A case to dump electoral college

Democrats have a natural edge in the electoral college, not sure why they want to abolish it.

Because of the inherent flaws, and the reasons for it are not really valid anymore.

There are no inherent flaws with it and the reasons for it are more valid than ever with leftists overwhelmingly living in cities and "blue" states.

The inherent flaws are that it is less democratic.
Your vote against the winner in your state does not count at all which discourages participation where states are very red or very blue.
The election is essentially decided by a handful of purple states which gives them much more power than other states.

One of the reasons why we have electors is that the founders believed people lacked the resources to be informed on the issues. That is no longer the case. The electoral college is operating nothing like what the founders envisioned. They didn't really see the two party partisanship playing out like it has.

This goes in cycles. You make it sound like it has been the same states since the dawn of the US. A problem with a lot of people today is they have no concept of the arc of history and make snap decisions based on a small sample size of facts available only in the present time.

The problem isn’t with the electoral college. The problem is with both parties who are not operating as designed.

Both can be true there.
A flaw in a system doesn't show necessarily show up when things are operating smoothly. It shows up when there is a stress to the system.

I think the flaws in the electoral college are pretty clear and is on track to get worse if the dems ever flip Texas.

Well it’s definitely true about both parties. I don’t see the flaws in the electoral college.

Things are cyclical. Just because the Democrats might become a majority in Texas doesn’t mean that things may be different 10 or 20 years from now.

Right, things can be cyclical and still flawed though.

Was it intentional design that politicians wouldn’t really campaign in a majority of states where the outcome was already known? That it would discourage people from voting in states where their vote doesn’t really count towards allocating the electors? Those are flaws... not features.

How about allocating the electors based on the vote in each state? That would encourage higher participation and Make all votes actually count.

If it went to a straight popular vote then politicians can ignore most of the country and just focus on key cites. No Thanks!

You think they don’t ignore most of the country now?

94% of 2016 campaign events were in 12 states.
25 states had zero events...
