Week 11 AP poll / Hall number 28

I was excited at the possibility but actually happy they didnt make it given the importance of this week ahead.
I would've preferred Sha be able to tell the recruits at the game we're in the top 25. Pitino and McDermott aren't stupid. They're having their teams focused on the first place pirates regardless if there's a number in front of our name or not.

I wasn't really concerned what the other teams . Sha seems like a great motivator but I was more concerned about the players letting off the gas a bit after hearing some good news. I also think its easier to motivate by saying how they got robbed instead of saying now teams will have a target on your back so you better play hard.

Losses per KenPom as of today (NET in parentheses)

@Baylor 14 (12)
@Xavier 33 (45)
n Iowa 47 (58)
n USC 74 (88)
vs Rutgers 94 (94)

No one in South Orange got hosed. There’s still too much ground to make up and too many other good teams out there.

The silliness in the process is seen with the two voters who had SHU 22 and 23 last week, but off their ballots this week. But that sort of stuff is common, which is why these things are just as debatable as the analytic-based rankings.

Curious- as our opponents' rankings fluctuate, do our previous Wins and Losses get re-weighted/re-calculated? ie- does Connecticut moving up to #1 help our NET -or- is it calculated against the NET at the time of the Win?

Interesting that SJU much higher than us in the Net but not getting the AP voters love.

Someone did a breakdown and most of the teams with more votes than us last week all had good weeks. We are not going to leap over those teams. We will have our time.

We’re probably a little too high considering our OOC. I‘ll take it though.

The polls have zero to do with the NET. UConn going to No. 1 means nothing unless their actual NET score improves with it.

NET scores are re-calculated daily with the previous day's game results included. You may not play but your ranking will rise or fall depending on what those around you do. Games are calculated at the time of play but things such as quad records change based on how teams move up and down the ranking over the course of the season.

For example, our Marquette win is Q1 because they are top 30 in the NET. If they fall below 30 that game is a Q2 win for us. The better example may be Providence since they are in danger of dropping out of the top 75. Again, a Q1 win would become a Q2 in that example.

So what ranking do you think we deserve and which teams should we jump?

You beat 3 ranked opponents and win multiple road games for weeks you tell me

Hosed
Give us the examples of teams who don't belong over us and why. Defend your position.

Clearly the poll voters on the whole don't think we belong as only 18 of 63 of included us on their ballot. One of those 45 is the guy who watches us play more than anybody.

There are a lot of teams who have beaten ranked opponents and win tough road games.

The only team in the poll with a worse record than ours is Marquette. They have beaten four ranked teams -- Illinois on the road, Kansas in Maui, Texas and Creighton.

No one.

Other teams play, win, and lose games. Not just the hall. If you think we were hosed, which specific teams ahead of us should be behind us?

I only watch our games, so I'm the last person to ask. You could accurately say I'm not paying attention, because I am not from the standpoint of assessing the entire college basketball landscape, which is what one needs to do to rank teams.

Ok, but others have won as well, granted some have also lost but who do you see above us that you feel should be below us? Others have to move down for us to move up. We crapped the bed earlier in the season and now we’re paying for it. You can’t lose to bad teams, especially at home. It doesn’t make it impossible to overcome, we still have time, but we do have more ground to make up.

Carino does what is right , which is not to show bias toward ur local team, but the West Coast writers (along with Big10 and ACC ) always help their teams out.

The voter with the most extreme bias (according to that site that shows how everyone votes and who has the most outliers) is based in Connecticut and favors east coast schools (including the hall)

Actually, looks like he doesn't necessarily favor the east coast. Just deviates a ton from the other pollsters. Including giving us our highest ranking, 15.

Thanks, Dave!

I'm sure writers not very familiar with our program we're influenced by our low net rating when compared to others they were thinking of voting for

YES Lloyd..each year in the preseaon rankings look at the number of ACC / Big Ten schools making up the ranking. Then compare those rankings mid way or at the end of the year. Each year the big name bias or big school bias prevails until they have to take them out. Furthermore , as previously posted , look at the Pac 12 voters compared to the east coast voters. All voters are people with a brain and spinal cord....the only difference (from a physiological point of view) is their bias toward their locations

That’s why you should follow national guys like Katz Rothstein etc on how they vote. And if you did you’d see SHU

Katz doesn't have a vote in the AP. Neither does Gary Parrish at CBS. But he doesn't have us in his top 25 and one. Said a lot of nice things about last Tuesday night. His and one is playing in Newark tomorrow though.

But how about Dick Vitale? Is he national? Or respected?

Kevin McNamara, the long respected writer from Providence?

They know the sport inside and out. We're tied for 26th on both of their ballots.
