UNLV Game

Has anyone seen them play? Seems like maybe people watched their game with BC?

They’re 65th in OE, 85th in DE, 305th in tempo. They’re just 298th in defensive rebound % and 338th in defensive FTA:FGA (bodes well for us). Average at best across the board in other areas, including bench minutes, and don’t seem to rely on the 3-ball despite somehow beating Creighton by 15 in December in a game they shot 10/22 from 3 and 22/39 from 2PT.

Went 12-6 in the much-loved MWC.

Took care of Princeton at Jadwin and Boston College at home to get to South Orange.

John Calipari to return as Kentucky men's basketball coach

Myron Medcalf, ESPN Staff Writer

Despite another early exit from the NCAA tournament, Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari will return for his 16th season in 2024-25, according to athletic director Mitch Barnhart.

Calipari's future seemed cloudy following the Wildcats' first-round loss to Oakland, a 14-seed, in the NCAA tournament last week. It was the latest upset on the program's résumé; two years ago, Kentucky was a 2-seed when it lost to 15-seed Saint Peter's in the opening round of the 2022 tournament.

"As we normally do at the end of every season, Coach Calipari and I have had conversations about the direction of our men's basketball program and I can confirm that he will return for his 16th season as our head coach," Barnhart wrote Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter.

Calipari, speaking Monday on his season-ending radio show, said he understood that the standard at Kentucky -- the winningest program in men's college basketball history and an eight-time national champion -- is to cut down the nets in the final game of the year, and acknowledged that his team had fallen short of that goal.

"I talked again about the standard ... that I believe in, that I think we can do," Calipari said. "But that standard of national titles has been here from Coach [Adolph] Rupp on, and the only thing I'm saying to all our fans is you know I'm going to work -- work in our state, work on this program, this university. ... That's my commitment. I'm not changing, 24/7, let's go -- whether it's recruiting, all the stuff that we have to do."

Calipari has one national title (2012) and his most recent Final Four appearance was in 2015. The past few years had been rough for the Wildcats' devoted fans, as Kentucky finished 9-16 in 2020-21, the program's worst record in 100 years, and suffered early postseason exits in 2022 and 2023.

But the emergence of Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham, projected top-10 picks in the NBA draft, and the return of veteran Antonio Reeves suggested this season could be different for the Wildcats. Then, Oakland reserve Jack Gohlke hit 10 3-pointers in an 80-76 upset win over Kentucky, a result that prompted buzz about Calipari's future.

It seems clear to all that Calipari -- who would have been owed a $33 million buyout if the school elected to fire him now -- will face intense pressure to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament next season and rebuild a team that finished 111th in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Kentucky's 2024 recruiting class includes three of the top 25 prospects in ESPN's rankings, including four-star recruit Karter Knox and a pair of five-star talents in Jayden Quaintance and Johnuel Fland.

Calipari has faced criticism for relying too heavily on youth when most teams are getting older through the transfer portal. But he said Monday on his radio show that he will continue to recruit freshman talent and balance his team with veterans from the portal.

"This is like wearing a coat: It never goes away," Calipari said. "But I love it. This is what I want. This is what I wanted. This is why I never left. This is it. And now it's let's come together and let's do something. Let's do something special. We've done it. Let's do it again."

Conference representation in Sweet 16…..

I think this proves to be one of the more objective ways to measure which Power conferences reign. By my count:

ACC (4) - conference has been knocked in recent years, but you tend to see teams continue to do well in Tourney

Big East (3) - Creighton and Marquette survive and advance in Round 2, UConn appears to still be the favorite, but I get the feeling this year could be the year where we see all 1 seeds make the Final 4, so no easy path To repeat

B1G, SEC, Big 12 - (2) each.

PAC 10 - (1)

MTN West - (1) The Big East bid stealing conference

WCC - (1) Gonzaga having a nice Tourney

No doubt, we got screwed being excluded from Tourney.

