I've been saying SH needs to be scouting Europe for about 2 years now. The Grad-Transfer & the 5th Covid Year have taught coaches that having older and more experienced players is a huge advantage. Bringing in 20-21 year old Europeans with Pro experience and 4 years of eligibility is the new area of the market to exploit. Like everything else, Seton Hall will realize this and get involved about 5-6 years too late.

You and me both dude. I mean how can the staff not leverage a guy like Arturas who undoubtedly has contacts in Europe. Pitino supposedly flew out to Italy to watch a kid play. A school like Seton Hall should be all in on finding European guys.

And the UCONN addition is interesting, thanks for the info behind that. Sure, NIL makes things difficult - how many other business industries are difficult though and the innovators find a way to succeed? Don't tell me it can't be done.

You want the school to spend money scouting in Europe , Africa and Asia?!! lol

With today's tech you don't have to spend much money. Just use Chatgpt or any AI software to find you a center or power forward that is available to play in the US and meets your requirements. Within seconds you will get a list of names, stats, Bio and contact info.

You don’t think Godswill is better than Payne???
The statement was Godswill is much better than Payne. I don't think that's true, I think they are very similar type players. Right now it looks like they may split the 40 minutes at the 5.

I don't know enough about Payne other than highlight snippets and looking at analytics. But it looks like he and Godswill are the same type of player.

They are rim-runners. Limited offensively to offensive rebounds and getting set up for rim finishes. Payne listed as 6'9" 220 pounds, Godswill listed as 6'9" 214 pounds. Payne is much better statistically, obviously at a much lower level in the Atlantic Sun. I'd say Payne is better offensively, slightly better rebounding and defense is a push. Godswill has a much better chance to improve as a 2nd year player than Payne moving up a level as a Senior.

Offense
- Payne is better in nearly all offensive categories.
- Payne 106.6 O-Rating, 18.3% Shots. Per 40 minutes averaged 15.8 pts - 11.9 rebounds
- Godswill 93.8 O-Rating, 11.7% Shots. Per 40 minutes averaged 7.9 pts - 8.1 rebounds
- SH Team O-Rating was 88.7 with Godswill on floor, 99.8 with him off the floor (-11.1)
- Jax Team O-Rating was 107.0 with Payne on floor, 105.6 with him off floor (+1.4)
- Both take a lot of their shots at the Rim. Godswill 75%, Payne 67%
- Both have no Offense beyond the RIm. Godswill shot 29.4% from the Field beyond 4 feet from the Rim, Payne was a bit better at 38%.
- Payne is good in transition and very good at putbacks. Also draws a good amount of fouls and had a high And1 rate. He misses far too many layups for a big (51.7 FG%) So does Godswill (48.8%)
- Payne is a much better FT shooter - 63% over 92 career games. Godswill shot 30.2%!!

Rebounding
-
Payne is a better rebounder by all metrics. He's especially active on the offensive glass ranking 32nd in Nation
- Godswill 9.6% offensive rebs, 16.1% defensive - 8.1 per 40 minutes
- Payne 14.2% offensive rebs, 18.8% defensive - 11.9 per 40 minutes
- Seton Hall had better Team rebounding with Godswill on the bench (-6.0%)
- Jax Team rebounding was much stronger with Payne on the floor (+6.0%)

Defense
- Similar defensive stats except Payne gets a lot more steals
- Payne 4.8% Blk, 3.1% Steals. 3.8 Blocks + Steals per 40 minutes. 0.6 DBPM
- Godswill 5.0% Blk, 0.5% Steals. 1.8 Blocks + Steals per 40 minutes. 0.4 DBPM
- Our Team D-Rating was 1.2 better with Godswill on floor.
- Jax Team D-Rating was 1.1 better with Payne on floor

Isn't Payne a PF? Otherwise, agreed at this stage. But Payne is also entering his 4th season of D1 ball. What we have to hope is Erheriene's upswing leaves Payne in the dust.

I think Godswill will be better than Payne next season. And that Payne will be better than the bigs we were running out there last year.

If Payne’s a 4 and Goodswill’s a 5, then we would prob need 2 backups at both posistions, maybe we could make a splash purchase for a combo 4/5 and just rotate the 3 of them. Once again as folks have repeatedly point out not many bigs available at this point. D

Baba to Cincinnati.

And Payne is no starter at the 4.

Payne has decent back to basket moves. Seems to have a legitimate jump hook with either hand.

Saw one clip where he caught a ball on the break at his ankles in a full sprint and passed to the corner all in one motion for a wide open 3. Very athletic, smart basketball play.

Clinging to any hope for this roster and season.

The transfer portal is pretty barren of PFs and Bigs. There are about 30 players left who were in the Top 750 of all transfers. Of those 30, Darrion Williams is likely to remain in the NBA draft and roughly 19 who are out of eligibility but applying for waivers.

Here is the list. Players listed as PF or C with their ranking and predicted Player Rating for next year. We were once involved with Justin McBride & Macaleab Rich. Maybe we bring Jonnivius Smith back if he gets his waiver? Considering many of the players listed as Seniors won't be eligible, pretty slim pickings. Need to find a European!!

Get one of 352 and 372 as back up or starting big…if they get an extra year.

It won’t solve our PF issue but if we get prince back or somehow Payne can develop skills a PF, we can be better on defense. Either way offense suffers tho.

Are there any skilled international PFs that are big and can shoot 3s like mamu still out there🤣?

Payne's a tweener. Technically he could play either but he doesn't have the skill to play PF and a little undersized for a 5. But he played as a 5 at Jacksonville. Just watched their full game vs Virginia Tech, they actually upset VT on the road convincingly by 10 points. Payne took the opening jump, guarded VT's 5 and played offense as a 5. Jacksonville had another kid who was 6'9 230 but he played more as a 4 when they played together.

Jacksonville's coach played a lot of different defenses. Started in the 2-3 with Payne in the middle. When they pressed the other 6'9 kid guarded the inbounder and Payne was the back man guarding the rim.

From watching the game, Payne's ability to move his feet and sprint up the court were good. This bodes well for him being to be able to play the ball hedge defense and recover that Sha likes from his Bigs. His ball skills and hands were not good. Don't expect him to beat anyone off the dribble or to hit a jump shot. His offensive game is all from 6 feet in. He plays decent team offense, knows where to be on the floor, set decent picks, etc. One thing I liked is offensively when a guard on his team drove, Payne knew how to screen the big covering him from helping on defense to give his guard a clean look at the basket. He did this several times. Overall he seems decently coached and he'll be ok playing his role.

In this game he played 23 minutes, was 3-4 from field with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals & 1 block. Made some good defensive plays but he also had 6 Turnovers. Some were a result of dropping the ball, others were him being physically pushed around and losing his balance. VT's big was 6'9" 260 and strong.

To me he's a part-time role-playing big who can hopefully give solid minutes.

Sounds like Prince Aligbe.

Great info as always, @Fishjam!
