Charleston/Coaching

Happy with the way things turned out going 2 of 3 after what we’ve see to date. One thing that really stands out that I haven’t heard anyone talking about is up 4 yesterday with two timeouts and the ball under a minute. Jenkins comes down right in front of the bench and proceeds to drive to the basket way too early in the shot clock. Sha has to use a timeout there to settle things down or tell Jenkins who’s right in front of you to run some clock. Maybe he did and Jenkins didn’t listen. Maybe Jenkins thought they’d foul. I thought there were two clear choices (run clock or timeout) and neither were used. Need smarter execution there. That almost cost them the game.

The Giants - New Low. Approaching Howard Beale Status

As if the Hall debacle wasn't enough, The G Men made it weekend of depression. I am a 60 year plus fan and the last decade makes the awful late 60's and 70's look appealing. At least those teams scored points (and gave them up in boatloads). These Giant teams are the worst combination - bad and boring. What was once appt viewing is now an afterthought. Played pickleball in the am but came home and turned on the telly to watch the inevitable. Jones is awful. Question if Daboll is the guy. Joe S has whiffed on too many draft picks. Not a lot to get excited about. Although I hate anything related to tanking, it might be the year to do so. Mara is out of touch. We're a laughing stock. The season can't end soon enough. I feel better after the rant.

Pirates Stifle FAU From Three, Securing Win in Charleston Classic Third-Place Game

resize

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In a game that came down to the wire, the Seton Hall men's basketball team claimed victory over Florida Atlantic, 63-61, in their final game of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic in TD Arena.

Scotty Middleton had a massive 10 points in the first half (4-of-4 from the field, 2-of-2 from three) for the Pirates (4-3), while Chaunce Jenkins led the Pirates in scoring for the fifth time this season. The Owls (4-4) had their worst shooting day from beyond the arc this season (4-of-28, 14.2%), while Pirates had one of their best days (45.5%).

How It Happened

While the Pirates struggled to find their footing in the opening minutes offensively against the Owls, the Pirates' sturdy defense helped the team find their way into the game. After a pair of threes from The Hall, they trailed by a slim 7-6 margin with 15:03 remaining in the half. Both teams would quickly enter into a defensive battle, with both schools failing to find a bucket for over two minutes.

As the clock ticked under 13 minutes remaining in the half, the Pirates found a spark off the bench with freshman Jasheem Felton. Immediately after entering the game, Felton would find a layup and Scotty Middleton would net his second three of the night to put the Pirates up 11-7 with 12:01 remaining in the half. The Pirates remained hot, going on a 13-5 run and extending their lead to 22-12 with 7:24 left in the half.

FAU responded in kind with a 9-5 run powered by Leland Walker and Matas Vokietaitis to cut the Pirates lead to 27-21 with 3:50 remaining in the half. Over the remaining time, the Pirates would lock down the Owls offense, save a singular converted foul shot by Baba Miller. Chaunce Jenkins would cap the Pirates' best offensive half of the season by converting a layup with seven seconds remaining in the half, sending the Pirates to the half up 34-22.

Coming out of halftime, the Owls tried to claw back into the game. They would cut the Pirates' lead to 39-30 with 16:18 remaining in a run that culminated with two buckets from Baba Miller. Jenkins and the Pirates, however, would quickly stamp out FAU's momentum and go up 44-33, extending The Hall's lead back to 11 points with 14:05 remaining in the game.
For the next five minutes Pirates held serve with the Owls, but could not manage to comfortably pull away from the AAC foe as the score sat at 51-38 with nine minutes left. With the door left open, FAU went on a 15-7 run to reduce the Pirates lead to five, trailing 58-53 with 4:03 remaining.

Straight away, Isaiah Coleman took over on offense, netting a jumper and putting up a layup that would turn into a Yacine Toumi putback with 2:12 remaining in the game. After both teams stifled each other's offense, FAU's Kyky Tandy cut the Pirates lead to one with 25 seconds left on the clock.

With the Pirates' margin for error narrowing, Prince Aligbe was sent to the free throw line to shoot a one-and-one. After converting the front end, Aligbe would miss the second shot and the Owls would push up the floor with 16 seconds remaining. In the biggest moment of the game, the defense stepped up, forcing FAU's Leland Walker into a bad shot and securing the 63-61 victory.

Seton Hall Wins 3rd Place Consolation Game Vs FAU In Charleston Classic

By Colin Rajala

Seton Hall left the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic a markedly improved team after achieving a 2-1 record to win third place in the early season multi-team event.

In a game of offense versus defense, the Pirates defense reemerged and held strong, holding Florida Atlantic nearly 30 points below their season average on 33.9% shooting from the field and 14.3% from three, including multiple separate four-minute plus scoreless droughts, in a 63-61 consolation game victory.

It was a balanced attack for Seton Hall as ten players scored for the Pirates while only two were in double figures – guard Chaunce Jenkins, who put together a strong 15 point, three rebound, one assist, one steal effort despite facing constant pressure, and wing Scotty Middleton, who recorded 10 points, all in the first nine minutes of the first half as part of an early 20-10 lead, a lead the Hall would hold onto the rest of the game.

