Not sure about the off field distractions, im
Sure they don’t help… but the rest of the world has caught up, and has surpassed the us women in terms of technical abilities. Us has an advantage in athleticism but even that is closing…

The most disjointed US side I've ever seen. The rest of the world has caught up tactically and technically. We still think we can win with athleticism.

Can someone explain to me how a country catches up technically? I see this comment frequently? Just genuinely curious. And what steps would US soccer need to take to progress technically?

Better coaching and training. Spain, England, and even a country like Portugal have received MUCH better coaching in the last 10-15 years. And in that time they've closed the gap on us, especially when it comes to technical ability. Watching Portugal play vs. us with the ball at their feet was pretty remarkable. I don't know if I'd say the US needs to improve technically, they were the standard (along with countries like Japan) forever. Where I'd say they need to improve is tactically.

it mean countries like france, Spain, England, Netherlands, Sweden are getting better skill wise. These countries are starting to put more money into coaching for youth girls soccer and they are getting almost the same training as the boys. Better training than you get in the USA. You can see in the Netherlands game, USA is still superior in athleticism and just bigger and stronger, but the approach and skill to the game is just better on the other side… the technical abilities of the players from these countries are just getting better and better

Same thing happened in basketball last 20 years

Maybe if the US women focused on soccer instead of constantly telling us how oppressed they are and what their political views are they may have fared better.
Stop enough of this. I’m tired of people saying this and blaming it all on the coach… it’s a systemic issue right now with us women’s soccer that’s being covered up with their pure physical abilities… to tell you the truth I am not sure when we see USWNT win the cup again until they change things

Problem is 20 years ago or so countries spent zero money on girls youth training… now they are… when I was younger the British coaches would always say how much better the American girls are than the British because they have better training and more opportunity… it’s why Kelly Smith came to Seton Hall… it’s not like that no and this is the first group really of women around the world that have benefitted… the rest of the world should thank the USWNT for opening doors for them in their country…… which is ironic because that is the downfall of USWNT right now… but it was bound to happen… question is how much smaller does the gap in pure athleticism get closer

We still have the best setup in the world. Even if it's closing and closing fast. But this is my biggest fear. You watch and our women rely sooooo much on their athleticism. When that goes away it will be very interesting where the US woman stack up. This crop of youngsters is really, really good. They were just led out to pasture with who they put in charge. A better coach will get a lot more out of this group of players.

Their players focus on playing, Not proselytizing. How many of the world’s other teams spend their time hectoring their home countries?

Sweden really focused on playing the game today as they created two shots on goal that probably amounted to an xG of .10. Give me a break. The US lost today because Sweden's goalie was incredible. They lost in a PK shootout which is the biggest of crap shoots. They lost because their coach wasn't good enough and relied on players who were past their prime. You can not like them because they speak out. That's fine, it's your choice. But can everyone stop acting like the reason they lost is because they've made comments you didn't like or agree with?

I agree that they didn’t lose because of their selfish and boorish behavior. This is more of a “karma is a b_t_h” lesson.

We're still ranked #1 in the world, so the shrinking gap of skill vs. athleticism shouldn't have been enough for them to lose in the round of 16, which has never happened.

I've said it before, I have enough knowledge close to the team to suggest that the attitude was bad, and that's a big factor. I coached girls soccer almost exclusively, and from a development perspective (e.g., technical, tactical, physical, and psychosocial), there is more emphasis on the psychosocial than with men.

You see this all the time in pro sports - when a player doesn't want to be with a team, or has some other ulterior motives, the play is impacted. Regardless of our assessment of the teams in the WWC, it's still the highest level of play for women's soccer - any micro deficiency is going to have an impact.

4 years ago, Rapinoe was a problem and Lloyd was having none of it. They won because Lloyd put the team on her back - on field and off. She's gone now, so Rapinoe had run of the locker room, and it most certainly impacted the on field play.

I'd be lying if I didn't have that same thought about Rapinoe when she missed. So I do agree with you there.

That's not the point - it's not about speaking out. It's about the mindset behind the scenes. There's a lot of intimidation and fear to conform to a certain point of view - you don't think that has an impact on play?

Can you please tell me where I blamed or even mentioned the coach!? This is all on the players! Soccer is not their #1 focus, hasn’t been for quite some time now!

Agreed. People forget that Abby Wambach was a physical nightmare for the International teams. A true difference maker. Add in that they have been losing some great players over A period of time. So, yes the rest of the world has caught up. I still believe they are a distracted unit. I can’t speak to each individual, but I’m not sure they feel it’s an honor and privilege to represent their country as a group. The negative energy may not help their cause and focus.

Excellent post.
I watched the whole game and this is spot on.

Maybe they just payed poorly until today and lost to a better team. The political stuff had nothing to do with having a lousy tournament, although the right loves to obsess about such stupidity.

It's odd that showing pride in representing your country has turned into a left vs. right thing, but that is a page out of the Karl Marx playbook.

Anyway, the US youth soccer training scene is flipped on its head compared to international from a cost perspective, and now that more countries actually care about it, the women are beginning to experience what the men's side has. There have been some efforts to impact it, but the reality is that higher levels of players have costs removed for them internationally whereas the US model takes advantage of the parents with money to burn & no realization that their kids are not going to the World Cup. This is changing somewhat with more coordination & consolidation of top level youth development, but it still is expensive to play at levels where those consolidated programs would have any chance of seeing the best players versus the very good players with deepest pocketed parents.

I didn’t realize the simple act of showing pride and respect for representing your country is only something the “right” cares about.

That wasn’t in response to what you said…. A lot of people are saying they should have focused more on soccer and less on the political BS or what you said…. Also a lot of people are blaming the coach… coach isn’t blameless but there’s more to it than that

If you don’t think the world has caught up big time you are fooling yourself… the gap of skill vs athleticism shouldn’t have been enough for them to lose in the round of 16? They were a ball hitting the post away from not making it out of the damn group…

Not saying outside stuff didn’t play a part, but have you ever seen a us womens team get embarrassed like they did in the first half vs NED in a World Cup game? Us women still rely on speed to just run by defenders…. They have an issue the men have of having no creativity in the final 1/3 of the field.. it’s all 1v1….

Wambach was about 6 foot I think and was a beast physically… I remember watching games and the defender on corners went up to her shoulders. Complete mismatch

Sounds like a top down issue. Perhaps it will change when people care enough to make it a priority. You can't completely discount the off the field stuff, because that drives eyeballs and money away from the program.

I was all in on the USWNT until public displays overshadowed the game, millions of others have lost interest and that takes a bunch of money out of the program.

Nope you can’t, and I won’t discount the coach also… seems they have a similar coach on the women’s side as the men’s side and the picked the coach the same way..
