The guy is one of the worst officials out there, and clearly biased against the Hall year after year (although in fairness he sucks to everyone, we just seem to get it worse). He makes random calls all over the place, all the time. Just has to blow the whistle if he hasn't in a while, like he has an internal clock. Seems like he just wants to draw attention to himself, especially the way he dances around when he makes a call. I'm sure there's a better word for it than dancing because it looks awful but that's the best I've got.
But I just watched the game on DVR when I got home and I felt like I had to make my first post in a while because I was so annoyed at the guy. It wasn't worse than lots of his other calls, it was just the most obviously inappropriate:
At 9:48 in the first half, Ish has a sweet put back jam off a Khadeen drive and missed lay up. We hear a whistle. It's called offensive in the cylinder. At this point I stop and rewind the live broadcast and slow-mo it and see the ball is clearly out of the cylinder, so it's a bad call. I think, that sucks, but whatever, it happens. I keep my DVR moving forward.
Then they show us another angle from behind the baseline. Here's the commentary from the hometown
ASN/A10 guys as they show it in slow-MO:
1st guy: "Ishmael Sunungo (yeah he said Sunungo)...he plays on the rim. Take a look at the shot by Carrington, absorbs the contact, finishes
2nd guy, just as we see the ball is way out of the cyliner: "Oooohhhh..."
1st guy: "And to me that was a clean put-back."
2nd guy: "Yeah"
1st guy: "Perhaps should have counted. That's one of the more difficult plays to judge. (Then we see yet another angle that makes it obvious the ball was out of the cylinder). That's definitely not in the cylinder."
2nd guy: "What's interesting is that call was made by the official out near mid-court. "
1st guy: "Yeah, yeah. And he didn't have the best of angles."
2nd guy: "No he didn't."
1st guy: "I've gotta say they missed that one."
2nd guy: "Yeah. The official right under the hoop didn't call anything. So, that's two points the Pirates really shoulda had."
Well, of course I went back and looked at who the mid-court official was. You guessed it, it was Mr. self-obsessed black hair dye Wally Rutecki. Calls in the cylinder from half court. If I wanted to be charitable to Wally (I don't), I could point out that the direction where the ball went out of the cylinder the ball was directly between Rutecki and the cylinder, so from Wally's point of view the ball may have looked like it was in the cylinder. But if Rutecki is too stupid to know there's a huge part of "out of the cylinder" he can't judge from mid court, he is in no position to be officiating games at this level. But then he's proved that for years.
Sorry if I sound like Jim Calhoun on Rutecki but this just got my blood boiling because it was so obviously inappropriate. He was wrong (wish they could have reviewed it on video), but even worse he had absolutely no business making a call from there. He blew the whistle because he wants to blow the whistle. Why does this egotistic idiot keep getting hired year after year when he so clearly sucks?
