Terrible News - SHU shut down 14 days Covid positive player

1827 people currently hospitalized with COVID in NJ. Earlier this year that number was 3 - 4 times that much for months and we got through it.
And they are hospitalized for 1/10th of the time they were seven months ago. Most of those on partial divert status are small hospitals with limited number of beds to begin with like St. Michaels and East Orange General.

We are inevitably headed toward conference-only bubbles. The only way they can get through this would be to have students at all campuses move to remote learning for the winter. That would squash a lot of it but that’s just not happening at enough schools to protect the players from all the kids in the dorms. Shutting down programs for 2 weeks when a team manager get Covid is not only ridiculous - but unsustainable. They need to pivot away from that and just do what college football is doing or don’t even bother. Just start planning the bubbles now.

Here's an idea, stop letting a virus that has a morality rate for people their age of .01% rule our lives and just play and not worry about it. Not to mention the just approved the Eli Lilly treatment.

Not sure what KW and other college coaches were thinking when booking Louisville games. Taking kids on planes and hotels would only increase risk. Stay local. Bus games only for December. Maybe conference only is way to go now.

Listen I’m with you. But the reason we are dealing with is one reason only...lawyers. In the off chance this kills a player the university is facing a hailstorm. It’s pure liability.

Yup, sadly that is the case. But NYShoreGuy told me I was crazy for blaming lawyers....lol.

Politicians, too. I used to think the election outcome would impact our views and response to this. I’m not sure anymore. The cynic in me wonders if this is going to be leveraged further into rolling out certain wish list items, like UBI. I hate that I think like this but unfortunately it seems all the more accurate.

I see this as the only viable way to have some semblance of a season. Question is where would you send a Big East bubble or if they decided to do away with Conference bubbles and switch to regionals?

Disappointing this hasn’t been worked out by now.

I dont think a conf like the big east can afford it. Jay Wright this week was quoted that the costs are really big.

Over 3,000 people with Covid have been admitted to the hospital and 1,100 people have died of covid per day since the election. Apparently the virus was nonpartisan.

They should have done that months ago, but I hope they do it for the short term to aid in our economic recovery as those who are most vulnerable are able to be vaccinated.

Would be interesting to see what that all looks like.
Hard not to think the season is just going to fall apart without some type of bubble environment.

The virus is most certainly nonpartisan. The response not necessarily so. The economy was starting to recover fine as we were opening up again. The answer to me is not simply cutting more checks across the board to everyone (like UBI) - or to people who are still gainfully employed but make less than a certain amount - like those stimulus checks. Help out the small businesses and people who work for them, where warranted, but figure out ways to move forward.

Willard correctly noted that when kids are on campus, the risk is there. Now that the non-athletes will be off-campus (not soon enough, IMHO), the risk will drop way off going forward. These teams - and everyone around them - need to have a bunker mentality if they want to get their seasons in.

I respect that view. If pinpointing and targeting exactly where money was needed was easy, I would tend to agree.

In my opinion, to ensure quick economic recovery, I would rather give money to people that don't need it than miss out on the ones that do. The people who don't really need the money would hopefully still decide to spend it somewhere to help support the economy.

Yeah, seems that is the best we can hope for.

Within what seemed like minutes yesterday you had Wright saying there wont be bubbles, and Dan Hurley saying most likely will be bubbles. Amazing they don't have at least a similar message yet.

Everyone is still trying to figure out how to get a season in. The NCAA can provide guidelines but its up to the 30+ conferences to decide how to conduct their seasons. Remember, when Gavitt made his announcements in September, progress on the Covid front was looking positive. Over the past few weeks everything started going downhill and the results are clear to see: everyone is scrambling even more than a month ago to adapt to the new reality.

Sure there is Some liability, but you really think it’s only that and nothing to do with the fact that people can die from this.

That’s what the liability is. The chance it could kill someone. Albeit unlikely thats why the lawyers are present.

Hospitals are definitely seeing an uptick in admissions but the length of stay for Covid patients is only 3-4 days. Back in the spring it was 45 to 90 days. Essentially, it’s business as usual. Full speed ahead on elective surgeries and no panic with PPE. Hospitals are just returning to about 95 to 100% of pre-Covid volume and procedures.

Actually, the LOS varies widely; if they get Remdesvir, that is a 6 dose treatment...usually a minimum 5 days; of course if they go to ICU LOS much longer.

BUT, definitely much shorter than in spring....have many more tools in the toolbox to treat this now than we did then.

So your point is a good one.

BUT another different aspect....goal this time is to NOT shut down elective procedures...which of course will mean many other patients in the hospital that simply were not here in the Spring. So, a little give and take.

Also on the good news front, the wearing of masks is helping tamp down the flu season....which is good news.

Lets see,....getting thru the holidays will be the major hurdle

Per Patch.com:

NEW JERSEY – At least six New Jersey hospitals have been on partial "divert" status as they deal with too many coronavirus cases and other issues amid the second-wave of the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Divert" status usually means that hospitals send notice to incoming ambulances to bring patients to other local medical care facilities.

A hospital goes on diversion when there are not enough beds or staff available in the emergency room, or the hospital itself, to adequately care for patients.

FWIW

Keep in mind, often those "divert" periods are in 4-hour tranches...and are often service-specific (Behavioral health (a common one, unfortunately), ICU etc). So while this is certainly something to monitor, in and of itself is not an alarm bell. Yet

I hate to see this, but if they want to get through this season, stop the asymptomatic testing. We're not doing it in the high schools, and that's the ONLY way HS football has mostly gotten through the season. When a player gets sick/has symptoms, they get tested, and if positive, the contact tracing and team shutdown begins.

So why are they working to stop the flu but not this? Why are "cases" skyrocketing in places that have had mask mandates for months? You can't have it both ways.

Makes no sense since we just got guys infected without travel

the issue is are shutdowns going to stop this virus?

Human behavior is the cause of the increase.

Everywhere I go, people are all wearing masks.

Well that’s good, but obviously things are different now. Kids are back in school. People are dining out, and having larger indoor gatherings etc... people are behaving differently.

And yes, recent political rallies and celebrations are certainly contributory to the recent spikes.

Lots of studies out there that show masks, even cloth masks, reduce the amount of virus you spread and the velocity of the output. Masks didn’t become less effective over time. They are not 100% effective, Or even close to it really, but they are an improvement and will increase the amount of time you can be near someone who is infected before you take in an infectious dose.

I was in South Florida (Tarpon Springs area) from Mid May to Mid June and not many wearing masks. of course this before FL blew up with tons of out of state people!

Florida handled its summer surge quite well and now has most things open with only a moderate rise in infections. A model for the rest of the country.

Kids have been in school for almost 3 months

what’s the point?

I wouldn’t say “model“. Not sure if we have yet to find a model

people are just going to get sick, peaks and valleys. mask or no mask. mask generally speaking very obviously helps.

I laughed reading about something like Covid fatigue or some kind of fatigue- it’s related to people just letting their guard down-laughed because it’s true.

Ruining a young adults college hoops season with auto two wk sit outs is beyond crazy. Today I couldn’t believe it got to this and I guess I was asleep to not notice this rule came out.

stay healthy everyone
