Retired army officer sent me the book as he knows I have an interest and respect for history and our military.

The book provides great insight into why Trump selected Hegseth as Secretary and why he will continue to stand behind him. But even if Hegseth did something egregious, 90% of his work has been completed already in the first hundred days and my guess is the vast majority of rank-and-file military are applauding his actions.

Whether someone is Left, right or independent- Hegseth is a loser who should not be in that position. He was chosen because he was on Fox and loved Trump.

He was chosen to clean house in the military, which he’s pretty much done.

A house cleaning that was long overdue

And the results have been positive thus far. Recruitment is up significantly since the election. Hegseth has long been a proponent of one set of standards (rather than lowering the overall standards or having two sets - one for men and one for women. Being a soldier should be outcomes focused, which the military had deviated.
Those that supported the DEI initiatives didn't like him speaking out. At the end of the day we need a top flight military force but impediments needed to be removed.

Measure success as are we enlisting more soldiers that can meet and exceed one set of standards.

Virtually every DEI and woke leader has been purged. Milley was the worst.

The next target will be the defense contractors. 80% of the generals who have retired over the last 10 years are now serving on the boards or consulting with defense contractors or their lobbyists. Do you think Hegseth is going to look at that favorably? He supported a 10-year moratorium post retirement on taking any of those jobs.

Was the alternative someone who was qualified but unwilling to clean house, or could they have nominated someone who could have accomplished the goals AND have not been a talk show host that shares war plans with friends and family?

Don’t know. Hegseth experienced the changes in standards, woke policies and I’m sure having a recognizable media/public presence certainly helped.

He’s essentially accomplished the objective and recruiting is up. He’s certainly not perfect and has made some mistakes, but if the rank and file of the military feel our defense is stronger than I’m okay.

December 2024 was the highest December enlistment in 15 years and the administration rightfully touted that. but it was less than August 2024. I'm sure there is a segment of people who signed up because of Trump winning but enlistment was up in 2024 and on pace to exceed fiscal year goals because of a new training facility in 2022 and an additional 1,000+ recruiters in 2023. Seems disingenuous to give all credit to Trump / Hegseth here.

Point being that we didn't need someone who is unqualified for the position. We could have have someone qualified who respected rules and regulations and still have been where we are today.

The numbers continue to be strong and we can sit back and see how it plays out. Hegseth embodies the warrior mentality and who the target demographic is for the military. The woke policies and different standards were a big problem. So more recruits and a stronger military.

Trump trusted Hegseth to clean house and eliminate the DEI initiatives and he did that. Hegseth has certainly made mistakes but we can debate whether someone else would have ripped the bandaid off so quickly and effectively. I’m not suggesting he was the best choice, but he has accomplished what Trump (and he) wanted.

Does the book give any insight into why Trump used al his power and all his skills to avoid the draft when the US was fighting a war, needed all men on deck, and he was of age.

Equating Don Trump IN ANY WAY with the word warrior is almost as ridiculous as those pictures of Trump with the muscles bulging.

Nope, and the book was written before Trump was elected.

Trump is no warrior. Hegseth never claims he is.

Trump is the elected President and you can take what you want from the book, but pretty much everything Hegseth identifies for necessary change in the military in the book, has now been implemented.

Yet you post non-stop stream of consciousness from left wing talking heads on a daily basis. Hold yourself to the same standard before you go after others.

I posted here years ago how FOX News was an bad development for the USA. Yes, the media was left leaning. But we have had three runaway races in my lifetime and Nixon and Reagan won 2 of them. And now the pres rates the media simply on how favorable (I mean fair) they are to him. Where did we read about that before?

Conservs watch FOX or something further right if they wish. They watch the news for hours and learn the other side hates America and them and wants to take away their freedoms.

And liberals watch a left leaning media outlet for too long each day as well, and are told that the other side hates America and them and wants to take away their freedoms.

And we wonder why we cant get along.

And the Internet deciding what links we want based on what links we picked yesterday just makes me hate the media and the internet lol.

Hesgeth is a joke. He is so over his head. But what do you expect when u put in a national guardsman who never led any organization. It’s like promoting a Sgt ina large city police force to chief except times that by a 1000.

Fox News came along because there was an opportunity to make money by being biased in the other direction. If people trusted the news in the first place there would’ve been no market for Fox News

Roger Ailes was a media consultant to republicans...became president of cnbc, launched americas talking (anyone remember this) then it sunsetted when msnbc launched but ailes was gone because he may have said something awful about david zaslav. Murdoch comes up with fnc and ailes slides right in.

Pre 1996 do you feel cable news and broadcast news was not trustworthy?

Worth a watch is Turning Point: Vietnam. Three consecutive Presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon), that escalated, mismanaged, deceived and lied to the American public. Westmoreland and McNamara manipulated and orchestrated America’s involvement in a war where we slaughtered civilians and children daily….estimated to be up to one third of the casualties. Free fire zones were a license to kill innocents indiscriminately. We dropped more bombs in Indo China during the war then we did in WW2.

And the press was also complicit. They all went along with the lies except for a handful. Hundreds of reporters were there and repeated what they were told at the daily read outs and never questioned the body counts or what soldiers were telling them except for a few. The photographer who took all the photos of the Mei Li massacre sat on them for a year and only came forward when one of the soldiers turned whistle blower.

Morley Safer was one who stood up and when Westmoreland called the President of CBS to demand he be fired, he was denied. And this was before news became a profit center. Probably the start of the seeds of distrust in the media.

What I feel is irrelevant. The fact there was a demand for it is all that matters. Second I don’t think I watched cable news until the past 10 years. Pre 1996 when I did watch the news it was just to get the local stuff mainly from cbs or abc. And if I remember correctly CNN had the sports ticker at the bottom. Only reason I watched was to get orioles scores or other out of town scores I was interested in. Once I got the score I switched.

Startup NewsNation gets the highest rating for “least biased”, yet they barely have an audience of 100k although growing by double-digits. I just want to see news and form my own opinions so it works for me. On the “editorial” end, Gutfeld and Maher are thought provoking and make me laugh.

For cable and network news I would ask “why?”. Why does FOX continue to dwarf the other cable news networks and dominate the top rated shows (18 of 20)? Why are next generations tuning out network news? Why are podcasts becoming more influential?
