I truly love SHU and Sha as our coach, but as the days go bye him stating how he "learned a lot last season of what not to do" seems to be doing it again and like many here have stated we have 5 players, I am not in this business so I hope somebody can tell him what to do, but go grab some high school seniors with game, the Fab 5 worked remember, not saying that level but some group who is young energetic and looking to run......

Speculation, but it seems to me that maybe Shaheen planned to recruit more proven scorers (mid major, low major, whatever) in this cycle. Which was a logical response to last season’s debacle.

The execution of this plan, however, once again looks very slipshod and amateurish. No clear targets, difficulty closing kids that show interest, etc.

I think he wanted to recruit proven scorers but a leopard doesn’t change his spots and he can never get past the idea they won’t play high level D. Whether that means he’s putting stipulations about playing D they won’t agree to and they are moving on or he’s just moving on to more defensive oriented players I don’t know.

There seems to be some huge disconnect no one can identify.

You should watch Jerry Carino's most recent Jersey Jump Shot podcast. He states that the schools with mega money will be eating first, than schools like SHU will follow. It's way too early to be complaining about portal signings, more than 85% of portal players are still available for the taking.

I don’t agree with this. A school with a $5 million budget can swim in the deep end immediately. They just can’t grab as many studs as the big boys. We can get 1 or 2 rather than 4 or 5. But 1 or 2 is all you need.

But 80% of those players are severely flawed. I get what Jerry is saying. That’s free agency. But there’s enough red flags for genuine concern.

Will any players return? Only Godswill? Just curious or will we have all new players. Losing track of who is in portal. Might not be a bad thing I guess. Just crazy the turnover.

Based on the guys we've been trying for, it seems Sha is not going for proven HM players that will cost 7 figures. Looks to me like he's going for an evenly spread out $3-3.25m for his starters (500-700k) and $0.75k-M for his bench.

I think we all believe that to be a mistake. Pay the freight to get 1 guy you can count on and build around. Even if that guy is $1.5m that's the way to go.

I would give the 99% of that $5m to 6 guys and pray you get lucky with some other pieces l.

We had one guy on our roster who commanded $1+ million— Coleman. Apparently we didn’t want to pay him. Or maybe he just wanted out regardless.

Everyone is getting paid it’s just how and when you pay them.
Yea I'm not sure how that applies to the young/teenage Euro kids who are getting paid already by the professional organization they are part of and are on "loan" to the US. But you still need to (a) have that pipeline and (b) have teams and coaches willing to "loan" their kids to you.

We don't have 5 million. It's obvious. We don't have it until the revenue sharing is passed. Like buying a million dollar house with 10k
not sure the best analogy is one where people buy something with only 10% of the money haha

but banks give out loans they can recoup, not sure how anyone gets their money back from this.

I believed in Sha until yesterday when I was told that he refuses to be the face of the university. He just wants to coach and has no part of fundraising. I was truly disappointed and hope I was mis informed but I doubt it.
Fundraising was part of the job pre-NIL. If this is true, then I have so many questions.

Most people have unpleasant aspects of job they’d rather not deal with. He gets paid the big bucks to handle it all.

Not sure that’s either fair or accurate. He’s coming to Florida to do a pretty nice fundraising event later this month.

Maybe put $4 million to the starting 5, however that needs to be distributed. That should, presumably, get you a workable lineup.

To fill out the roster, maybe bring in 3 - 5 HS kids in the 50 - 150 range; shouldn't cost much, and though they may not stay (who stays anyway?) you might get lucky with 1 or 2 as serviceable pieces off the bench...and who knows, maybe you retain 1 or 2.

The rest of the roster you fill with "flyers"...portal kids who have some upside, but aren't attracting much attention because of whatever flaws they have in their game.

Then pray for no injuries to your top 5...!

But without a competitive budget...we have to do something differently...we cannot compete "head to head" with most of the P4 or the BE for that matter...

Sha saw that the “Big 3” model (Kadary/Dre/Dawes) worked so he decided he’d rather be non-competitive and spread the wealth amongst questionable Big East talent. Obviously he’s not pulling in a Kadary or Dre or even Dawes ever again in this current college basketball model, but to repeat what he did last year (looks to be shaping up that way) is criminal.

What’s also more alarming is how many of those players were not even close to BE talent. As coaches who do this for living, it’s very troubling. Why they now have a disgusting 7-25, 2-18 to their name.

Holloway mentioned something recently about scouting and how you can’t rely on stats and videos (like fans lol). IDK if he was simply talking about the importance or it was an inadvertent admission to how they went about looking at that roster given they coached late in the NIT in 2024.

I doubt this is correct. I got an email from Pirate Blue about some upcoming alumni event Sha is doing in Florida.

I’m thinking Sha doesn’t want to be the head of fundraising and would prefer that the fundraising people, if we have any, actually do their job and raise funds so that he could do what he was hired to do and coach.

Except that in a world with no roster continuity year to year, the coach effectively is the product. If the on-court results were enough to sell themselves then maybe he could get away with being invisible outside of game day, but with where they are right now, we need him to do things to make himself a more marketable product.

Coming off a horrendous season I get the gloom. But the hammering of Sha day in and day out isn’t good. Let’s see what he assembles before you call for his head.

We played the “let’s wait and see” game last year too after Kadary and Dre left. How’d that work out?
