Many similarities between the two lead-ins and outcomes:

Seton Hall loss to Western Kentucky in 1993 or St. John’s vs Arkansas in 2025?

First off western Kentucky was a 7 seed that should have been a 5 seed since they were ranked in top 20.
So st johns is worse on paper.
That being said that hall team was better than this st johns team so I'll say our loss was worse

We also had 2 first round NBA picks on our team and for my money the best player we’ve ever had.

WKY was not your normal mid major, but they don’t have anywhere near the talent that is on Arkansas even without Thiero.

One other factor too. We were in vastly difference places as programs.

We weren’t far removed from making a final and the year before went to the Elite 8 with all kinds of talent returning. In many ways 89-93/94 was the peak of our program.

They’ve been a mess for 20+ years and finally broke through in a huge way with all the wins, titles, etc.

Sets up a year of "let's see if they can win in March" . Not a great place to be because this loss wipes away some of the Pitino Magic that fueled this season.

I live that every year now as a Yankee fan. Can they finally win a WS, since it’s been 16 years? Part of the territory when you are a good team. Beats being awful though like they were when I was younger.

Also, the Pitino Magic already happened. He took a place that was a mess for two decades plus and just won the most games they ever have, won titles they haven’t won in decades, and with enormous exposure. Selling out MSG consistently - real ones, not fakes where half the building isn’t open so it can be called a “sell out”.

If it was Seton Hall, we would be on cloud nine for the future irrespective of the bad tourney loss.

True, but I just don’t think the college basketball world will hang on everything Pitino says and doesn't next year. If SetonHall had a performance like that ( I know it would be great to be in that spot) this board would be apoplectic no matter of the coach was PJ, Sha, Willard or anyone else.

Well most are apoplectic after every loss :). TCU was a long time ago but yes you are right it wasn’t pretty around here after that one. Probably a good thing we didn’t have a board in 1993 - I was much younger and foolish then and prone to overreaction. I can’t imagine the idiocy that would have come out of my mouth.

We watched those guys for go to the elite 8 and sweet 16 and were expecting big things in 93. This SJU group hasn’t been together long. Making our loss more painful.
Agreed, especially since ‘93 was supposed to be the culmination of those prior years, the great senior class realizing their potential.

It was really the end of everything, as it turned out.

WKY was a nightmare match-up for us. Our first-round draft choice (Luther) couldn't stay on the court with them: an ill omen for his very short-lived NBA career. PJ seemed unprepared.

Arkansas should have been higher than a 10.
