Where will it end?

Because this is infinitely more important than innocent black children getting shot and killed in the street every day...

I guess any housing development with the word "plantation" in it will also need to be changed too.

Yep and any golf course with the name plantation will also need to be changed. And the City of Plantation in Florida of course.

There is no end point in sight. Ask for what you want, watch people cave, then ask for more and watch the cycle repeat. This will go until we have 10 words left in the English language as long as the cycle repeats. The problem is silent majority is worried about much bigger things like education, safety, economics, etc and doesn't have the time to stand up to this bull. It's time someone forms a group that millions of people get around and tells our politicians we are not paying our taxes until you grow a pair.

Words, for the most part, are impersonal and objective. There are a few that have exclusively bad connotations but these words started out as slang or at least base or crude language. A word like "master" has over 20 definitions as a noun. More when the part of speech changes. A word loses its impersonal and objective status when the user make it personal and subjective. There is no objective basis to rename the golf tournament. There is no objective basis to associate the word with oppression or any inappropriate status with this usage. Perhaps if we as a society would really teach language and etymology in the schools, this feckless examination of words would never occur.

All of this is social justice warrior behavior 101.
Several years ago, I asked a Catholic priest why the Church opposed same-sex marriage, if it couldn't be forced to perform it. He said, "Who says we won't be forced to perform them? It's coming."
Would anyone be surprised if a NYC church burned tomorrow, because of the record on LGBT rights?

It's not about improving black lives, it's about getting white people to submit. Need proof, Don lemon says it himself.

They don't give a shit about the innocent black kids being murdered every day.

it means "masters of golf"

you cant just change everything that is a homophone to something that can tenuously be associstwd to slavery out of context

That was exactly what I asked myself; if the name was developed from a sense of "this tournament is special and reserved for only the Masters of golf"....then absolutely it should not be changed....if, however, given the history of the location....the years and years of racism and exclusionary rules....that continued WELL after civil rights movements...etc., it was named to "honor" the Masters of the slaves at the plantation....then that is a problem.

To me it is not much words...many words can convey different meanings, so it is not about banning words...that would be beyond ridiculous (ie even "redskin" can, and should be used to describe the apt potato)..it is about what was the intent of the use of a said word in the context within which it is being judged.

And no...I am a golfer, and a HUGE golf fan...so no negative golf bias here.

Just a thought

There might be. what was in the Board minutes when the name change was made? articles of incorporation? By-Laws? other historical documents? News stories? if none referred to "master of slaves", and especially if they all refer to "masters of golf/their profession"....then I absolutely agree, no change should be made

It was named for marketing purposes to indicate "masters of golf" and differentiate them from the US Open. https://www.liveabout.com/original-name-of-the-masters-tournament-1564628

It has nothing to do with a slave owner. In fact the word plantation was originally meant to indicate a place where settlers went during colonization to establish a permanent base around farming.

None of this will get a person of color a job, more respect etc. Some phrases are obvious and disrespectful but this is ridiculous and the eraser culture that is happening is way overboard.

The BET founder said it himself. How about focusing on the hiring and education of minorities instead of every little word that can be taken the wrong way or destroying statues. Our culture is so out of control. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...rs-pulling-statues-borderline-anarchists.html

Every golfer knows it's the Masters as in masters of the game of golf. The problem is you're going to have people who couldn't care less about golf demanding this because that's what the mob mentality does.

my father works in the govt as a civilian for the navy and he had to deal with a case where a woman accused him of being racist because they were having a company "picnic"... the word picnic was under scrutiny.

meanwhile

‘Picnic’ began life as a 17th-century French word: it wasn’t even close to being an American invention. A 1692 edition of Origines de la Langue Françoise de Ménage mentions ‘piquenique’ as being of recent origin and marks the first appearance of the word in print. As for how the French came by this new term, it was likely invented by joining the common form of the verb ‘piquer’ (meaning “to pick” or “peck”) with ‘nique,’ possibly either a Germanic term meaning “worthless thing” or merely a nonsense rhyming syllable coined to fit the first half of this new palate-pleaser.

The first documented appearance of the term outside the French language occurred in 1748, but picnic was rarely used in English prior to 1800 or thereabouts. Even then, the word still wasn’t being used in America (but rather in England) and referred to a fashionable pot-luck social affair that was not necessarily held out-of-doors.'

the world is under fire by people who are looking to find issues where there arent any

There's really nothing new in this stupidity. 30 or so years ago a white member of the DC Council used the term niggardly during a budget debate. The black members complained, of course, and demanded an apology. It was explained to them that there was no racial connotation to the word. Nevertheless, they passed a resolution prohibiting the use of the term niggardly in any council meeting. It probably is still in effect today.

