Though I'm not a betting man, 60-1 are great odds to drop on the Pirates.

The Nova -12 to 1
Butler - 25 to 1
Seton Hall - 60 to 1
Xavier - 75 to 1
Creighton - 75 to 1
Marquette - 100 to 1
PC - 100 to 1

That's quite a jump for The Johnnies. Anybody see them as an NCAA tournament team? (I could see it either way)

The thing about St John's is their talent always seems to be better than their record. At least as I see it.

They play too much street ball. Too much one on one. And they have attitude and not the good kind because I have seen them play often and so many times before, during or after a game they seem full of themselves.

There is no doubting SJU's talent this season., But I have to see if the sum of the parts equals or hopefully for them surpasses the whole before passing judgement.

I could see it either way too. I'll lean towards no but I wont' be shocked if they put it all together. The backcourt is NCAA tournament worthy, the front court still has questions. Yakwe taking a step back last year really hurt, he has the tools to be a force. Ahmed was the 4 man, but drifts away from the hoop. Marvin Clark should help after sitting out a year. Those 3 guys and Tariq Owens will dictate how they fare, I think.

Like Dan said, Ponds and Lovett have tantalizing skills but we need to see them put it all together in a team friendly concept before I crown them.

I view SJU as a potentially very dangerous team and if they became an NCAA tourney team it wouldn't come as a shock and if they didn't that wouldn't be a surprise either.

Love Providence's odds. They are way better than 100-1.

I think what you say Dan about "talent being better than record" was very true in the Lavin years, except for year 1 when Lavin had Mike Dunlap. We will see what happens under Mullin.

I'm wary of speculating on "attitude" and things like that from afar because I hate when other fans or message boards do that about our players. As an example, when D'Angelo Harrison was at SJU he got killed on message boards for other Big East schools for being a "punk" or a "thug" because of his tattoos, body language, etc. Well I met Harrison multiple times in the context of youth sports, and he was an intelligent, well spoken, and absolutely great kid. While he may have been a bit of a stallion at first at SJU (got suspended, I believe), he grew up.

SJU' biggest issue from what I saw last year and have read elsewhere is there defense, which was atrocious last season. They clean that up and they will have a good year.

St Johns had talent last year but lacked physicality, defense, rebounding and the maturity to play consistently. This year, they are all a year older (lost no players that really mattered) and add 2 very important transfers in Clark and Simon who were Top 50 HS players. They are both big, strong and are saying all the right things about bringing defense, rebounding and toughness to a team that lacked it last year.

I think they are a bubble team that will get in the NCAAs. Top to bottom they have as much talent as any BE team other than Nova.

Indiana is not in the class of Seton Hall this season. Classic example of betting on name recognition.
Sports Books routinely set odds based, in part, on "name recognition" and betting habits of fans. Classic example is UNLV listed at 300-1. The Books will get a lot of "local" action on that price with little or no expectation of having to pay out on that one. Think of the expression - "there's a sucker born every day". That's how the Books make a profit.
