The NFL’s Washington franchise has come closer than ever to changing its name, and it could be closing in on a new one.

Since owner Daniel Snyder announced with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell last Friday that the ‘Redskins’ name was going under review, ‘Warriors’ has emerged as a frontrunner for the franchise’s new moniker, according to reports.

“I think people do know that the Redskins have marked Washington Warriors just in case and that this has been the way…” The Team 980’s Kevin Sheehan said on his podcast. “I would bet big money on the Warriors being the new name for the football team.”

Earlier this month, Sheehan referred to the name as the “definite leader in the clubhouse,” but confirms that there has not been an official reveal.

After years of criticism and protests due to the franchise’s name and logo, coupled with recent pressure from several sponsors and retailers, the club has decided to conduct a “thorough review” of its identity.

For years, the franchise has defended the name, and Snyder himself long resisted the name change since he bought the team in 1999. During a 2013 interview, he famously said, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use all caps.”

On Wednesday, Amazon officially pulled all Redskins gear from its stores, following Walmart, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Nike. Corporate sponsors — including PepsiCo, Bank of America and and FedEx, which holds naming rights to the Redskins’ stadium in Landover, Md. — have called on the franchise to find a new name.

Marquette's intercollegiate athletic teams were the "Warriors" from May 1954 to July 1994, when the nickname was changed to the "Golden Eagles," on the grounds that previous logos had been disrespectful to Native Americans.

This is Daniel Snyder thumbing his nose at all his critics.

If they choose Warriors it will be interesting to see what mascot they come up with, as I doubt it will have any reference to native Americans.

Washington Politicians would be good - everyone would hate them.

or Washington DCs but then anyone that is AC would get offended.

Decades of resistance gave way to mere days of deliberation.

The Washington Redskins will announce Monday plans to change their team name, according to the Sports Business Journal. The consensus opinion within the NFL is change was inevitable as soon as owner Daniel Snyder budged and announced July 3 a “thorough review” of the name — a derogatory slur for Native Americans — was underway.

But this is even quicker than many expected — perhaps to assure time to adjust uniforms, logos and merchandise for the start of the 2020 season. The replacement name is not expected to be immediately revealed, the report said.

Calls to find a non-offensive name began decades ago, but Snyder, who purchased the team in 1999 that he rooted for as a child, dug in on the history of the organization and the idea that it honored Native American culture.

But when stadium title sponsor FedEx asked for a reconsideration and official uniform sponsor Nike pulled all merchandise from sale on its website, Snyder took a step toward change despite infamously saying only seven years ago that it would “never” happen.

If concluded — Yahoo Sports indicated Redskins executives began spreading word around the league late last week to drop the nickname from various platforms — the review lasted less than 10 days.

FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo had shareholders imploring them to cut advertising revenue to the Redskins without a name change. FedEx CEO Frederick Smith is a part-owner of the franchise.

Warriors is a popular replacement choice because Snyder once trademarked the name with intention to add an expansion franchise to the Arena Football League. It never came to fruition, and his rights elapsed.

Another popular choice and winner of a prize in a fan contest is RedTails, a reference to hero Tuskegee Airmen fighter pilots during a time before military segregation was outlawed.

But the option gaining steam appears to be Red Wolves, as star defensive lineman Jonathan Allen promoted it on a social media account. RedTails or Red Wolves would allow the franchise to keep its #HTTR hashtag and maybe minimize changes to the corresponding fight song “Hail to the Redskins.”

“So many great things could come out of that,” Allen said. “Call the stadium ‘The Den,’ get the ‘Wolfpack’ on D. I ain’t gonna lie, that would be hype, bro.”

Quarterback Dwayne Haskins is on board and former Redskins players including Fred Smoot and Will Compton are trying to rally support. Even Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant — a Maryland native and big fan of the football team — endorsed the change with some fire emojis on Instagram.

So what’s the hold-up?

Trademark issues are pending, according to the Sports Business Journal. There is rich irony there because Snyder spent untold sums waging a legal battle against the Justice Department to retain the Redskins trademark.

In 2017, the Supreme Court declared that a federal law banning trademarks interpreted as disparaging was a violation of the First Amendment. Loss of trademark protection would have cost a fortune in merchandise sales.

For a generation of sports fans in the nation’s capital, the change is reminiscent of when the NBA’s Washington Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards for the 1997-98 season, after team owner Abe Pollin’s friend, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, was killed by gunfire.

The three-time Super Bowl champion Redskins are cut from a different fabric, though. Arriving from Boston in 1937, they remain the heartbeat of sports in the city despite years of losing and inept leadership leading to empty seats and anti-Snyder chants.