Using the N word is always wrong and unquestionable IMO. A lot of this other stuff is just silly.

I had a hostess at a Boston restaurant last year get upset because I pointed to my wife and said I'm sitting with her. She corrected me and said they don't use those gender specific terms anymore? I told her that was her choice and she didn't like it. I should have talked to the restaurant owner to tell them the girl was very abrasive but I did not. The world has gone batshit crazy and people are way too sensitive instead of looking at peoples intent and how they treat others. Actions are always more powerful than words but not in a twitter-driven society.

Which restaurant? I’d rather not subject myself to that situation.

I wish I could remember. It was a restaurant in an around the Comm Ave area not too far from BU. Last time I will go there.
Ok I generally am either by the Harbor and the North End or the Back Bay section between the Prudential Center and Northeastern. So many good restaurants I don't need to deal with that crap if I don't have to.

All employees of Master carpenters and plumbers will require their employers and or bosses change their titles. And what about Master Gardeners? Up here in Bergen County they cannot even use cowboys and indians as team nicknames or mascots.

The sports teams at Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills high schools will no longer be named the Indians and Cowboys. During Monday night's virtual meeting, the Pascack Valley Regional High School District Board of Education voted unanimously to remove both nicknames and logos.Jun 22, 2020.

When will it end is right.

Yes it is sad. Both schools should go by the nickname The Pussies.

Rob Parker Is a Race Baiting Hypocrite

Branded Sports June 23, 2020 1

Deadspin is a joke. They have no money and are virtually, no pun intended, dead. All of their ‘writers’ walked out last year because the guy that bought the company decided he wanted to actually make money. How ruuuuddde!!?!? Since that the site went quiet for a bit but now seems to be back on their bull shit. And by that I mean writing nonsense articles trying to be super ‘edgy’ and ‘cool.’ The latest attempt was made by Rob Parker.

In a recent Deadspin article, Parker is demanding that the Masters change it’s name back to The Augusta National Invitational. His reasoning behind it you ask? Well I’ll let it speak for itself.

Deadspin: “Tiger Woods, other big-time golfers and corporate sponsorship's should demand it. In the current climate, with all the sweeping changes, it’s only right and just. Best of all, in this case, it’s a simple and smooth fix.

The Masters never felt good or even sounded good when you said it.

And be honest. When you hear anyone say the Masters, you think of slave masters in the South. There’s nothing else, nothing special. You don’t think of someone mastering the game of golf. When has anyone mastered golf?”

Actually Robbie, when I hear ‘The Masters,’ I think of The Masters. A golf tournament with the best of the best. Maybe because I’m not racist or maybe because I’m not the type of person always looking for an issue to be upset about. And to answer your question, when has anyone mastered golf?

Tiger Woods.

He has mastered golf. Which actually brings me to my next point. Why are we taking race relationship advice from Rob Parker? Correct me if I’m wrong, (spoiler alert, I’m not) isn’t Rob Parker the same guy that got fired from ESPN for calling Robert Griffin III and TIGER WOODS, ‘cornball brothers.”

Who the @#$% does Rob Parker think he is to tell people what is and isn’t racist? He doesn’t see an issue with telling people ‘you’re not black enough.’ Seems a little, oh what’s the word??? Oh that’s right, RACIST. Parker is a complete hypocrite and the fact that he is using race to try and drive clicks is nothing short of pathetic.

You want to be a man of your word Rob? Give back your master’s degree.

You hate the word Master’s so much and yet you highlight it on your twitter bio???? That seems a little weird. Give back your degree Parker. Actually, while we’re at it, I demand that you denounce Columbia Journalism school all together. Right out front of the school they have this huge statue of Thomas Jefferson.

tj.jpg

And what you may or may not know Robert, Thomas Jefferson owned over 700 slaves.

So to recap: Rob Parker. The man that once went on ESPN, said Tiger Woods and RGIII weren’t real black people. Ya know, like a racist would. The same guy that flaunts his masters degree from a school that proudly boast a statue* of a man that had hundreds of slaves on his Twitter bio. That guy, is demanding that The Masters change their name.

It’s such a wild take you almost have to respect it. Just feel bad to see an amazing publication hurt like this…..I mean the Onion. Sad to see the Onion get beat at their own game.

PS: Here’s the final putt and celebration of last year’s masters. Won by the greatest golfer to ever play the game and who happens to be black. Boy does he look upset.

* Which by the way, statues don’t bother me, take them down, leave them up. Doesn’t matter to me, it’s the fact that Parker is such a hypocrite you can’t not mention it.
