Willard

Probably tried to keep it I the Nova family. 3 years like that over there and the standard says you gotta go. We have 3 bad years and it’s well the previous guy got a 6th year. The standard hasn’t moved up in 15 years
They have the money to pay the buyout, raise NIL funds, and pay a new coach. SHU doesn't.

I don't think that's the only reason and agree with you that Sha has a longer leash here than he's probably earned, but Nova can make decisions without factoring in money and SHU can't.

Nova wouldn’t have extended their coach off of an NIT title.

many here tell me SMU is money central...their athletics program has been largely irrelevant since the death penalty. football has one aac title and I think two shares in cusa for division.

And Sha owns SHU people. Look at his contract and renewal. Resistance is futile it seems which is why I’m concerned moving forward.

Willard’s had 8/10 NCAAT years in the BE/B10. He’s a good coach. I’d like to see how that compares to other P5 coaches.

It’s known Willard and his family really miss New Jersey. Maybe going to Nova gets him a little closer to NJ and back in the Big East.

Didn’t King Jay promote Neptune? Swing and a miss. Willard has now proven successful at two destinations. He would be a good hire by anybody and obviously Jay sees it that way too. This board can’t get enough of Willard’s NCAA Tournament shortcomings. I hope this is the year he quiets everyone down and makes it to a S16 and beyond. Maybe he wants to come back to The Hall to show Sha how it’s done!
He's knows how to do it when he's completely handcuffed by lack of institutional support? This is laughable.

You think Willard would be in the same position as Sha if he were still here? Now that’s laughable. One knows how to play the game. The other is still trying to figure out how to tie his shoes.

What? Willard is one of the reasons Seton Hall started so late to the P4P game. That's common knowledge.

Tired of your agenda. Did Sha steal your girlfriend or something?

Referenced how bad their nil was pretty quick

I’ve said this soo many times..and the same few come at me hard…everyone complains about their NIL..legit or not
NIL is the #1 thing to request for their programs. For years it was facilities and assistant coach money. Those were seen as the publicly accepted ways to ask for help in recruiting. NIL quickly replaces those things since the day it was made.

So it’s Willard’s fault that Sha STILL doesn’t have NIL money? Ok salt pepper ketchup.

They just made the College football playoff. That’s relevant

Exactly but I do think we'd be further along with him. Willard saw the game different. He stayed old before everyone else decided to stay old. I don't know if he had a different plan for this but he continuously proved everyone wrong. Everyone just kept waiting for Seton Hall to fall and it never really happened. Just a guess he would've found a way

I saw a comment the other day from a Providence fan that said he thinks Kim English wants to be a college basketball head coach, but he’s not sure if English wants to do it at Providence.

That’s the feeling I always had about Willard and Seton Hall, and now maybe Maryland as well.

Agreed on Willard and Kim. Kim took the job thinking after 3 seasons he’d be in the SEC

Yeah, pretty similar, I'm sure. I think Holloway is a little better recruiter (in an equal situation, that is), and though they are different in many stylistic ways, they are similar levels of coaches to me. The one thing I'll maintain is that Holloway's intensity is the thing that will let him drive a tournament team further than Willard has shown the ability to do. (Interestingly, perhaps, I have Maryland going to the Sweet Sixteen this year; the path seems manageable.)

But no, I don't think with the same budgetary restrictions that we'd be any better this year with Willard instead of Sha. The one caveat to that is the possibility that Willard would've allocated his paltry budget differently this year, building a top-heavy roster instead of trying to go ten deep. To his credit, Sha has admitted that tactic failed (which is as plainly obvious as could be).

Reading the preseason stuff here after the BE coaches poll was announced, Beef Steak, etc….

Hope Sha and the rest of the staff have learned a hard lesson on the player evaluation front.

Willard doesn't like hot dogs.
Ahh... The Grey Poupon Midnight Madness Night where Willard "competed" in the inaugural New Big East kickoff night where all , then 10 teams, midnight madness events were televised on FS1. Willard participated, with Bozella and former Seton Hall stars against then Japanese Coney Island king.

Willard sipped a cab, while cutting up a single dog with fork and knife, while all the competitors downed dogs competively.

It was very funny watching inside Walsh, but typical of Willard not to be one of the boys.

Willard should be thanking SHU every day for not firing him after that 1st round blow-out to Marquette in the BE tournament.
I highly doubt that he would have been in consideration for any other high-major coaching positions if he had been fired.
He wouldn’t have been. It shows the value of patience.

And SHU should be thanking Willard for the job he did, because other than the decision to keep Willard what other good decisions did they make the past 2 decades?

Sha pretty much admitted they weren't doing much evaluation in the Portal. Which is why I keep beating the dead horse that we need a GM or a scout in a non-coaching position that does year-round scouting. We should have a Big Board that rates every player with remaining eligibility and not try to make an evaluation on the fly once someone enters the portal.

Here was Sha's quote regarding what he learned from recruiting the portal and what he'll do differently,

"But I think it’s also important that you get the right people, not just names, and not just look at numbers and say, ‘okay, he averaged X amount of points at this place, I think he could average X amount of points here.’ You really gotta do your research and you gotta take some chances and trust your gut. I think all that kind of plays into it.”

Isn't part of Sha's job? Incredible with his Coaching staff that one is not assigned to form a list and let Sha do his "research" from that. Sha should have learned that he needs to delegate --its always some excuse.

Please tell this is just coach speak and not actually how we went about recruiting?

Judging from the horrific basketball and lack of anything, I think he’s describing how he put the team together. Scary.

Hear you and agree. But there was stuff like “Sha worked Toumi out and couldn’t believe what he saw” (in a good way, hence the Baby Mamu stuff) or “Sha thinks based on summer workouts and practice this team will be better than last year” etc
