This. There is no value going down to the MAAC, it doesn't gain us anything. If we're a cellar dweller in the Big East, that's still light-years better.I think if we ever go to the MAAC, we would then lose our fan base.

They have about a 40 year head start in prestige and a program. Not to mention their academic profile dwarfs ours which also contributes.
Wild wild statement..even from you. Even if we did get these “right people in place” starting today. We could catch Duke in about 2050
This!Honestly what sort of fan even suggests we drop down? I mean truly. I wouldn’t want anyone who thought like that regarding my team.
They have an endowment about 60x ours. That gives you an idea of the alumni giving.Duke has about 6,800 undergrads, we have about 6,200 so we are similar in size. How are they doing with NIL, keeping in mind they also have to pay for football? My point is, if they can do it there is no reason we can’t, you just need to have the right people in place.
I think this sounds great in theory but in reality it’s still extremely difficult. All these other coaches offering bigger bucks can coach players up too. Pitino, McDermott, Izzo, Willard, Miller, Smart, etc can coach too. It’s not like kids are going to pass up money because our coach will make him 10 times better than those other coaches. We need a big time major fundraising person or some coach who bring the world of money with him. We can look no further than across the river. SJU had a money guy or money people before. Now we’re going to watch Pitino make donating to SJU the cool thing to do. We need someone in the athletic department or on the basketball staff to do the same for SHU.If Sha and the staff show they can coach kids up, develop them meaningfully as players, and help kids in advance professionally, we will be fine. Looking at the Big East alone, you have a number of coaches who can credibly sell that. Not pointing to a NCAA run - although there are plenty in our league alone who can tout that too. On an individualized basis. All these kids think they have real professional options. You sell that, and show that, the NIL won’t be the be all end all.
Duke also has supporters that are not alumni. Some own commercial enterprises and in NC where college hoops is bigger than pro hoops, kids who play for Duke, NC and even NC State are so well known that doing a commercial or a promo is almost a given. The alumni base is important but the culture of the community can really fund NIL.Duke has about 6,800 undergrads, we have about 6,200 so we are similar in size. This is an important point that I think often gets overlooked. In the grand scheme of things, the only difference between most programs is the color of the jersey. Generally speaking, they are all great coaches and develop players, they all have state of the art facilities, they all play in highly competitive conferences with passionate fanbases, they all offer a salary (NIL), they all have similar program prestige. All these other coaches offering bigger bucks can coach players up too. Undoubtedly true. But I’d bet 80% or more comes from alums.Duke also has supporters that are not alumni.
