Neptune

"...zero tourney appearances in 3 years..." Using that thinking, does Shaheen have one more year to get us back to the tournament? Some will say "it's so different." It always is.
It is different. For starters, VU collective and leadership has stepped up with NIL, and expectations are higher. Next, the profile of the job and hence pool of candidates will dwarf what SHU will attract. If you think Odom would even give SHU a sniff, I have land south of Florida to sell you.

Neptune knew at the beginning of the season that he needed to make the NCAA to keep his job. He may be a Jay protege but his coaching acumen never has materialized in their view. When Jay stepped down, there were divergent views on which direction to go. Hire in the family or go outside and get the best available talent. Some would say they made a mistake because they could have attracted a top tier coach coming off Jay’s run. It is different.

Have to see improvement next year but SHU is so messed up on so many levels. Neptune had institutional support, a top 20 NIL, a generational player who was the nations leading scorer, and talent at every position. Neptune was just not ready yet after only a single year at Fordham.

Not sure why Nova would want Collins besides the point that he just seems like a Nova type of guy (which he isn’t). Odom is a good coach, but I think Nova would want to shoot higher. Moser would be interesting since he is a proven coach and should have enough $ to get the talent needed.

It will be interesting to see where Nova lands. But no doubt, their program just changed in a big way since I am assuming most of the Nova guys on the staff will be out.

Collins would be a huge mistake if they go with him.

Shaheen was working with inferior talent this past season. Yes, from a HS recruiting perspective we have some names who were 4 star players and in some cases still young and developing. But we were a woeful offensive team; not enough shooters/scorers. Not sure what Jenkins would have added had he been healthy and played in most of the games. Maybe a couple of more wins.

The irony is NWestern fans are acting like the world is ending if he leaves. Who knows if he will get the job but people have to understand the handcuffs he has at that school with players. It’s like trying to get players admitted to an Ivy school in a league where everyone else is getting the best talent. At Nova he’s able to recruit a much higher caliber of player that he can’t get admitted to Northwestern. Just food for thought. People were surprised he stayed there after the tourney appearances but it was bc his son was enrolled at the school. He just graduated.

Sha is not the problem. We know what the problem is.

I feel like Collins is a mistake. But I also don’t have a handle on how his performance should be gauged at a place like NW. it’s always been viewed, I think, as the hardest job in that league, probably by a lot. He’s only been to the tourney a few times in his lengthy tenure, but when he’s gone, he’s won a game each time which is a huge deal for that school.

BTW it “sounds like” Nova’s final 4 are Collins, Odom, Pitino Jr…and Kevin Willard.
Also if Odom leaves VCU — that place has become a total feeder ground for high major coaches who win there and move on. From Anthony Grant, to Shaka, to Wade, Rhoades and now Odom.

Right. And Odom is the hot name for both Nova and Virginia but like you said VCU is a feeder ground for big jobs. Would Odom take Northwestern to tournament wins with dogsh*t players? Fair question. I think there’s a reason Collins has been the only coach to ever win at all at Northwestern. The guy can coach. That job is downright miserable.

Yeah, I saw Willard touted on ESPN.com this morning. I can’t see him leaving Maryland for that one. It’s not a no-brainer, but he’s in a pretty good spot now. No juggernauts in the BigTen to compete against, whereas as Villanova, he’d have UConn and and ascendant St. John’s to overcome.

Sha is here for a very long time. Get used to it and get behind him. He’s no Mullin or Ewing.
I agree with the last sentence. The first, however, sounds like the traditional Seton Hall refrain we heard about Willard; even Gonzalez.
Another BE season of 4 or 5 wins and the ice thins considerably.

I really think you overestimate the academic expectations [for athletes, especially] of almost any college today. Kids don't have to take the SATs: meet high school grad requirements (four years of English.....) earn Cs and Bs in an inflated grading world where a B is birthright, and they're in.

You might be right. Gonzo was fired not for losing but for bringing embarrassment to the university. Who knows how long Willard could have stayed.

Sha is favorite son. Will get a long run imo.

Ah, the Gonzo Days. Ahead of the game with the transfers, lol.

What a guy. Drove people nuts with that paranoid frenetic personality which ultimately doomed him. He was a good basketball coach and recruiter that I thought we needed with the reconfigured Big East after firing Orr, but he combusted at The Hall. I remember Pat Hobbs calling him a, “mercurial talent.” To say the least.

I can’t see it. It looks like they want to reset and get away from the Wright tree.
Wright has no tree. Literally, no tree.

No way Nova hires anyone without significant head coaching experience.
Bring Nardi to the Rock as lead assistant.

that is absolutely a false data point. he actually does have a tree that goes back to when he was the head coach at hofstra.

the latest being the young coach at buffalo who just completed his 2nd season

Apparently Nardi thinks he has a shot. Willard’s benefits could not be matched at Nova
Nardi is delusional if he thinks that. He needs to go be a head coach. Good assistant but they used to joke that the staff all dressed like Jay, while Nardi dressed like a South Philly goomba….

Name all the great wright assistants killing it as head coaches?

imo bg was NOT a good coach while at shu.

and as i have been told and read here, derm was the good recruiter, as in getting hazell and glover - didnt bg try someting to get glover eligible that made it impossible to ever play here.

It’s not like they went 7-26. You simply need an experienced upgrade. I think the issue with Neptune is the inexperience at this level and how to get teams consistently in the zone. Esp in this day and age. Our guy struggles with this too. Same that we're seeing with English at Providence.

Gunna hit him up?

Collins was at Nova yesterday…back-up to Odom.

Fairfield interested in Nardi or Neptune.

It wouldn’t be wrong to fire Shaheen after a 7-25 season, but that doesn’t make it the right move either. I don’t get why people can’t understand the reason he gets a longer leash.
