Sha using it for fodder tonight if we dont. We are legitimately in the top 25 conversation. We get mentioned on a show and positive things follow - and we deserve it! Never get sick of that.

They deserve to be ranked but hope they aren’t come Monday for all the reasons we know.
We don't lose games because we are ranked. When our team gets ranked, it's usually the end result of several weeks of hard fought wins. The reality of that is, our team and most others, would be due for a loss sooner or later after such a run. We don't get the benefit of the doubt on rankings, so unfortunately we usually achieve them on the end of whatever run we are on.

My opinion, you take any opportunity to be ranked that you get. No sense holding onto a loser mindset that you need to be unranked to stay hungry and play your best ball.

If we don’t lose to the last place BIG team at home then we’d be ranked

TCU only got three votes last week but I think they have a better case for getting in than Seton Hall. Nearly won at Kansas, just beat Houston and Oklahoma this week. Played nobody out of conference (lost to Clemson and Nevada) but you can't argue with those wins. They could make the jump all the way up into the poll based on recency.

I am glad to be in the conversation and think we deserve it and think we can be in it for the long run. We shall see. Tonight will be fun!!

Nice analysis. It's not just teams in the top 25 losing that helps Seton Hall its teams ranked 20 to 25 losing that helps. Agree with the poster above who said the Hall is getting a lot of buzz. It's deserved .

Parcels famously said that you are what your record says you are. Your record has shown that you can play with, and beat anyone. If you aren't ranked in this weeks poll, you will be in the next one.

I could argue against seth davis as well. Instead of saying well ahu has terrible metrics, i could say how can a 1st place BE team have terrible metrics....maybe its the metrics

nearly winking at kansas should mean nothing. they lost. houston and OK good wins although i think OK is trending down like marquette

Think we will be just outside and among the top 3 also receiving votes. Most people aren’t paying close attention and our metrics don’t look great at first blush.

I’ve seems a handful of polls writers have put out… the one guy has us 15th, one writers has us 16th, 2 have shu 18th, 22nd, 23, and I think 2 25… out of all the voters that post their polls ahead of time, only one writer, guy from Nevada has shu out… I think it will all depends on what happens with the west coast writers, they obviously have a bias with west coast teams..

Bias is in the eye of the beholder. It can also be said that people here have a SHU bias.

Closest thing to the truth is that it’s all subjective and no one really knows.

Obviously people on the west coast will have a bias to local teams and teams they see a lot more, people on the east coast will also have that same bias for east coast teams.. it’s normal tendency to have that, as it is our normal tendency to have a bias towards shu and the fact we all believe they should be ranked

A stubborn coach sticks with his Sr PG, they have a mediocre OOC. They pile up good wins and look like a different team after he finally subs in his underrated frosh. But the stats for how they played under the other PG still drags them down. Or like us, we just figure it out and now look like a different team. But the turn overs and margins of victory for games we played and won in December drag down our NET. If we lost to Wagner and got penalized, I get it. If we played like crap and won by 7, then I dont.

Some guy loses 50 lbs, works his ass off and is in great shape, and has a great job but cant get a date cause when he was in college he was fat. Not in the world I live in...

If there are two teams so close by the eye test you have a hard time deciding who is better, both have similar wins and losses, play in a similar conference, have similar OOC and overall SOS, I can see using the NET. I cant imagine anyone needing to go that granular till the committee. Was this designed as a tool for the committee? Does anyone know who contracted to get it written and what was its stated purpose? How many negatives a team has in games they win goes into the WGAS category for me. It is an area for opposing coaches to attack, but if they keep on winning, it is meaningless.

The overall record is what is holding us back. Marquette would be the only other ranked team with five losses if we make it.

I can see TCU getting in but it's a big jump in points and a lot of teams to jump.

I've said pretty consistently that we wouldn't get in this week even with two wins. I'm only coming around because so many of the teams we're competing with for votes lost this week.

Dayton is next in line before Seton Hall and Texas Tech. #26 last week.
I thought about Dayton but wonder if mid-major bias will work against them. They only played once this week and while it was a road win, it came against a mediocre Duquesne team.

I think Mississippi gets in above Dayton. If the Flyers do get in, it comes at our expense.

The first inclination is to insult? Dumbest mindset? Just say you disagree.

And while the recognition is nice we don’t want this team to get satisfied as they did against Xavier. Pure speculation on my part, but I’d bet Sha would prefer to be unranked.
Great points.

Wow, not just Gonzaga and Texas were kicked out of the AP poll but also Clemson, SDSU, and Colorado State. They are replaced by TCU, Dayton, Ole Miss, Iowa State, and Texas Tech.

Seton Hall checks in at #28, third outside the poll. UConn now #1 in the country.
