Abbott

Strategically, immigration reform is Biden’s best chance for a political win with a split congress. I’d think he would still be there without the buses, or the political stunt letter from Abbott. Good idea for him to visit. Better if he can make progress on the issue.

The stunt was Harris’ visit two years ago with no follow-up. Where was Kamala today? Didn’t Joe put her in charge?

Yea. That was a stunt, and she has done a bad job on the issue .

Glad Biden was there and I see some opportunity here for him. Smart move making this stop right after the new congressional session. Gotta start working with them by pushing something republicans want and I hope that is the direction he goes.

“Bad” is generous…she’s done nothing.

Start working after two years of sitting on his hands, with a Democratic Congress.

And Trump had a Republican Congress and didn’t get anything done legislatively either even though this was his main issue that he campaigned on.

You need the right environment and opportunity to be able to move forward. A Republican controlled house gives Biden some room to negotiate a path forward. A Republican only solution would be just as bad as a democrat only solution. The best option will be somewhere in the middle and now is the time to find that middle ground.

Why are you bringing up Trump? What does he have to do with Biden’s inaction?

Lame excuse. This can be fixed with common sense solutions. Biden has ignored it completely.

Because you’re trying to simplify it as that he should have gotten something done just because he had a majority, but it’s not quite that easy. Biden will be a unique position where he won’t (in my opinion) be running for re-election so he can make concessions which may not be popular with his base.

He could have just gone on ignoring the issue for the next two years. Wouldn’t you agree that it’s at least good that he’s putting it right up front now as opposed to ignoring it?

I didn't say it was easy, but he has IGNORED the problem which has continued to get worse. He named Harris to go fix it at the start of his Presidency and they have done nothing.

Why did he ignore it for two years? Why are you giving him a pass?

I’ve said previously I thought he has failed on this issue. That’s not giving him a pass.

I’m just glad he’s putting it out there that he’s calling attention to it and not ignoring it now. I wanted it to be the next issue they focused on and it appears that it will be a priority. That’s a good thing.

Lets hope it wasn’t another stunt like when Kamala visited the border two years ago.

It is a good strategy. Make the problem worse so you have something to fix. You have failed him on this issue and you will again. Because Joe is a master at nothingism. (New word) He is not alone.

No president has been able to get any real immigration reform passed.
It would be a major accomplishment if he were able to do it. Still a mountain in front of him, but lets not act like it would be preferable if he kept on ignoring the issue.

Ignoring it wasn’t a good strategy.

Some Presidents have at least tried. Agree that in some respect Congress would rather use it as a dog whiz issue than solve, but it should piss the public off given the amount of fentanyl that is pouring through, the human trafficking and of course the burden on border states.

I agree. Glad he seems like this will be a focus for him now.
Better late then never, or do you just want to complain no matter what he does?

Some Presidents have at least tried.

and results matter right?
Biden will now be added to the list of those who have "tried". Lets hope they get something done here.

I'm not going to get excited about a photo op and three hour visit. That doesn't really qualify as "trying" yet.

Results do matter, but you have to step up to the plate first and take a swing or two. Biden just arrived at the stadium in the fifth inning. Maybe he can find the field.

Mr. Whataboutism has entered the thread...thanks for playing.

theres no whataboutism. just observation. a correct observation.
Nope, incorrect as I shared my issues with Trump and never voted for him. Keep trying and continue to embarrass yourself.

Didn't say you should be excited. But you would criticize him no matter what here.
He can ignore the issue and you'll criticize him, he can put a spotlight on the issue and you'll criticize him.

Biden putting a spotlight here means he thinks there is a path to get something done.
That doesn't guarantee anything, but I would very much prefer that over the alternative of continuing to ignore the issue.

I would like to hear the Republican solutions to the border. I agree with Merge. The split Congress gives this the best opportunity for a "solution." However, I put solution in quotes because there is no real solution.

I think things can be done.
1) the Asylum law needs to be revamped because it is now well known to claim asylum to get into the country. We need to have a better way for people to claim asylum yet not come into the country.

2) More High tech solutions to protect our borders but I have no idea what this may mean. I just hope there is something.

3) DACA people should become citizens.

4) How does one solve half of the illegal immigration problem in which people come to the country legally and overstay their Visa?

This is a very difficult issue with no one solution. You just hope to slow the tide of illegal immigration. But something needs to be done. And in a humane way.

I'll criticize him like anyone else who ignored a major issue. He made a trip to the border - two years too late. Is that a "spotlight"? Maybe to you. I started the thread based on Abbott's confrontation handing Biden a list of proposed solutions because the administration has done nothing outside of another photo op with Harris.

Or he had to show up because he was getting pressure from all sides, even his own party.

Yes it is a spotlight. He didn't need to make the trip. He didn't need to tweet about needing to get something passed through congress.

HE is the one calling attention to it now. That's not by accident.

Yeah, Abbott got his publicity stunt in and you cheer for that and root against anything Biden does.

Gotta wear the team colors.

Abbott and the border governors have been calling attention since he was elected. The only reason he's putting in the appearance is because his own party is sounding the alarm.

Abbott has been dealing with an issue and the only way he got attention was from bussing illegals to NYC, Chicago and DC. Pretty pathetic that it had to come to that to get his behind down to Texas.

Green tennessee gonna be new house chair of homeland security and will be keeping staff at border

That's the only reason? Nothing to do with the fact that they have been planning on focusing on the issue with the new congressional session after the mid term results?

Pretty pathetic that it had to come to that to get his behind down to Texas.

That's just PR. He doesn't need to be there at all honestly. No one cares that he is there other than the news cycle and punditry. Being there just sends the message that he wants to address the issue. That's a good thing and certainly better than "hiding in his bunker" as you expected he would be doing for the next two years.

Speaking of PR…

https://news.yahoo.com/biden-says-trump-handling-documents-013058328.html

Amazing how these documents were found on Nov 2. It would have been nice if he came out and told us immediately. It would have been interesting if this came out when it happened right before Election Day. Imagine that being a big topic on Nov 3 through Election Day.

Obviously, not great. But they found them and voluntarily gave them back, like they should have.
“Not great”?? Lol
Could have avoided all kinds of drama had Trump done the same, or didn’t lie when he certified all documents were returned, or had complied with the subpoena… etc.
He accused Trump of being irresponsible in the way he handled classified documents. These documents were taken by Biden when he was VP…six years ago. Pot meet kettle.

In 2022 more migrants crossed our border than in 4 years of Trump. Had we voted for Trump many parents would still have their children. The drug problem has risen as the cartels are raking in the cash. Cartels are now making more money than the NFL. I guess the loss of human life is good for climate change. 4 more years and we can lower the carbon footprint even more.

Oh yeah, Biden gave them back voluntarily.

As Colonel Jessup said, "yeah, but you have to ask me nicely".

And what’s going to happen in both these cases. Repeat after me
NOTHING.
Jan. 6th nothing
Russiagate nothing
Hunter Biden nothing
Feel like a fool yet, listening for 4 years about something that never happened on the Adam Shitshow.
On and on while they pass 1.7 trillion budget easy as pie. More money equals more investigations equals more distractions equals more money and the wheel keeps on turning. Just remember no good guys or bad guys and we can stop them “we the people” need to unite to stop the madness. We need to stop them for our children, our friends, our neighbors and for humanity. More money more division. You both are doing exactly what they want you to do, supporting an argument leading nowhere.
