Do you agree?

No point matters when taken out of context. In 1776 there was a different moral ground than in 2017. Just as there was when Jesus was nailed to the cross. Just as there was when the Civil War was fought. When Hitler rose to power. Nobody should ever say that slavery is right. But in the 1700's it was a different world that a President in the 1860's had to call out for what it was. Nobody should ever have supported Nazism. Does that mean you persecute every German. That everyone hated the Jews. Many did, and in hindsight and maybe even with a lot of foresight they were wrong. We need a context. On one hand Jesus said "forgive them for they know not what they have done". But in 2017 we know better than to march around in Klan hoods and carrying Swastikas. We know better than to hate someone because of the color of their skin. We know better. What bothers me most is that we still have people in this country who don't. Our President is one of them. And that is the shame that we as a Country will have to deal with. Political Correctness aside. It is just about that if we are an intelligent people, for some things we should just know better.

OK guys this is getting far off point from the original post. I'll keep this thread here for a short time so those that still want to comment know that the thread is going to be moved to the Life off the Ship board.

Racism is the dark side of a melting pot. The core problem was that the Confederacy was an insurgency. These were not American heroes. It was a traitorous movement that lost and was put down. But we allowed it to be a rallying point for generations, which was always odd to me. As if that historical period was the ongoing culture.

I don't have any problem if communities want to bring down reminders of that period. What the heck is it being celebrated for anyway? The historical narrative does not need a statue in a public park.

Monuments in public parks are different than sports teams logos. I hope we don't lose our heads with this.

What has our President said to indicate he is a racist. More fake news.

I am all for dumping the new Pirate and going back to the old Pirate. Trying to stay on topic here.

Yet we live in time where you have even elected officials defending communism and it's barely covered:

http://www.ocregister.com/2017/05/1...tate-workers-who-are-communist-party-members/

Communism resulted in 80-90 million deaths in the last 100 years.

A Missouri state senator calls for the assassination of the president and there has been no condemnation from the Democrat leaders in Congress.

So there is very selective morality and media coverage.

WTHeck is your thing with communism? Tried and failed for all to see. Some young person wears a T-shirt with the face of a communist and he's a cancer, rather than considering maybe that he's a kid with ideals but without yet enough knowledge and perspective.

This whole thread subject is not a slippery slope. (Things correct themselves when they get too silly. Meanwhile we have to suffer the horrible indignity of not using a few nouns, until such time as we all figure out what's truly mean and insulting to some people whose shoes we never walked in.)

No, this thread subject is not a slippery slope. It's a bicycle shed. A dog whistle bicycle shed.

Perhaps the most ignorant comment I've ever read here.

Communism is alive and well and repressing millions of people in China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, et al. And they will kill you if you don't obey.

Thankfully there's not a single nation on Earth headed by Nazis. It's a TINY fringe wherever it exists.

So you're threatened by any display or believer *in the U.S.*? You know, our free country? That's what your comments referred to, internal U.S. only, and so of course I was addressing what you actually said. Please no rhetorical tricks so you can demean my comment.

Has Trump created this or just ripped a band aid off of something that's been festering underneath the overly politically correct society we've become.

If the British were gracious in victory and saw the wisdom of bringing the colonies back into close relationship with the motherland, I think statues of Washington and Franklin and Hamilton et al would have been erected.

I don't think so.

William Wallace's entrails were removed while he was alive and burned. His head was placed on spike in London and the rest of his body was hacked into four pieces and sent to the four corners of England.

Wallace's statue at Sterling was erected after the Scot's won their independence again.

Had England won the war, all those you mentioned and more would have been hung for treason. Washington may have survived hanging given he was in uniform.
