The eye on college basketball podcast released a great episode on Friday where they review their Candid Coaches series and discuss NIL price tags and the portal. The series overall is fantastic. They interview over 100 coaches anonymously in exchange for honesty.

On Friday’s episode they focus on - “how much does the average high major starter cost in the portal?” They define high major as P5+BigEast.

I have linked the written article and the podcast below. Both are must read/listen for fans on this board. The podcast goes into more detail and adds some interesting perspective.

In summary, the coaches disclose that the average player asks for more than $200k but only gets about $200k. At a blue blood program that number would be closer to $350k.

This really puts things into perspective as to how competitive the recruiting landscape is. For instance, according to these coaches our current $400k matching campaign ($800k total) would fund the salaries of four starters for one season.
