When SHU, Yankees, Giants lose it sticks with me for a while. When the win I'm very happy. If it weren't plastered in the news, I wouldn't have even known they played. Just to give you an idea how little I care about soccer in general. Just hate the anti patriotism by some of today's athletes.

Exactly. I’m happy they won because I’m happy when our country wins anything. And it’s admirable to use one’s platform to promote positive change. But there is a time and place and way to go about it. I found the USWT could have exercised better judgment in that respect. Fighting for better pay or equal pay is great, but we all know that will ultimately be dictated by economic factors and market forces. But creating “noise” that will only divide rather than promote change is pointless and, frankly, comes across as one trying to promote their own “brand” rather than the underlying message.

I didn’t understand why Alex Morgan had to bring sex into the backlash she received about the England goal celebration. That had nothing to do with sex. We see men in all major professional sports get criticized for excessive celebration; heck we critique other college players that do it to us sometimes.

I thought Rapinoe erred in making this WC run partially about our President and her personal views instead of these amazing woman coming together to dominate the world stage again in sport.

She made it political by not honoring the flag or country. You're representing the country, show respect.

Rapinoe’s lack of respect for the country she played for is unforgivable.
Her objections are no different than the 68 olympics, any pro athlete in this country that has displayed some type of protest...newsflash had the nfl never entered into accepting money from the us military I don't think there would be outcry for pro athletes (nfl players) most of whom are aftican-american men who come from poverty level environments as a 20-22 year upbringing

The first amendment wasn't constructed for subjective interpretation.

That’s the paradox of it, isn’t it? Rappinoe has the right to speak her mind, but others have a right to criticize her viewpoints when she seeks a public forum

Totally fair but it doesn’t tarnish the women’s victory so I am not going to get behind such comments

Equal pay for different sports is a ridiculous premise. Hockey players don't make as much as NBA players. WNBA don't make nearly as much. It's determined by overall revenue generated by the event. Men's World cup generates 100's of times the revenue the Women's does. Actual TV worldwide ratings for men in 2018 were estimated at 3.5 BILLION while women hit a record in 2019 of 22.5 million. To say they deserve equal pay is ridiculous. Now to say the country should provide the same funding to support them would be more fair but unless I'm missing something, that's not what they are arguing.

Agree 100%. If you think you are entitled to more in a profession demand it and market forces will usually provide the answer.

The first amendment is about the government suppression of speech. When employees speak out, it is about the employer/employee relationship and whatever binds that construct. I speak in public forums quite often for a living and am very careful what I say on hot button or even semi-controversial social or political issues because I don’t want to put my employer in the position of hurting its business. Whether my viewpoint is right or wrong, I understand there is a line and that my employer would be well within its rights to do something if I stray too far. There is no constitutionally protected right as to speech in the workplace although some employee speech is protected by labor laws. This was the point that was constantly glossed over with the general public in the Kapernick stuff. NFL players collectively bargain certain rights of employment and individual teams have rules within those constraints. If a team mandates a player not protest during the anthem for certain reason - likely because it will upset certain of their customers (ie, fans) - they are within their right to do so. Just as teams are free to do the opposite and allow players to proceed accordingly.

Why is this on a seton hall basketball board? Go talk about Rapinoe in the appropriate forum.

Admit that I have been following the WWC games more than off-field issues, but...

Aren't the women claiming they should be paid and funded the same as the U.S. men's team? The latter has not medaled in WC since the 1930's. Can the average fan name one player on the U.S. men's team?

Also, [again] I thought the off-field politics could have been a huge distraction. Kudos to Megan for standing up for her beliefs AND then walking the walk by winning it all.

It's not anti-patriotism. Just as flag-waving in and of itself isn't patriotism. The beauty of America is freedom...not simply the symbols of freedom like the flag or the anthem but the freedom itself. The freedom that allows us to express our opinions without fear of government silencing or punishing us. For sure, there are people who will harshly criticize actions like those of Rapinoe etc. That's to be expected. But she is simply practicing the most basic of American values...freedom of expression. And to me that is patriotism in pure form.

Happy the USWNT won. I only watched the US games so I can't speak for any team they didn't play, but I thought Lavelle was their best player. Maybe Ertz if not her.

In today's climate there is going to be a lot of hyperbole and uneducated statements coming out regarding the USMNT vs. the USWNT, equal pay, etc., but none of that should diminish the women's accomplishment. Back-to-back World Cup titles is an incredible achievement.

The market forces argument is valid, but not in this case. Both the men and women are playing for the US Soccer Federation. They sanction all the events and collect and distribute all the money received from advertising, merchandise, and attendance, etc.

They have the same "jobs" for the same "company." Pay should be the same.

If they are talking about base pay I agree with them. They generate more revenue for USSF than the men. If they ate referring to FIFA prize money they don't have a leg to stand on.

God forgives all things, we should try to forgive too. With that said if she doesn't like playing for the United States of America go play elsewhere. She's a very talented player. I'm sure many countries would have loved to have her on their team. The United States of America is not perfect, we know this. Sports is a great platform for change. I just don't get the idea of being disrespectful to get your point across. The way you create change is by persuading people. Kneeling does nothing to help the power of persuasion. It works against it.
