Any Juice?

With this team, the students, the fan base in general?
Fans were looking for the Hall to destroy Gtown and beat Villanova. Getting humiliated at Nova took some juice away. The confidence in the team is not there right now. So, its all about tonight. We can lend encouragement, but they have to do it.

Wednesday night…normal tip time….a few questions I have.

What’s your gut saying the attendance will be?

(I’ll say actual attendance between 6-7k - paid will be closer to 9k)

Will the student section turn out in force?

(I don’t think so)

Will the fans there be into it from the start or will they be reserved waiting to see which team shows up?

(🤷‍♂️)

They’ll announce 8500. About 8000 there.

65 percent of students

Fans will be into it from the tap..

I'm not a "Most Important Game" of the season guy, but tonight is a statement game for sure. Which Pirate team shows up?

Senior starters...leaders lead...no excuses.
This. And you never know with this team.

Plus the SHU program is usually on lockdown unless there’s a game, so there’s nothing (rarely) with the media or interviews or pressers between games to gauge or divert their attention. While they may make in McBride’s job harder in raising NIL funds with engagement, from a basketball standpoint there are no excuses.

What do students pay for a game ticket? I realize many might buy a season package.
Back in the day----- way back in the day---- tickets at Walsh were free OR covered by an activities fee.

Be nice to capture the juice we had at Creighton game. It became louder and louder as the players sucked it up and gave what was arguably their best performance of the year, even though we lost. It HAS to begin with the players. The fans will react. Once the team gets a winning pattern going, the juice will be automatic... to start the game off. I was trying to remember back in the early 90's at CAA....... we had automatic juice in many of those games. I'll never forget UNC coming in on a CBS game on a Sunday afternoon, Al McGuire and Billy Packer on the call. Now THAT was automatic juice. But the players had to have earned it.

We need to stop blaming the students here. It's not like the fanbase in general are coming out in droves. Lots of empty seats behind the benches.
The fanbase has always been fickle, but until recently the student section was something we could always count on to bring energy at the Rock. Maybe the school just needs to do a better job marketing the team.

The arena is too big. We actually draw reasonably well but the optics are terrible. One of the drawbacks of not having an on-campus arena. The Rock should be reserved for the games with heavy demand. But alas, that is not the case.

Saturday afternoon tips are always juicier than weeknights. The Marquette and Creighton games had a lot more buzz than the UConn game which was a weeknight.

The school is doing all it can to draw fans, were a small liberal arts school. Lets stop blaming them for everything, its hard to work with no funds.

Hearing from Dan how bad the NIL is doing its pretty sad after all the bitching on this board for months.

I’ll be there. I’m usually a glass half filled fan but the trend lines are not positive. On the other hand, Kansas lost by 29 on the road at Texas Tech.

And play the rest of the games at the 1950's high school Walsh Gym and it's 1300 seats?

Team is not transparent with any of the fans. Students less interested as team does not engage the students.

No. My point is we don’t have an on-campus arena. If we did, we wouldn’t be renting out the Prudential Center for games that don’t draw. Walsh is a glorified high school gym, not meant for today’s Big East basketball.

I've been a season ticket holder for over 10 years. When the team is in contention, the Pru rocks. Some of the past games against Nova -- the last game before the Covid lockdown for example -- the atmosphere was unbelievable. I don't think you'd get anything like that with a 5-6K person arena on campus, even in a dreamworld where there was space and money and zoning approval for such a thing. If getting to Newark on a weeknight is dicey, try getting 5K people through Farinella Gate not to mention parking on campus!

Nonsense- the Pru is excellent for college hoops.
I disagree. We have to curtain off the upper deck to create any semblance of an atmosphere. The ceiling is too high and the noise gets drowned out into the rafters. It’s a professional arena that is only half full on its best day. A sellout to us is a sold out lower bowl which happens infrequently.

I hate to use our little brothers south of us but their dump of an arena absolutely crushes our atmosphere. It’s not so much from a lack of fan support. It’s because the Prudential Center is too big. Jersey Mike’s seats 8k. Our average attendance says that’s a sellout yet the Rock looks empty. Why? Because it’s too big.

Now imagine if the Rock was reserved for those big games and the Wednesday night Xaviers and Georgetowns of the world were on campus like many other schools are able to do? It’ll never happen but one can dream.

Would be great if we could build a suitable space, but I don't think we can. But -- imagine if we consistently had a competitive team and what heading to the Rock on a cold February night would feel like then! ;-)

Easier said than done, but getting back to the tournament and making a run would up our attendance significantly.

In that 19-20 season the atmosphere was incredible for a lot of home games, even for the non marquee matchups. Hell, the week we had Texas and Rutgers back-to-back was incredible and that was barely over 2 years ago.

If we can get back to those type of crowds consistently, I think we’ll see the Pru center develop a reputation as a tough place to play on the road.

Maybe tonight is the start of a new winning streak. One can only hope.

The problem is the attendance/ juice is so fickle. One bad loss here or there and it feels like the air in the balloon immediately goes out.

There needs to be a culture in place where going to the game is always the place to be if we are competitive. I can’t justify expecting a large turnout when you have the product on the floor Gtown and DePaul are putting out.

The reality since 2016 is if we are winning, the crowds will come. Stop with the on campus arena. We all know it’s not happening.

Those big non conference games always generate more excitement because we don’t play them often. Rutgers is obviously a rivalry and will always carry weight.

I agree that those crowds were awesome but Myles Powell was must see and that team was incredible.

I hate listening to all these players getting interviewed and when they ask them where the toughest place to play is, we never come up and for good reason.

We play in a hockey arena and fans are too far away from the court. It wasn’t meant for basketball but we do our best. A lot of it has to do with the students. They’re terrible this year and it’s obviously not changing with only 4 home games left.

150 season charge. I lnow, as i pay one for my daughter, and one for a friend's student with modest means. The level of season ticket purchases for this year was strong, but so many students have Wednesday evening classes, because they don't want those early morning classes, Wed night attendance has been abysmal this year.

I'm old enough to remember when people said the same about CAA - too big, cavernous, dull. It was part of the reason they moved to Newark as it tied in with the opportune timing of a new arena being built. Now almost 20 years later we're hearing the same about the Rock. Oh boy.

There's 900 seats in the student section as per a member of the administration. 6K full time students.
