Awake at this ridiculous time because I have a very early appointment to get a booster shot so I wanted to post before I leave the house.

BTW, I have not responded well to my previous shots so I don't know if I'll be back on the board when I return at 9AM.

Thoughts and observations looking ahead to the Longhorns on Thursday:

Scouting Texas. The Longhorns (6-1) have ventured on the road only once this season, and were drubbed 86-74 by then-No. 1 Gonzaga on Nov. 13, a game Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard specifically referenced having watched two days later in the post-game after his Pirates beat Yale. Since then, Texas has beaten up on a succession of mid- and low-majors at home.

Texas has nine players averaging at least 13 minutes and six averaging at least 8.9 points. Minnesota transfer Marcus Carr averages 8.9 points and 4.1 assists. Texas has shot 39.4% from three-point range against a mostly weak schedule, so that should be a point of emphasis on defense for The Hall.

Player updates. Willard didn’t give an update on whether Bryce Aiken (ill, not COVID) would be available to face the Longhorns. “I'm not a doctor,” he said. He also said that Brandon Weston (knee), though cleared for contact in practice, is not cleared for games yet. He was dressed but did not play against Nyack.

Samuel emerging. Granted, it was against Nyack, but Tyrese Samuel had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Although he was happy with his performance, even Samuel said, to his credit, “It's a good confidence-booster, but I can’t settle for this.”

Willard said, “Tyrese is starting to make that jump that most of our guys do their junior year. I think the biggest thing for Tyrese is he’s not settling for being outside. … He’s being a bit more physical inside and trying to get to the rim more.”

Samuel a Walsh fan. Despite the impracticality from an attendance standpoint, Samuel couldn’t hide his appreciation for historic Walsh Gymnasium.

“The Pru is good, too, but I prefer Walsh,” Samuel said. “I feel like the energy is higher. You can hear everyone screaming.”

And the best thing? Samuel said, “It’s at school, so you don’t have to travel.

Isn't it Granda? When walk-on Sylwester Granda made a driving layup and got fouled in the waning moments, Jamir Harris bear-hugged him and lifted him up. Meanwhile, the Seton Hall bench reacted as if the basket had clinched the Big East title.

“That's the greatest thing,” Samuel said. “Because he comes every day. He works hard. He practices hard. … It was a good moment for everyone.”

Cale said, “And he’s all about the team, too. He works hard every day. Everybody loves him. He talks to everybody. He has a relationship with everybody. It's awesome to see Sly get to it like that.”
