And we should acknowledge that tech/high end chips/AI are now an integral part of our national defense/security. We can’t afford to outsource, ESPECIALLY to China.

It boggles my mind that, especially after COVID, we as a country did not on-shore more products and services out of China. Instead, we've continued to do the opposite. Insanity.

Indeed, I have been saying for years and why I thought the CHIPS act was important legislation.

Good that Trump is negotiating for more deals, and it was good that Biden got that bill done during his term.

The CHIPS Act was a good start.

And instead of demonizing Musk, has anyone done more for our national defense considering NASA has outsourced much of its work to SpaceX, that Starlink provides a strategic advantage for global communications, and that he has been a developer of AI and proponent of it being held in an industry cooperative for security purposes?

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!

I am not in favor of tariffs. I believe there are a number of examples in our history where tariffs have proven to be a net negative for the county. President Trump believes otherwise. He has stated on several occasions, most recently on March 2nd that “trade wars are good, and easy to win.”

It’s been over 90 years since the last serious trade war so the economy is significantly different. Perhaps the Administration has some new tactic that will improve the ultimate outcome to a net positive.

The issue isn’t just the tariffs; it’s the imposing of the tariffs followed by the postponing or reversing them the next day. It’s as if the President is work-shopping to see how this will play out on television. The stock market goes down; postpone the tariffs. The auto industry cries the foul; give them an exemption.

It’s not necessary. Conventional wisdom knows what the first reaction will be. If the Administration believes in tariffs, do it and I guess we’ll find out how it all turns out. President Trump was elected to be a strong leader but he is coming off as feckless and indecisive. After all, trade wars are good and easy to win.

Many countries impose tariffs on US goods. No one bats an eye to that. Now we are imposing tariffs back and people are upset. Why is it okay for countries like Canada to impose tariffs on us and not okay for us to impose tariffs on them?

Because tariffs are supposed to be strategic based on economic need.

Blanket tariffs with no eye on the impact the economy is a bad policy. If for example, importing lumber that was cheap from Canada ruined the lumber market in the US, then a tariff to help that balance where US lumber companies could still operate here, then you add a tariff. That's not what happens though. Lumber in colder climates grows stronger so it is a benefit for the US to be able to purchase that lumber as cheaply as possible as America would not be able to produce the same quantity / quality.

It has to be targeted and strategic to make any sense. Just like Canada does not have a blanket tariff on US goods, they only impose a tariff on goods that they need to be able to produce in their country so they don't lose jobs and industries.

It does not help us whatsoever to purchase lumber from Canada at a more expensive price.
Also, announcing tariffs and backing off a couple days later and then doing the same exact thing a month later is just absurd governance if we're being honest here.

I agree that blanket tariffs in general are not a good thing. I would imagine Trump is using the blank tariffs as a negotiating tool. Time will tell.

I'm not okay with other counties imposing tariffs on us and us just bending over and taking it. We have been doing this for years. They need to either drop their tariffs on our goods or we need to impose tariffs on theirs.

It's been two rounds of market disruption for no reason at all now. That is just absurd "leadership"

That is a message that is being sold to you, but that's just not true. The very few tariffs Canada imposed were only to protect their industries at risk and in line with the trade agreement we have with them.

The US, Canada & Mexico participate in the USMCA agreement, negotiated by President Trump's first administration. There is little evidence to suggest Canada or Mexico are not abiding by the agreement.

Based on the attached White house press release from February 1
  • President Trump is taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.
The President is using the tariffs as a tool to achieve other policy goals, specifically, border security.

Well, the stock market is taking a beating for two weeks all due to self inflicted wounds by Trump. The tariffs are going to send inflation back up and could very well cause a recession in this country when our economy was doing well. It’s one of the dumbest boneheaded policy decisions that any president has made. Well at least since 1929 under the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs.