Field of 68-Sha

Goodman, Dauster, Ogelsby just spent about 5 minutes taking about how Sha is a great fit for Louisville and that’s who they should turn their attention to since Dusty May is going to Michigan…They said he will never have the NIL to succeed at SHU. Goodman said SHU was ahead of DePaul and maybe Butler in terms of NIL last year. They also said L’Ville has tons of money to make an unbelievable offer to who they want to hire.

Time to worry ?

Carr K's 12, Hill Homers Twice as Pirates Split With Bluejays

Stats

South Orange, N.J. – Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) took a perfect game into the sixth inning and struck out 12 for the second consecutive start as the Pirates took game one of their doubleheader against Creighton on Friday afternoon. The Bluejays were able to capture a closely fought second game, 3-2.

Game 1: Seton Hall 4, Creighton 3
How it Happened

  • Both offenses remained quiet until the third inning, when Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) launched a home run over the wall in left center to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
  • In the fifth, The Hall would plate two more runs. Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) would lace a single to left field, scoring Hill from third. Next, Katey Brennan (Yardley, Pa.) would bring home Carr with a sacrifice fly to left.
  • Carr retired the first 15 batters she faced, allowing her first baserunner of the game after a leadoff single to Sydra Seville in the sixth. The Bluejays would eventually knot things up in that frame, as Madeline Vejvoda cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it a 3-3 game.
  • After bouncing back and working a clean seventh, Carr and the Pirates went to work in the bottom half of the inning to earn the win.
  • Hill opened the inning with a single to left, followed by Carr doubling down the right field line. Hill advanced to third, but was able to come across and score the winning run after an errant throw from right field.
News & Notes
  • Carr has struck out 12 batters in back-to-back starts after setting her career-high with that mark on Tuesday at Rider.
  • Hill finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances.
  • Carr and Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) each also collected multiple hits on the game.
  • The win extended Seton Hall's winning streak to six.
Game 2: Creighton 3, Seton Hall 2
How it Happened

  • While both offenses took a few innings to get going in game one, they came out of the gates hot in game two. Creighton put two runs up in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by Emma Rosonke.
  • The Pirates would get one run back in the bottom of the first as Carr hooked a home run inside the left field foul pole.
  • Two innings later, Hill would tie things up with her second home run of the doubleheader.
  • The Bluejays would take the lead for good in the sixth, as Cayla Nielsen singled to center to give Creighton a 3-2 advantage.
News & Notes
  • Hill's two-homer day moves her total up to five on the season.
  • Carr's home run gives her a team-leading six so far this season as well as a club-best 18 RBI.
  • Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) was saddled with her first loss of the season, moving her record to 5-1.
What's Next
The Pirates and Bluejays will play the rubber match on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for noon at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.

As I see it

1. Connecticut 23-3
Repeat?

2. Marquette 27-9
All year trading places with Creighton

3. Creighton 25-9
Harder path to the Elite 8 than Marquette

4. Seton Hall 22-12
Screwed

5. St. John's 20-13
Late push too late

6. Providence 21-14
Nice first year for English

7. Villanova 18-16
Guess they're better than Butler. But who knows

8. Butler 18-15
Matta didn't have a lot to work with

9. Xavier 16-18
Season was in the toilet before it began

10. Georgetown 9-23
Better get your jollies this year

11. DePaul 3-29
What else is there to say? The worst team in the history of the conference

So what is the solution??

beings we can’t count on winning 14 games or more in the conference to secure a bid what is our best method going forward. Especially if we heaven forbid only win 9 or 10 conference games.

Do we:

A- schedule a bunch of patsies and hopefully steamroll them all?

B- schedule a bunch of top programs and hopefully steal a few and play tight games?

I suggest B, however, the problem with tht nowadays is that a program may be great in 2024 when you agree to scheduling but in 2026 or 2027 when you play them they may stink due to portal and nil

I’m not saying we have to schedule UNC and Kansas. But there’s no reason we can’t get Virginia, Penn St, Maryland, etc on the schedule for winnable quad 1/2 games..

But I don’t wanna see more than 1 game a year against our usual suspects: fdu, spu, rider, Monmouth, Wagner, etc. we have to do something to stand out, scheduling them for multiple games every year is pointless.
