WNBA, NY Liberty players leave court during national anthem

Come on man, ESPN is the lead national broadcaster of the league, Sabrina debut plus other games of course SportsCenter showed/shows highlights
I don't watch ESPN, but that would make sense that they would be promoting the league to boost ratings. Really, though, their ratings have been horrible...check Nielsen's, but I can see they are desperately trying to lead with a few star players. The virus is certainly not going to help them.

I don’t watch ESPN you woke, snowflake, lefty....Yada yada

This is better than walking off as the anthem is being played but still disrespectful.

How did ESPN get this so wrong?

Why do they play the National Anthem when there aren't any fans? I'm all for it when there are fans but without?

Why do these same players take American currency in their paychecks if they are so against America?

The last part of this post is absurd. Part of being American is the ability to disagree and speak your beliefs no? Again with the usual get of the country bs.

I think many of you are full of bologna, when our players knell you will still watch and you will come here to complain about it.

I hope our players would never be that disrespectful. If they are how many fans will walk out? If they stay for that particular game will they return for any others?

Gonna be tough for the righteous crew without sports cause it’s happening. Every league etc.

Hope you guys aren’t watching baseball!!!

I know this post/topic has been beaten nearly to death, but....

Not sure what kneeling in a "proper manner" means? Will leagues establish guidelines? (That's sarcastic!)
Would it have been [that much] better had the players marched off before the Anthem started?
Kneeling at a prescribed time and kneeling during the Anthem are two completely different issues or actions: night and day.

And beating up on women's basketball is beneath even this board.
Look how many gush over our mediocre women's team and its coach. Not a fan of the WNBA, and part of that is the time of the year, but as big a fan of the college game as I am, to watch the UCONN women v. ND, Stanford, or South Carolina rather than men's DePaul v. G'town or even Providence - St. John's is a no brainer.

I’m involved with several charitable organizations and at one of our Christmas parties, we invite the kids and staff from Harbor House where Santa comes out and hands each of the kids a $200 gift card.

Unfortunately 9 years ago one of the boys remained seated at the beginning for “God bless America” and the Pledge of Allegiance which starts all our meetings. And you can say I saw the passion people gave for this subject.

Personally I felt that a 12 year old boy who lives in a group home because his real home is not safe, and undoubtedly had little support with school or moral values, should not be held accountable for what he did. But at least half of our organization wanted the boy to appear at one of our meetings to apologize to our 100+ members and if he didn’t, they wanted to cut all donations to that organization.

One thing I noticed when SHU team went to Pearl Harbor, was they all stood with their hands to their heart for the rest of that year. Hopefully this years team can show the same respect.

Screaming for attention. In a league where half the teams can’t even draw 6,000 fans.

Disgraceful, and ladies, your product stinks anyway.

Pure PR stunt. And let them compare woman’s rights here compared to the rest of the world, athletics or otherwise.

Not absurd at all.

When you chose to disrespect the National Anthem, you are choosing to disrespect the nation. The nation that you gladly accept its currency. Can't be too upset then, can you? Makes it seem more like a "Hey, look at me" moment, not a sacrifice of any sorts.

Part of being American IS the ability to disagree and speak your beliefs. And part of being American is the ability for others to react to your speech and actions. You don't get carte blanche to be untouchable. The American way is not listen to what I say and do and then shut up about it if you disagree, no?

Another one implying this group, now women have it or have been treated "good enough" by now....european league women's hoops actually pays better than wnba which is why many wnba players in normal circumstances play overseas and then come back and play a wnba season...while their may be exceptions of some regions or countries stuck in ancient times with their view of women, and while work still needs to be done everywhere i believe that there is a good sense of open mindedness, inclusiveness and progressive movement for female empowerment

I dont think any woman on a roster in the wnba would have any issue with you or anyone else opposing views on how they expressed themselves in that one game.

Now you’re just being disparaging of women’s sports in general. Absolutely shameful sexism, but not entirely unexpected as one -ism in someone usually accompanies others.

