WNBA, NY Liberty players leave court during national anthem

The New York Liberty and Seattle Storm made a statement before tipping off the WNBA season on Saturday.

Both teams left the court during the national anthem as a sign of peaceful protest and held a 26-second moment of silence for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old black woman who was killed at her home by Louisville police. Each player also had Taylor’s name on the back of their jerseys.

“We are dedicating this season to Breonna Taylor, an outstanding EMT who was murdered over 130 days ago in her home,” Liberty player Layshia Clarendon announced at mid-court, alongside Storm star Breanna Stewart, before the opening tip-off at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. “Breonna Taylor was dedicated and committed to uplifting everyone around here. We are also dedicating this season to ‘Say Her Name” campaign, a campaign committed to saying the names and fighting for justice of black women – black women are so often forgotten in this fight for justice, who don’t have people marching in the streets for them. We will say her name. Sandra Bland. Atatiana Jefferson. Dominique Remy Fells. Breonna Taylor. We will be a voice for the voiceless.”

The Liberty donated $25,000 to the African American Policy Forum and the #SayHerName campaign.

The players’ decision to leave during the national anthem comes on the heels of many MLB players — including the Yankees — kneeling before the anthem in recent days.

What I want is respect and I have posted that in the past.

Personally, I would never kneel to in any way disparage the National Anthem. But with that said I have also noted I would respect the individual rights of each athlete to kneel in a proper manner if they chose to.

But walking off the court as the Anthem is being played is too much. Any team that does that would close the door on my fandom for that franchise. And yes, that would include Seton Hall if it ever came to that.

Would you rather they kneel and feign paying attention to the anthem? Legit question. I'm not trying to start trouble
I would rather they pay respect to our country and our National Anthem, everything it stands for and those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country! I would rather they not act like the overpaid, spoiled brats that they are. I would rather they protest whatever is bothering them on their time not when they are working. I’d rather they leave our country if they are that miserable and move somewhere else that better aligns with their beliefs. That’s what I’d rather!

“Everything it stands for” is right in the song: ‘the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air’ as our country violently rebelled against oppression it saw as intolerable, and ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave’ where freedom from oppression and the kind of unfair treatment they received at the hands of England was paramount.

You’re asking them to move to a country that better aligns with what, exactly? Open, visible, obstructive protest of an injustice? That’s how America was born and bred, and that reality is one of the greatest gifts of America to the world.

Also, their great great grandparents didn’t ask to be packed into ships and brought to America. Of all the ‘go to your own country’-adjacent takes out there, picking African Americans as the target is 2nd only in ridiculousness to picking Native Americans

Their great-great-grandparents might have suffered but they sure have benefited from being in this country, just as the rest of us have benefited because at some point our forebears reached these shores, the main difference being most of us appreciate being American citizens

I'm not going to fall into the trap of thinking kneeling during the anthem is better than walking off. That's just boiling the Frog a degree at a time. Did they return to the court? Who cares? No one knows any of them by name anyway and few care whether they win or lose aside from their friends.

Screaming for attention. In a league where half the teams can’t even draw 6,000 fans.

Disgraceful, and ladies, your product stinks anyway.

I would like to know why HallDan took down my reply to Cern and Cern's post. I know the answer, one was too aggresive and it surely was not my reply.

A lot of young black females, and empathetic Caucasian females. I am sure many feel a certain way about Breonna Taylor. Hall85 stance if you make a point it is really only a scream for attention.

There was a homophobic slur that I deleted that you responded to, Neither comment will be allowed on this board. And BTW the deletion had nothing to do with any post from Cern.

Let this go. The subject does not belong on this board.

The deletion was more because of the post you refered to than yours. That forced me to delete each.

Hope the league folds. Eventually owners will get tired of throwing their money away.
Wonder where Geno stands on this.

Thing is a lot of pro sports are turning off large numbers of their fan bases. During this sports-free lockdown people have already found other things to do besides sports. This makes it even easier for people to shut them out now.

Wow we have people here that feel women shouldn't have pro sports leagues. Guess they should get back in the kitchen and learn to cook your dinner.

Why should there be a pro sports league if there is no appeal for it? You are a big fan of everyone gets a trophy generation I guess. WNBA is a joke.

I presume you dont watch womens college hoops either. For the most part the best college domestic players are in the league. You don't know me and I am not a participation trophy advocate.
Very good all time greats have played WNBA. No dunks and not as fast or athletic as men's hoops but those that are great at fundamentals are just as skilled as the men.

C'mon man, the best WNBA team would be smoked by the best boys basketball teams in NJ. They wouldn't stay within 100 of the worst Nba team. If you like watching shitty basketball with in your face political statements then by all means the WNBA is a must watch.

Ultimately, money talks. Stop watching. Stop going, and stop buying. Watch how good everyone’s posture becomes.