Pacing the Pirates were forward Yacine Toumi with nine points, four rebounds and two assists and guard Isaiah Coleman with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Down 7-3 four minutes into the game after making just one of their first eight shots, Seton Hall went on a 11-0 run capped by a three from guard Dylan Addae-Wusu to take the 14-7 lead, which grew to a 20-10 advantage after Middleton drove the lane, spun back and connected in the paint.

The Hall extended its lead to the largest of the half, 12 points, when Jenkins drove and scored over the Owl’s seven-foot-center Matas Vokietaitis for a 34-22 halftime advantage, which was Florida Atlantic’s lowest scoring half of the early season.

The Pirates took their largest lead of the game, 39-24, less than two minutes into the second half when Jenkins slammed the ball home to prompt an early timeout from Florida Atlantic.

Seton Hall kept the Owls at arm’s length for a majority of the second half as it took Florida Atlantic until six minutes remaining in the game to get within six points, 54-48, thanks to an 8-0 run over the prior two minutes that the Pirates aided by committing two turnovers, missing a layup and two free throws.

The Hall extended their lead back to 10 to steady the ship on the next two possessions after Toumi found Coleman on a back door cut for a wide-open Dunk and Coleman returned the favor, dishing to Toumi, who finished through contact over Vokietaitis for the 58-48 lead with five minutes to go.

However, Florida Atlantic did not go away quietly, cutting the score to 60-57 with two minutes and 39 seconds remaining, but Seton Hall’s defense dug deep and forced the Owls to miss four of its final five shots, one layup and three jumpers, including one three, to earn the 63-61 win.

The Pirates connected on 10/22 (45.5%) from long distance, two more than their previous high of eight, recorded six steals and five blocks and outscored the Owls 12 to four on the fast break.

Thoughts:

Someone was going home 2-1 and someone was going home 1-2, glad we came out on the right side of things to close the tournament

Godswill Erheriene only played four minutes tonight in what wasn’t his best showing, but wanted to note his incredibly quick elevation on the tip

Kyky Tandy, who should have been familiar face for fans as he played at Xavier previously, was certainly not afraid to shoot the ball for FAU.

Too many offensive rebounds early allowed FAU to jump out to the lead, luckily the Hall only trailed by a few thanks to their defense. Both teams shot a combined 5/27 to start the half.

After their 1/8 start the broadcast let us know that SHU cant finish as they’re only shooting 38% from two on the season, quite the stat.

Loved seeing Felton getting the early minutes from Sha as a reward for his tournament play. To make it even better, Jahseem rewarded Sha for the move by driving and scoring in the paint for the 8-7 lead early. Lots of good Felton tape early as he is making possessions productive even if they don’t lead to points, example driving lane and making smart kick out pass to Jenkins, who missed the three. Jenkins would connect on a triple from Felton several possessions later as well. Encouraging to see Jahseem not afraid to shoot and attack.

Things you like to see: Toumi drawing an offensive foul to keep FAU four-minute scoreless stretch going in the first half, which ended up being over five minutes.

Great to see Threebek get the board, take it up on the break and find Jenkins, who was fouled but converted both free throws. SHU playing at like the fifth slowest rate in the country but I would like to see some more controlled breaks from them.

Coleman tripped on a fastbreak layup with no one in front of him reminded me that college really should have some form of clear path foul.

Man, Aligbe can’t buy a bucket on the drive. First he missed a layup, then he traveled before his next shot, the third attempt was an off kilter overpowered attempt against the seven footer and the fourth was a missed dunk. Luckily for his sake and ours, the fifth time's a charm as he scored off the pass from Felton.

I have to say that Dual looked comfortable/composed attempting and sinking both of his free throws in the first half

Coleman getting more and more impressive rounding into form. Let's hope that improvement accelerates even more as he gets more confident.

Okorafor with two blocks early in the second half, nice to see him be able to impose his will on the defensive end.

I’ve been on Toumi for weak takes to the hoop lately, so I have to give props where props are due because he took it strong and under control a few times tonight, none more important than late

Favorite play of the game: SHU showing some ball movement before Jenkins makes the extra pass to Felton for the corner three and a 47-34 lead.

Thought the offensive foul for pushing off call on Jenkins late in the second was a tough one as both guys were hand fighting and I like to see players deciding the game when it’s a five-point game with three minutes to go. Announcers acknowledged the foul as a touchy one a play or two later after Aligbe got away with a foul on a block attempt.

Very good end-game final defensive possession for Seton Hall as Florida Atlantic almost didn’t get the shot off.

RU choke not chop

Just witnessed to quote Carino the most absurd end to a FB game.

Rutgers up 3. Illinois (ranked 24th) facing 4th down attempting a 58 yard FG into the wind with 13 seconds remaining. Schiano calls TO ostensibly to ice the kicker. Illinois reconsiders and out of the timeout throws a touchdown and RU loses on senior day. What was GS thinking?

His game day coaching is truly suspect.

Not sure if i should be pleased or frightened

That is a line from a forgotten movie that cracked up an old pal. And it sorta applies today. I will be having dinner tonight at Johns of 12th Street (hope Tony Soprano doesnt stop by) with my son and his girl at 5:30, then watching his band Cant Swim at Irving Plaza. I am going to try to keep my phone in my pocket and just enjoy the show.

But if Prof Ed calls me, you can be sure i will pick up the phone and yell Eddie Boy!!!

Go Pirates!!!