Sexist or just speaking in reality? There’s just not a lot of interest in it. You can’t make people be interested. Same with plenty of other sports played by males that the general public doesn’t care much about. If you care, you care, and if you don’t you don’t. But if it’s not your thing, it doesn’t mean you are sexist.

You'll only be watching on TV.

And IF our basketball teams did chose to be disrespectful like that, nobody will see it as they don't show the anthem on TV.

But hey, you're a real American social justice warrior as long as nobody dare challenges you.

Ha your finding a way to now justify that will still watch it got it.

And cheers to you my friend the true American Patriot who won’t watch spots because of a group of young men’s choice to silent protest.

Probably not but some here sure do.

I dont care that people here disagree with how those women chose to express themselves in that situation. I am pro for them deciding what to do. They didnt physically assault anyone. They didnt use foul language. However, the crux of the scenario on this thread is that WNBA, no one goes to games, no one watches on TV, the players are irrelevant. This was an attention grab moment. Breonna Taylor was murdered in vain. There is definitely a sexist against women dynamic implied by some here.

This is the longest thread about WNBA in history... and its about them not being on the court. LOL!

Well this is all silly theoretical anyways.

Kneeling for the anthem is a "silent" protest? No, it's not. Speaks volumes.

Breonna Taylor wasn't murdered, she was the unfortunate victim of silly no-knock raid laws. And it had nothing to do with her skin color.
Ok so do believe that if Breonna Taylor were a white woman with a white live in bf who had a registered/licensed firearm and she may have had known assocation with two white drug dealers who push weed and vicodin on the black market that the same timeline of events would have occurred?

You never quit. They're paid their market value. Since nobody gives a crap about the WNBA they're lucky there is a league. I know NYs are fleeing the city in droves, please don't bring your weak, liberal crybaby viewpoints to NW jersey.

Yes, as that exact scenario has happened before.

Not a racial issue but a function of ill-conceived no-knock raid laws.

My reply wasn't a wnba thing, it was a global women thing...i am aware of the wnba and the marketplace it finds itself in.
Again you are the one that decides to take a topical point to a left and liberal end. Support for the women's gender should have nothing to do with left, right, liberal, conservative.

Contracts are dictated by market demand. That’s why they don’t get paid more. They should be happy a professional men’s league thinks subsidizing them is the right thing.

And, yes, woman have it better here than most everyone else.

This was a BS PR stunt. Designed to get attention. Not to accomplish anything real.

Only because you want it to. In your twisted world, criticizing a woman makes you sexist; criticizing an African American makes you racist. You can’t debate something on merit so this is your only pathetic defense.

Good to see our supposed catholic inclusive base trashing women, basketball players and the league they play in

Shu09 on this thread called the players irrelevant. They are among the highest skilled people that do their craft in the entire world for their sex. I am not asking anyone here to be a fan of them or advocate for the WNBA. Another thread that HallDan started on reg board ends up here because the radicals show how divisive they really are.

Another rambling rant with no point. No one said they aren’t talented. Their entertainment value is another story and ratings and attendance don’t lie.

We should be paying research scientists a heck of a lot more than basketball players.

As you said free market dictates...my point to all of this is that i dont care about their gate or tv ratings, i am glad they are keeping breonna taylor in a conversation. I am glad african american young professional athletes of both genders care to have a voice and yes they do actions beyond their job/court.

And in my opinion this is more about being relevant and really caring about the cause. There is nothing sexist about that opinion as much as you want to make it.

Again we have people here who have no idea what it is like to have grown up black. I believe Merge has said a good reasoning on this board in the recent weeks. I dont know what its like myself but I can empathize with the outrage that they feel since the Memorial Day police officer execution of a man over a fake 20 dollar bill. I do feel there is a lot of pent up rage and frustration by black americans in their 20s and 30s.
I don't dismiss black on black crime and murder. Our folks here are happy white senators call out leagues for their business activities with China. I would like to see our white senators help do something to make america better and great again in all communities.
