Mother Nature apparently ruined Rob Gronkowski’s “Kick of Destiny.”

On Sunday, the retired All-Pro tight end missed a field goal attempt while starring in the first-ever live Super Bowl commercial with FanDuel Sportsbook.

Gronkowski, who filmed the commercial at an undisclosed location in Phoenix, Ariz., later blamed powerful winds for shifting the direction of the football at the last second.

“I am not one to make excuses, but if you were out here and felt this wind, you would know why I missed, and if there was no wind, it would’ve went right down the middle,” Gronkowski said in a Twitter video by FanDuel. “But it’s OK, because I don’t make excuses, but I was just letting you know.”

During a Monday appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up & Adams,” Gronkowski further explained that Mother Nature shut down his plans for a successful kick.

“I felt the confidence that it was going through no matter what and then I looked up and it was soaring and then all of a sudden I swear, a wind gust came up there,” Gronkowski told host Kay Adams. “Mother Nature was like ‘no, no, no, no, no, Gronk, you’re not scoring again in the Super Bowl. You have too many touchdowns in the Super Bowl, let people catch up to you. Let people catch up in points to you, you don’t need field goal points too.’

“Mother Nature just sent this powerful wind when the ball was about to go right through the uprights, right down the middle — you can even watch it, it’s going directly through. Then all of a sudden, whoop… just swooped the football and it went wide left the tiniest bit.”

Gronkowski’s commercial aired in the third quarter of Kansas City’s eventual 38-35 win over the Eagles in Super Bowl 2023.

The four-time Super Bowl winner, Gronkowski attempted the kick from 25 yards out, according to Sports Business Journal, which is eight yards closer than an NFL extra-point attempt.

“I was 5-for-5 on rehearsal day,” he said. “I felt great warming up I was really loose when it came to the third quarter… I had a lot of practice runs before to keep me loose and feeling good,” Gronkowski said. “I was not nervous one single bit, I felt like I had it for sure.”

Although Gronkowski missed the kick, FanDuel Sportsbook still honored its promotion that promised to give away $10 million in free bonus bets to fans if his kick attempt was successful.

Now, Gronkowski is planning his next challenge.

“I’m gonna have to have a redemption one day,” he said. “I’m gonna have to do something. I’m not sure what it’s gonna be yet, but I’m going to have to do another, something of destiny, where I can do it and accomplish something for America. I gotta make up for it and I’m going to, but we’ll see down the future what it’s going to be.”

Conrad Dobler, one of NFL’s dirtiest players, dead at 72

By Michael Blinn

Legendary Cardinals guard Conrad Dobler, known as the NFL’s dirtiest player during his era, died at the age of 72 on Monday, the team announced.

No cause of death was given.

Over a 10-year NFL career, Dobler embraced his role as protector, joining forces with the likes of future Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf to form one of the best offensive lines in history on the “Cardiac Cardinals.” In 1975, they surrendered just eight sacks — then a league record — with Dobler embracing the task of keeping QB Jim Hart upright, no matter the means.

“I’ll do anything I can get away with to protect my quarterback,” Dobler told Sports Illustrated in 1977, employing illegal tactics like holding, eye-gouging, leg-whipping and biting among them.

A fifth-round pick out of Wyoming in 1972 — undersized at 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds — Dobler made three straight Pro Bowls from 1975-77 with St. Louis before spending the final two seasons of his career with the Saints and Bills.

His role as a villain was one he embraced, starring in a 1987 Miller Lite commercial that dubbed him “Famous Troublemaker” as he riled up fans debating the beer’s famous “Tastes great/Less filling” tag line.

Our hearts go out to the family, friends and former teammates of Conrad Dobler,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said. “He was the kind of tough, physical and fierce player that you love to line up with as a teammate and hate to line up against as an opponent. On the field, Conrad was a big reason for the success of the Cardiac Cards of the 1970s. Away from it, he brought authentic joy and caring to everyone who had the privilege of being his friend and that is what I will remember most.”

Dobler, who passed in Pueblo, Colo., is survived by six children and 12 grandchildren.

Roger Goodell-Chris Jones embrace at Super Bowl 2023 baffles Twitter: ‘Weird af’

By Jaclyn Hendricks

One of the most buzzed-about moments of Super Bowl 2023 unfolded after the game.

As the Chiefs and their loved ones celebrated on the field at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., following Kansas City’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell joined in the festivities with the new world champs, including defensive tackle Chris Jones.

In a video currently circulating on Twitter, Jones and Goodell can be seen sharing a long embrace, with the Chiefs superstar even lifting the commissioner off of the ground. As the duo’s warm exchange continues, Jones appears to be told, “I don’t care how you hit the quarterback,” with some on social media speculating if the message came from Goodell.

“I’m not a conspiracy theorist but damn Goodell is not doing himself any favours lol,” one viewer remarked, according to The Spun.

Elsewhere on Twitter, one NFL fan expressed, “When the script goes as planned,” while another opined of the league, “Rigged confirmed.” One user also said, “This is weird af.”

This year’s Super Bowl wasn’t without controversy, as Eagles cornerback James Bradberry was flagged for holding against Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster late in the fourth quarter. The penalty gave Kansas City a fresh set of downs and ultimately, the opportunity to put the game away with a field goal.

Michael Barkann, an Eagles analyst for NBC Sports Philadelphia, lambasted the penalty on Bradberry, calling it “utter complete bulls–t.”

Bradberry addressed the call postgame and said “it was a holding.”

“I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide,” he said.

The Chiefs would go on to win the game, 38-35, and claim their second Super Bowl title in the past four seasons.
