Terrible News - SHU shut down 14 days Covid positive player

Anyone know whose rule the 14 days is? Cal's basketball team basically "tested out" of this in 7 days because they registered no new positives.

If it's a New Jersey rule, or a university rule, or a Big East rule, that's going to be trickier.

First game isn't until 11/27. If they quarantine now, the healthy players can still make it, right?!
In theory the positive player would be able to make it too with two consec days of negative tests
SHU was to play 11/25 vs winthrop

The interview came out yesterday, but was probabl done over the weekend.
In it its inferred that it was Monday
Now perhaps he taped and then tests came back positive yes that is plausible and maybe they had to test again to confirm positives

I have taken the Vault test which is a sample of Saliva every 2nd week at my job, starting next week its a weekly test required of any personnel that steps in the front door atleast 1 time a week.

There have been 2 positives since early september at the site

test will prob be positive for a long time after that person passes the virus

Antibodies yes but testing positive for covid not the case
i could be wrong but theres no way to tell the positive covid test isnt the antibodies.

i know a guy who got a much needed surgery for a double broken ankle moved for about 3 weeks because he kept testing positive for the covid he had 2 weeks prior.

im not sure what the protocol is

2 consecutive days of negatives on a covid test, saliva or nasal swab

well if we have to pull out of the Lousville MTE, I'm sure our scarlet neighbors would be willing to help us replace one of the games. Heck, since they apparently want to play us so bad maybe they'll play us twice to replace both!

right so we agree that the antibodies can make a test positive for a while. without knowing that distinction for certain that rule sounds like someone could go a long time without participating

Word is that there’s some significant breakouts in the dorms on campus. Hope everybody gets through it without any significant issues. The good news is that the vast majority of college kids get through COVID relatively easily.

Guys I really don't know how the basketball season is going to work this year with all these players at all these universities living in the dorms. I feel all we need is one superspreader event that's tied back to a game and they'll pull the plug on anything but bubble scenarios.

Two members of Seton Hall basketball program test positive for coronavirus
By Zach Braziller

Seton Hall’s basketball program hit the pause button Monday following two positive COVID-19 tests, a source told The Post. The school announced the pause Wednesday, but declined to offer any further details. The Pirates are scheduled to open the season in two weeks on Nov. 25 against Winthrop in the Louisville multi-team event.

A source said the two positive tests were for one player and another member of the program. The NCAA has recommended team-wide 14-day quarantine for a single positive test, which Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said teams in the league will follow. During that time, players are expected to isolate, though they can work out on their own. If Seton Hall follows the NCAA guidelines, it would be able to resume practices Nov. 23, two days before the scheduled opener.

Seton Hall said it is following all state, local and university guidelines in response to the positive cases.

“Our number one concern is that we keep everyone safe and healthy,” coach Kevin Willard said in a statement. “Since we returned to campus in July, we have been diligent in following protocols and rigorously tested with no positives until this point.

“But as we’ve seen throughout the country and here locally, COVID-19 cases are on the rise and unfortunately it has reached our program. We will continue to monitor the situation and we look forward to resuming our preparation for the season when it is safe to do so.”

Seton Hall is the fourth Big East program to be forced to pause workouts, following Villanova, Marquette and UConn, which is currently in isolation.

Because of rising cases, Seton Hall announced earlier in the day that it was going to entirely online courses for the remainder of the semester effective immediately.

Seton Hall's men's basketball program has paused all team activities due to positive COVID-19 test results, the school announced Wednesday.

"Our number one concern is that we keep everyone safe and healthy," coach Kevin Willard said. "Since we returned to campus in July, we have been diligent in following protocols and rigorously tested with no positives until this point. But as we've seen throughout the country and here locally, COVID-19 cases are on the rise and unfortunately it has reached our program. We will continue to monitor the situation and we look forward to resuming our preparation for the season when it is safe to do so."

Seton Hall is expected to open its season against Winthrop on Nov. 25 before facing Louisville on Nov. 27, with both games occurring in Louisville's multiteam event, the Wade Houston Tipoff Classic.

The school's announcement doesn't specify how long the entire program will quarantine, but the NCAA's basketball guidelines suggest a 14-day quarantine for all Tier 1 individuals as soon as another Tier 1 individual tests positive. Other Big East programs with positive tests this fall, namely Marquette, have shut down for 14 days.

A 14-day shutdown would put Seton Hall's first two games in doubt.

At the Big East's virtual media day last month, Willard was asked about the prospect of having a full season with the 14-day quarantine recommendation for one positive test.

"It's probably going to be almost impossible," Willard said. "It just doesn't make sense to me, if we're going to test so much, why we're not using the tests to keep moving forward."

Not one college student, not just athletes, has been hospitalized or died in Fall semester in NJ.

Is there COVID hospitalization data that's broken down by age out there? All I can find is number of total hospitalizations each week, but not sorted out by demographics.

I don't see any way that they can complete a season with the mandatory 14 day quarantine period for the entire program. It's excessive and is going to completely derail conference play once teams are playing 2-3 times per week.

Look at European soccer as a model - if a player tests positive they are forced to quarantine for 14 days, but the entire club does not have to and they can go on and continue to play games. They've been doing this since May and there have been no major issues to date.

There was an interesting study in the late 90's I believe showing that college kids living on campus actually had a drop in their residence or lower immune function. The theory was that drinking beer and 100 spicy Buffalo wings and 2am disco fries from the diner was lowering immune function compared to mommas cooking and getting to bed early for school.
It used to be thought immunity were cells that controlled themselves with little influence from us, but now we know that the nervous system and diet play a vital role in immune health and branches of science like psychoneuroimmunology have shown our behaviors greatly influence how well or poorly our immune system works.
So to sum it up, SHU basketball players who have a regular circadian sleep wake schedule, eat properly and are physical fit should have much higher resistance to infection than really anyone else. For this reason , I was promoting the idea of the COVID party in the summer and have 13 players with immunity to it going into the season.

Can’t see any way that we will have a season without massive interruptions. Even though the vaccine will be out by January basketball players will be way down on the priority list so they won’t get it until after the season is over. Combine that with flu season and these full team 14 day quarantine periods… Forget it.

I wrote here in September (or whenever Gavitt announced his plans for the season) that the 14 day quarantine would be the major obstacle to a season. Here we are. Four BE teams have already had to shut down at various times.
