Bad and Boring - A Bad Recipe

Close to 50 years watching Hall Hoops and the last season and a quarter have been among the hardest to endure. It's bad basketball that's tough on the eyes and my health at 67 years old. I find myself resigned to the continual bricks from deep and the pound cake dripping for 20 seconds before getting into an offensive set. Or the slow starts after the opening tip. It is disheartening and depressing - all at the same time. It feels like Groundhog Day as it happens game in and game out. Nothing ever changes. I'm afraid that Sha is too set in his ways and plans on staying the course. We are going down a path that sets the stage for three more months of what we've seen over the past 15 months - bad and boring hoops. Something has to change otherwise it is a very long season, which it is already quickly becoming. What potential player - recruit or portal dude wants to play in this offensive scheme? I firmly believe we are at a crossroads. Which direction we take is going to be interesting to see. Bad and boring are a recipe for the Big East basement and irrelevance in the future. What say all of you?

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall's Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) and Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) were named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.

In order to qualify for the prestigious All-District Team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.50 grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically and must have played in at least 90 percent of her team's contests.

Jakubowski finished a stellar four-year career at Seton Hall with 1,797 career assists, 919 career digs and 47 career double-doubles. In 2023, she finished second on the team with 442 assists and 4.51 assists per set. A Chi Alpha Sigma National Student-Athlete Honor Society member, she is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection.

Matheny made a triumphant return after a devastating knee injury last year to lead The Hall in total kills, kills per set and points per set in 2023. She collected 12 double-doubles last season and was named to the UC Irvine Invitational All-Tournament Team and the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 4. A two-time All-Academic BIG EAST selection, she has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Tulli had a major breakout year in 2023, collecting career-highs in kills, kills per set, blocks and blocks per set. Her 0.97 blocks per set ranked seventh in the BIG EAST Conference. Named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team, Tulli is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member and has maintained an impressive 3.72 grade point average.

What did you expect???

We were picked 9th in the pre-season polls. We knew Sha had a tendency to over-look Dawes short comings. We had to mesh unknown transfers into our system. It's simply a matter of getting better players. Yes, Bediako is a nice surprise and Coleman is a breath of fresh air; but Sha is way over his head in trying to mesh a team of freshmen and transfers. He's not been motivating his team. I'm sure a lot of that is his misplaced confidence in Dawes. Lifetime 40% 3-point shooter, but what has he done lately?? That's what matters.

Kooks' tee shirts

I just spoke to Eric Liebler and he asked me to post this.

Those that have purchased Kooks' tee shirt are welcomed to take a picture and send it to Eric at eliebler@g3marketing.com

He will then put a collage together for Kadary showing all the fans wearing them. It will be a great way to celebrate the fans and promote more people buying. And of course it will help a Seton Hall player make some money legally via NIL.

I have two shirts and Hallrox and I will send the picture to Eric.

Those that are doing the same please post here to encourage others to help.

Tough Times So Far

I’m not quite sure if we are at the roughest patch of a 4 or 5 year journey that will see SHU basketball return to the form of the last decade or we have entered the DePaul/Gtown mode of the last many years. I truly don’t know. My opinion is that Sha and staff have the wrong mix of players right now. In Year one and two they have really screwed up in adding dynamic well rounded basketball players. The starters that have joined Richmond have so many deficiencies in their individual skill sets. Richmond is very good but not a superstar.

The NIL situation is real without question and will knock SHU out of the box with strong recruits. Hopefully, we don‘t lose Coleman next season. Actually, Sha and staff may have done better with this last batch of recruits. As others have mentioned Sha must become more flexible and tone down the tough guy act. He does seem consumed by success in Practice for whatever reasons. So far he’d get a D Or C- in his tenure and that’s being generous NIL or no NIL. He is frustrated with his team and we are frustrated with him and his team. This could be a very long year and we all know it. Better days will come back in my opinion with or without Sha and company. Let’ see how they play the next two games.

Bench Propels Seton Hall To Hold On For Win Over Monmouth

By Colin Rajala

Seton Hall escaped the mid-major portion of its nonconference schedule without a bad buy-game loss, holding on for a 70-61 victory over Monmouth Tuesday evening at the Prudential Center.

Continuing a prevailing theme of the season, Seton Hall’s starters got off to yet another slow start, failing to take the lead over the Hawks in the first seven minutes of the contest, making it 85 straight minutes over more than two games that the Pirates have played without a lead, which dates back to the early minutes of its road game at sixth ranked Baylor six days ago.

