Seton Hall’s basketball program hit the pause button Monday following two positive COVID-19 tests, a source told The Post. The school announced the pause Wednesday, but declined to offer any further details. The Pirates are scheduled to open the season in two weeks on Nov. 25 against Winthrop in the Louisville multi-team event.
A source said the two positive tests were for one player and another member of the program. The NCAA has recommended team-wide 14-day quarantine for a single positive test, which Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said teams in the league will follow. During that time, players are expected to isolate, though they can work out on their own. If Seton Hall follows the NCAA guidelines, it would be able to resume practices Nov. 23, two days before the scheduled opener.
Seton Hall said it is following all state, local and university guidelines in response to the positive cases.
“Our number one concern is that we keep everyone safe and healthy,” coach Kevin Willard said in a statement. “Since we returned to campus in July, we have been diligent in following protocols and rigorously tested with no positives until this point.
“But as we’ve seen throughout the country and here locally, COVID-19 cases are on the rise and unfortunately it has reached our program. We will continue to monitor the situation and we look forward to resuming our preparation for the season when it is safe to do so.”
Seton Hall is the fourth Big East program to be forced to pause workouts, following Villanova, Marquette and UConn, which is currently in isolation.
Because of rising cases, Seton Hall announced earlier in the day that it was going to entirely online courses for the remainder of the semester effective immediately.
