Willard

Of course he is, that's only going to drive up his price at MD. Strike while the iron is hot.
here is the issue with that much like most other industries of this nature...the compensation outweighs the quality of the output. if he were ever to win a national title he should be the highest aav coach in the sport.

I buy it. if willard doesn’t get to the S16 this year he’s about to be on the Turgeon hot seat. Has to compete with football for NIL at MD moving forward. Nova would give him everything he’s looking for. It’s a top 15 job in college basketball

in his press conf yesterday he welcomed the idea of the conf having west coast expansion
PR after the question posed to him was about him complaining earlier in the season, which he did.

His AD also jumped in on him earlier in the season when he complained.

Willard loves the BE and its geographic area. I think he’d love to be back and Nova is a great opportunity with deep pockets and the ability to compete with NIL. Not saying they want him.

Agree he could be in the same boat as Turgeon very soon. 3 last second losses this year arguably could be blamed on coaching. They were trending to the 3 seed yesterday. Their fan base will not accept an NCAA round of 32 again.

If a fan base is going to hold 3 last second losses over getting better and fishing the year 12-3 in the last 15 beating multiple ranked teams, taking MSU to the wire, they'll end up setting themselves back. How many last second losses did Izzo have this year. When you're good you usually don't get blown and lose to other good teams usually those games come down the final minute and whoever loses, the coaches get blamed in those games.

As noted ted above, no P4 coach is opting to go to a non P4 school. Stop with this ridiculousness.
It all comes down to money and ability to win big. Schools like Georgetown and Villanova if they decide to go all in, they could definitely steal from P4 conferences and win national titles. Their alums are wealthy. Nova just got done paying Wright something like 6.5 mil a year. They could definitely buy Willard if they wanted. Do they want to? Doubt it right now. Maybe 1 more bad year and it might be appealing. I don’t see it happening but definitely not because they can’t steal a P4 coach

With the uncertainty in college sports and the next realignment coming up in 2031, no P4 coach is leaving the security of a P4 job. Now if someone gets fired, that’s different.

Really? because Chris collins is the other main candidate coming from a school that just put 850 million into a new football stadium

6 years is a long time. Anyone who kicks ass at a school like Nova will easily get a top tier job in 2031. It's not like all P4 teams will be riding high in 2031. What security is there in having a P4 job in 2025 for 2031?

The entire $850 million for the stadium is privately funded, no money from the school towards the stadium construction.

Collins was at Duke for so long (after being at Seton Hall with Amaker) that I don't think he forgot how to put together a power conference team. And Northwestern is noman's land; he got them to their only 3 NCAAT appearances in history and won a game in the Tournament each time.

Odom would be my first pick for them but I could see Collins as a fallback.

Between looking for a raise and taking his team bowling ..I doubt they make it to the sweet 16.
By many measures this the best team he's coached. At least on par with 2019-20 Seton Hall. Maryland is 25-8 and went 14-6 in the Big Ten, finished in 2nd. Their last 4 losses were buzzer beaters. They're real good. Non-Big Ten teams dealing with them in a tournament setting is going to be a huge challenge (I also thought our 2019-20 SHU team would benefit from being out of BE play with the personnel we had: teams not used to Gill/Ike, Mamu, Powell, McKnight + Cale defensively, etc.).

They're 13th in KenPom. They're 6th in DE, 28th in OE. They shoot the 3 well but don't rely on it. Queen and Reese are tremendous up front and Gillespie and Rice are the same on the perimeter. I think they're undervalued. Gotta see where they end up and the match-ups, of course, but there's going to be disappointment down there and rightly so if they're out early.

Few if any P4 coach is leaving for Nova other than a coach who gets canned. Collins maybe since their football is lousy. He’s a good coach but tough to win there. But whatever happens with realignment you’d rather be a hoops coach in the B1G than the BE. And I love the BE. Just the way it is.

Totally agree. And of course people forget the close ones that Willard won.. the Indiana game on the road comes to mind when he set up an out of bounds play with about 10 seconds left and Maryland wins it at the buzzer. These things cut both ways.

Agreed but Willard will be 55 by then. If he keeps getting big pay days and there's no sign of order in the college basketball world, get a big pay day and get out at realignment.