MLB’s Cleveland Indians also are considering a change, while the Atlanta Braves are not.

snyder probably thinking about selling all that new merchandise, upping the value, cashing out?

Washington hits snag with the new NFL name they want

By Zach Braziller

July 13, 2020 | 11:22am

Daniel Snyder and the Washington football team know what it wants to rename itself after announcing it was retiring the Redskins moniker. It just can’t do so yet. The replacement is tied up in a trademark fight, The Washington Post reported.

The name change, announced by the team on Monday, came about after years of haggling and prodding. It wasn’t until sponsors, such as FedEx, Nike, Amazon and Target, pressured Snyder that it came to fruition. Now the question is what will be the name Washington will go by?

In recent weeks, trademarking guru Martin McCaulay applied for several potential names, Pro Football Talk reported. He applied for Redtails, Renegades, Monuments, Veterans and Red-Tailed Hawks. It’s uncertain if any of those are the one Snyder has zeroed in on. Reports last week indicated Warriors was the frontrunner.

A lot goes into a name change. It’s more than just what a team is called. Washington will have to change everything – from its logo to patents to trademarks to what appears on stationary, marketing materials, moving supplies and many other things. And it isn’t helping matters that there is a trademark battle being waged for the name Snyder wants his team to use.

I think they should hearken back to the old days of Washington D.C. sports and change the name to the Bullets

My half-joking suggestion was to keep the Redskins name and change the logo to a potato and get rid of the Native American imagery. Problem solved :)

"Trademark issues with the new name" signals to me that it's probably Warriors, as there are many iterations of that name around sports, but no pro/major college teams to my knowledge that use RedTails. Either way, change is long overdue, and the billion$$ at stake finally begrudgingly got Snyder to change his tune after fighting tooth and nail against it for years.

That would be offensive to

swing and a miss on that one lol

I didn't post that picture, I typed "that would be offensive to red-tailed hawks."

Mods - why are people editing my posts behind my back?

I did that as instead of the word red tail hawk it was a picture of the bird. Didn't think it was a big deal. If you want it deleted just ask.

Just trying to lighten the mood. Some of these threads have gotten pretty intense.

i was actually responding to your written out version. it was a swing and a miss. we get it, youre going overboard with this whole "where does it end" mindset. believe it or not things can be offensive and there is indeed a line. if you got the color of someones skin as your name, it can be considered offensive.

nobody is attacking anything else. hence the fact there are like 8 other teams actually named after a bird.

i actually thought the picture made it funny

So why is it a problem now? Why wasn't it a problem in any of the Washington Redskins' previous years of existence? This is my point. Things have gotten out of control with canceling and renaming everything.

People need to stop being offended by every little thing and just live their lives.

it was a problem LOL. its been in question since the 60s. that logic is bananaland. youre tailspinning lately. just because people woke up and did something about it now doesnt mean they shouldnt have years ago.

"why all of a sudden are we giving them reparations and casinos?? nobody cared about the indians 60 years ago!" - shu09 1980

"why are we outlawing slavery now? theyve been slaves since the 1700s!" shu09 1865

Comparing enslaving people to a team name that has conflicting studies about whether anyone beside a small minority of said group is actually offended is so 2020.

False equivalencies are a hallmark of the social justice warriors/radical left.

i wasnt comparing. thats a false accusation. i was giving shu09s sub zero take other applications. one of them was quite literally dealing with the same group at hand (which you omitted)

why is this a problem now? its heinous thinking. it was always bad, but like all things people finally wake up and make a change. thats whats happening here. its honestly not even that big of a deal.

It's sports related but understandably a touchy subject.

My lighten the mood comment was my posting a picture of a red tail hawk, which obviously did not come close to meeting its intended nuance.

im not even on that side. not everything should be cancelled. not everything should be free from scrutiny. the redskins should absolutely be scrutinized.

i actually altered my thinking around things like the virus and cancel culture based on what youve posted in the past but youre starting to lose it.

having a vocal stance around "nobody ever used to have a problem with it" is precisely the problem. sure, there are some things everyone wishes were like the good ol days. naming a team a skin color aint one of em.

Look up the history of it. Indian groups were complaining about it as far back as 1972 from what I can tell.

Ownership didn't agree it was offensive, so the name remained. I thought this would have been done years ago when people were debating it in 2013. Surprised it took this long honestly.

I'm still on it. Now, more than ever, is when we have to dig in to team reality when it comes to the virus and cancel culture. Those with sinister agendas are going for the throat and they're winning the PR war. Dangerous times.