The starters failed to create early separation or much excitement for the crowd with another disjointed start that included four turnovers and missed four layups, which was reminiscent of The Hall’s early
seven-point deficit to Rutgers in Saturday’s loss in the Garden State Hardwood Classic.

Four Seton Hall reserves ignited a 17-0 run over more than six minutes of game time to take a commanding 27-12 lead with freshman wing Isaiah Coleman and freshman guard Malachi Brown serving as the catalysts.

Coleman finished the game with a team-leading 17 points, shooting 7/12 from the field, to go along with four rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 27 minutes of play.

“That’s one thing he does [playing with energy], and that’s why he’s been playing. I don’t look at offense, I know everybody else looks at offense. I look at energy and passion, and he brings both. That’s why he’s been playing, and when you play like that, good things happen,” Head Coach Shaheen Holloway said of Coleman.

Brown recorded five points, two assists, one rebound and one steal in nine minutes of action after senior guard Kadary Richmond sat with two fouls.

“I’ve been on Malachi because I want him to be a different player, like a change of pace-type guard. He’s so reserved and so laid back, and that’s kind of who he is as a person, being from the south. So, I’ve been on him to change the pace of the game. I need a lightning-quick guard to come in there, and I thought he did a good job. So, I’m proud of him, and that’s something he can build on,” Holloway added,
in the post-game press conference.

Six straight points on two three-pointers off the bench from sophomore guard Jaquan Sanders expanded Seton Hall’s lead to its largest of the game, 35-19, with just over three minutes remaining in the half, but Monmouth closed the half on a 10-5 run to cut the halftime lead to 40-29.

All told, the Pirate subs tallied 25 points in the first half, accounting for 62.5% of the team’s points. The reserves’ efforts gave Seton Hall a 15-3 advantage in points off turnovers, including a 10-3 edge in fast
break points, while also outscoring the Hawks 22-6 in the paint.

As the bench giveth in the first half, the starters taketh away in the second half as they failed to maintain or extend the lead, going 2-8 from the charity stripe after getting into the bonus less than five minutes into the final stanza.

Seton Hall’s lead dwindled to just three points, 47-44, with 12 minutes remaining after a three from Xander Rice, senior guard and son of Monmouth Head Coach Kind Rice, capped a 15-4 run and prompted a timeout from Holloway. Rice led all scorers with 20 points on an efficient 4/8 from long range despite shooting an overall inefficient 5/19 from the field.

A Coleman three assisted by Richmond out of the timeout pushed the lead back to six, but Monmouth continued to hang on into the waning minutes of the game thanks to Seton Hall’s lackadaisical effort
defending the three-point line, allowing 8-18 shooting before the Hawks went cold late, ending the game zero for its last seven.

Over the game’s final ten minutes, Seton Hall only managed to score three field goals, but the foul trouble they racked up early on Monmouth proved to be the difference maker as the Pirates connected on 10 of its final 12 attempts from the charity stripe to stave off the comeback.

Now, the Pirates will prepare for their final tune up before its daunting 20-game Big East slate as they look for their first win over high major opponent, traveling to play Missouri two hours away from its campus at Kansas City’s T-Mobile Center on Sunday.

URBANA, Ill. -- The 2-year-old grandson of Milwaukee Bucks coach Adrian Griffin died Saturday after the child's father found him unresponsive earlier in the day.

Jayce D. Griffin of Urbana, Illinois, was pronounced dead Saturday at 10:40 a.m. at the Carle Foundation Hospital, according to Champaign County coroner Duane Northrup. The coroner's office said preliminary reports from an autopsy conducted Monday showed no evidence of trauma or foul play.

"At this time, the death of Jayce Griffin appears to be from natural causes pending additional testing and final autopsy results," Northrup said in a statement.

Northrup said the death is under investigation by the Champaign police department and the Champaign County coroner's office. Additional information won't be released until the completion of the investigation.

"My grandson Jayce was very special to me and my family, and his passing is an agonizing tragedy that will be felt forever," Adrian Griffin said in a statement released by the Bucks. "I appreciate your respecting our family's grief and privacy at this time."

Coaching Staff

Davis is obviously the only assistant that is getting us recruits.

What is Whelan adding? If it's scouting and schemes. Then he's literally adding nothing.

What is the other dude (I actually don't even remember his name) giving us?

They both need to be let go and Sha needs to replace Whelan with someone who actually has a voice and knows how to coach and create schemes - especially on offense. Because it seems Sha can't do this either.

And the other guy needs to be let go for someone who has recruiting ability.

And the school needs to figure out where to get money to do this.
