Highland park. Legally obtained highpowered gun. people just trying to enjoy their holiday with family.

"“The horrific scene of some of the bodies is unspeakable for the average person. Having been a physician, I’ve seen things in ERs, you know, you do see lots of blood. But the bodies were literally — some of the bodies — it was an evisceration injury from the power of this gun and the bullets. There was another person who had an unspeakable head injury. Unspeakable,”"

America is a minute away from complete anarchy.

How could this happen? Assault weapons are illegal in Highland Park.

This is actually an improvement over last year. The only reason it is getting attention over the normal shootings in Chicago is because of the weapon. When handguns are used in black on black shootings, nobody raises a stink about it.

Chicago police said more than 50 people have been shot over the holiday weekend, including a 10-year-old boy.

CHICAGO -- Seventy one people were shot , eight fatally, in 4th of July holiday weekend shootings across the city, Chicago police said.

Last year, 19 people were killed and more than 100 people were shot over the long Fourth of July weekend.

Another horrific weekend in Chicago.

- Doesn't Illinois have some of the strictest gun laws. Unless you don't enforce them, what's the point?
- How does this kid purchase a gun legally? Why red flag laws are critical (and enforcement).
- He was apparently active on social media and posting disturbing stuff.
- What was his family situation? Let's wait to see what comes out, but I'm sure there's an issue or two there as well.

its because gang on gang violence vs someone shooting up innocent people at a public family event isnt exactly the same thing? pathetic you playing dumb like that and "cant see" the distinction. clutch harder my god.

NYC seems like it is under siege as well:

How could NYC not even keep Joey Chestnut protected??? How does someone get on stage and that close to him mid competition? Probably the only time in our lives we will see someone eating 6 hot dogs per minute and kicking the crap out of someone at the same time.

Children and innocent people are getting murdered in the cross-fire of these gang related and other shootings. Check your facts...try harder.

not nearly close. especially if you look at the rate. it definitely happens, but its a bit different than someone showing up to innocent gatherings with a high powered weapon intending on roasting the unassuming victims. like shooting up a school or parade.

i should try harder? huh?? waiting for the day this hits close to home.

It's definitely different. Except to those burying their loved ones.

Not nearly? 31 dead, 174 injured (10-17 age group) in Philly alone. How is that different? Innocent children getting shot by people that have no consideration for human life.

No one is in denial that we have a problem, but there is very little being done to solve the issues that contribute mostly to the carnage. It's all around us...not safe anywhere.

We should probably resister and track anyone with face tattoos.

Yes, I’m kidding. And I have multiple, my brother is pretty covered, but it takes an interesting decision making process when you get ink on your face.

Illinois does have very strict gun laws, but Indiana which is about a 40 minute drive from downtown Chicago, is one of the easiest places in the U.S. to buy a gun.

This is very, very, very simple, require universal background checks, prohibit people from buying a gun out of state and pass a test in your home state that shows you have the ability to use a gun in a safe and responsible manner

The argument that one state has strict gun laws and therefore it shows how ineffectual strict gun laws are is just plain wrong. We do not have a national standard and thus you can go to the neighboring state to go purchase guns that skirt the strict gun law state. That is what happens all over the country.

while I agree with your suggestions, we need to do even more. National registration similar to Codis that has individual gun ownership information as well as ballistic ID.

It's been confirmed that he bought the guns in Chicagoland. I guess we need to know how that happened. What good is a law if no one enforces it.

None of it is simple. All of the above should be fine, doesn't infringe on any 2A rights but would not have stopped this or just about any other of the shootings.

Social media is the single worst invention of my lifetime. 100 years from now (if we even make it as a society) it will be looked back on as the point of no return.

Illinois has red flag laws, but are worthless if no one petitions.

How does a 19 year old who had threatened to commit suicide, and then threaten to kill others (and had knives confiscated) have the ability to buy at least five guns right after doing so? Did his parents know he had purchased them after that incident? This kid should never been allowed to buy one gun, much less five or more. Reports of disturbing stuff on social media.

Great. Keep talking. We’ve seen this type of press conference for about 10-15 years. We’ve been talking about this issue for years. At some point let’s do something about it, let’s see how it works, then let’s talk about making what we tried better. Talking about it has gotten us nowhere for years. This world is all about words, let’s have a debate, can you believe what so and so put out on Twitter. It’s as if nobody still believes actions speak louder than words.

Exactly. “I tweeted about it” or posting a pithy meme is really taking a stand and actually doing something. If you feel that strongly, do something.

Another athlete that doesn’t understand the role of SCOTUS.

These are well intentioned laws but are ineffective. Red flag laws are useful when people around a person actually speak out and notify law enforcement. But this only works when they actually know the person is mentally ill and dangerous. So many people just stay silent and so many just don't really know Yes, we do not want mentally ill people having firearms. But the real problem is how to prevent it. These laws don’t do the job.

Btw, I think the media does an injustice to the cause of banning assault weapons by trying to scrub the internet of the actual killings.
Anyone who actually watches these attacks with assault weapons, it will change their mind.

Bottom line is we need to get guns out of the hands of criminals and those that are mentally ill. I was listening to a news report regarding gun crime in NYC last year. Something like over 4,000 arrests with ILLEGAL guns. Half were pled down from felonies and virtually all were released without bail. That's insane. What's the point of background checks if this kid was able to buy a half dozen guns after threatening suicide and then threatening to kill others with knives. His parents should be put on trial along with him. Why can't we have a red flag law that denies someone the right to purchase a gun if they do either of those things. Clearly, there is a record of both.

We can't have well-intentioned and ineffective laws. We need laws that are based on data that are enforced to the letter of the law.

What’s an illegal gun? If a gun is lawfully purchased in Virginia and transported to NYC. Is that gun unlawful ? Well according to NY it is. But it wasn’t purchased illegally.

This patchwork of state gun laws is ridiculous and makes it difficult to control. There is no tracking of guns it’s a free for all. Strict gun law states are rendered ineffective due to neighboring states which make it easy to purchase guns and loopholes like private party sales.

Moreover, there are plenty of people who have no criminal record but are criminals and violent. And many more that profit off this.

Thanks for not responding to any of my points.

The classic states rights debate. I fall on the side of the states making their own laws (as with abortion). I have no problem with a "patchwork of state gun laws."

Sickening for that little boy and all those that lost someone. Im so tired of this happening. A world full of freaks taking innocent lives
