– Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a team-high 11 kills, and the Pirates rallied to win a set, but ultimately fell to Marquette, 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 14-25, 19-25), on Friday.

Seton Hall's victory in set two is only the third set Marquette has lost in seven BIG EAST matches so far this season. The Golden Eagles are now a perfect 7-0, including a sweep of defending champion Creighton.

Matheny had a team-high 11 kills to go with seven digs and three aces to lead The Hall's offense. Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had nine kills and seven digs, while Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) had eight kills and nine digs.

In all, six Seton Hall players collected at least seven digs with libero Anna Holland (Waukesha, Wis.) leading the way with 10.

SET 1:
A block by Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) gave The Hall an early 7-5 lead, but Marquette answered with an 8-0 run to grab a 13-7 advantage. Another block, this time by Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) and Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) cut the Pirates' deficit to 14-11, but they couldn't get closer. Marquette went on to a 25-16 first-set victory.

SET 2:
The Pirates came out on fire to open the second set, scoring the first five points, but the Golden Eagles bounced back to tie the score at six. A kill by Matheny gave The Hall an 11-7 lead, but Marquette again responded with four straight to tie the score at 11. The Hall, however, had back-to-back kills by Klungel and Lucas to regain the lead. Up 21-19, the Pirates closed out the set with four straight points to win, 25-19. The Hall had a .382 attack percentage in the second frame.

SET 3:
With the score tied at five, Marquette scored five straight and forced a Pirates' timeout in the third set. A kill by Klungel cut The Hall's deficit to 17-11, but the Golden Eagles closed out the set with an 8-3 run. Marquette had a .370 attack percentage in the third set, compared to just -.029 for Seton Hall.

SET 4:
Neither team took a lead greater than two points for the first half of the fourth set. With the Pirates leading 11-10, Marquette went on a 10-2 run to grab a 20-13 advantage. Facing match point, The Hall scored three straight points, but ultimately fell, 25-19, in set four.

NEWS & NOTES:
  • Seton Hall drops to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST, while Marquette improves to 11-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
  • The Hall is now 5-23 all-time against the Golden Eagles and has dropped the last 14 matches in the series.
  • The Pirates drop to 1-7 in four-set matches this season.
  • Marquette's second-set loss is only the third loss of a set so far in seven BIG EAST matches.
