Apathy & A Young Team

I consider myself as much as a die hard as anyone else. But I will hide no secrets that I draw the line at fans paying players.

I believe the fans should contribute financially to the cost of the ticket price that puts them in their seat. And I support those who can contribute further towards the betterment of the overall athletic department.

I 100% agreed that an athlete should be able to make money on true endorsement type deals in the spirit of NIL and maintain their amateur status (ie Olivia Dunn at LSU) but was never a supporter of the charade it’s become which is straight up pay for play.

If you believe the athlete has earned a piece of the pie, then they should be compensated by the school who is making those profits. Shaheen shouldn’t have to give up a portion of his salary to do that, he earned the contract he signed. If the school wants to allocate those resources differently for the next coach, so be it.

This has always been a business arrangement. Your room and board and college degree for your athletic services has now morphed into they want their representation of the profits for those same services.

I fail to see how my money (beyond buying a ticket or merchandise) becomes part of that business arrangement. So fans should be upset with the way the school prepared for this, they should be disappointed because the results are disheartening, but I honestly have little empathy for those who have contributed their discretionary dollars (and I hope it’s just that) to this farce called NIL.
I’m with you in concept but that is long dead. This is the new reality unless SHU finds a way to increase the revenue or budget accordingly now that they can use funds. I’m not asking Sha to be a donator. He’s going to get his money. But coaching salaries are now part of the expense. And if SHU has really maxed out at the $1.5M level bc our fans have a philosophical problem with it more than our peers, we’re dead. They lay the coach $2.5M alone.

Mike Repole is given a birthday cake at MSG bc he’s a fan financially supporting them. Marquette retains players why?

The NCAA didn’t want to share their exploding revenue and wanted to keep the billions. They still don’t. Enter NIL. Plus the legal system too.

There’s no hope to improve without donations or the school reassessing budgets university wide. You hope to find mega donors like Repole so that fans who don’t want to donate out of principle can still enjoy the team and contribute to tickets etc.

So where was Yalden?

The 30,000 foot view of this, to me, indicates Sha is fighting to live in a world that once was instead of embracing the world that is. You are correct, saying "I don't know" is not an acceptable answer as the head coach, and the fact he says it all the time lends him little leeway on the matter.

Same goes for the players; they are paid professionals now. If you are hurt, if you are injured, if you have personal matters to attend to, if you are struggling on the court....can't take it personally if it's put out in front of the media anymore. It is officially your job and, accordingly, the paying customers' right to know.
Good point. Sha and the administration need to adapt to the changing environment on the court and off. A lot of coaches struggle when jumping up a level and have to make adjustments to grow. Adapt or the game passes you by.

Do we have any reasons to hope for a better season next year?

I bet Villanova is saying the same thing.

Plus—maybe there’s hope. Louisville was probably worse than us and they’ve rebounded back.
Nova absolutely. 47-42 since Jay left. If they don't finish strong, will be 3 years without the NCAAs. Who will they bring in to replace Neptune?

Louisville crashed to rock bottom like we have but they've always had the funding to dig out. Hire a competent coach and give him a barrel of money to get players and they're back.

As a young player, Coleman is still developing his durability. He faded last year towards the end of the season and missed the final 3 games due to illness. Obviously he had issues in the preseason that led to his slow start and again missed a lot of practice over Winter break.

Like many young players, he needs to devote himself to taking care of his health and gaining overall strength and durability. These are the dog days of the schedule. They had their 2 "bye" weeks early and are now in the middle of a stretch of 10 games in 31 days.

Sha has had a problem communicating with the media about player availability/injuries since he got the job. He gets visibly angry when players are out and doesnt want to talk about it. Always saying "I don't know." Being he is the only person in the Program who communicates to fans and media, that is not an acceptable answer.

There is something off, either he thinks the players are soft or he disagrees with how the trainers and doctors treat injuries. Maybe a bit of both. I've theorized that it may be we are overly playing safe since the Powell lawsuit but it's just a guess. Clearly, talking about player availability angers our HC and he can't hide it.

Ahh just another athletic 20 year old coming down with those pesky back spasms. Funny how that happens

I guess the latest check didn’t clear or he was touring another campus

Agreed overall. It also opens the question as to could a team with a limited budget like Seton Hall pay a coach $1M and spend the other $1.5M on payroll and be better off? For example, old friend John Dunne who makes less than that.

IMO people are complaining not because whatever expectation they had isn't being met, rather because this season has been an awful experience on every level. If would be even more of a bloodbath if Holloway's last name was Blaney or Willard or Orr. People love him, he's one of us, he's earned that. And he's using up all benefit of the doubt this year because he's overseeing a worse season - by miles - than any of them had. People WANT Sha to succeed here. The others had to prove it to them.

And the diehards who love the program, where each season means something to them as a hobby and enjoyment, and are now contributing financially to payroll, yeah, we're all going to still support and have a right to bitch about it. The Spring will be much more revealing to where this program is going and the type of players we bring in.

So while I agree with what you’re saying, I’ll add that Sha has earned the longer leash despite some posters on here.

1. He’s demonstrated he can do more with less with the run at St Peters.

2. He’s already been an assistant here at SHU.

3. He’s an ex-player and one of the best we’ve ever had (and local).

4. He has connections with players around the area and knows high school coaches.

5. His name precedes him. His name has cache unlike the aforementioned coaches above.

Not saying he will be successful, but there’s an element of myth with him that wouldn’t surprise any of us if he starts churning out winning seasons.

But once the OOC played itself out I wasn’t delusional that we were going to have some magical turnaround in the BE with what is on the court. People are still complaining like they expect differently.

I was just looking for some positives with the hopes that we could retain 2-3 players that could have an impact next year. This also goes out on a limb that we can find the money to pay them.

However, Coleman’s OOC vs conference splits are night and day. Middleton and Alibge have improved. Felton is getting some run and Gus brings energy and tends to be in the right sport on the floor. Godswill isn’t horrendous for what I was expecting for a player so raw.

I hate that people believe this was an unknown/ rebuilding year. There is no such thing as a rebuilding year anymore. But I play dumb and think that no one wants our damaged goods and maybe we can bring back the players mentioned above.

If we all we are going to do is complain that we suck and that none of the players we want can be retained…then just wake me up when the season is over. This is the reaction we are getting from the fans, exactly why no one showed up last night, and why they won’t show up for the rest of the year.

Also everyone needs to stop pretending that a reboot next year is going to change anything. It’s like a group 1 public school trying to compete with the parochial schools in NJ hoops. No chance…rinse and repeat, maybe one year you get lucky and 2-3 guys blow away expectations at the time and you have a punchers chance.

So if the die hards can’t try to find a glimmer of hope, then what’s even the point anymore. I am trying to grasp at whatever straw we can at this point. Deep down I am accepting the gloom and doom that our program is done for, in this current state of CBB.

Let me let everyone else in on another little secret, Sha being nice to a bunch of crappy basketball players in the future, doesn’t make them any less crappy. We need talent to start with and we need $$$ to get that talent.

Does anyone want to win the conference title?

Big time game shaping up for February 4th with Marquette visiting St. John's at MSG.

Also a big win for Xavier. Looks like the BE will have 4 teams as locks for the NCAA Tournament - Marquette, St. John's, Creighton, and Connecticut - and maybe they're the 5th. X is #55 in the NET at 13-8. They don't have any bad losses, but just 1-6 against Q1. They're 5-2 against Q2. They play at Creighton Wednesday night.

The next closest, Villanova, is way off. They're 12-9 NET #62, but 0-5 against Q1 with 2 Q3 losses and a Q4 loss, yikes.
