The bill to ban TikTok passed both houses of Congress overwhelmingly and was signed into law by Biden. And now they're just not going to do it?

This guy used to call TikTok "an arm of the communists." Now he says they're working to "keep TikTok going." What's the deal?

Biden is washing his hands of the issue because it is very unpopular.
Trump has pledged to save it, so he is kicking the issue over to Trump.

The ban is ridiculous though. I don't think they're afraid of security or privacy because there are many other Chinese apps they are not going after. This seems to be more about having more power over the entities where information is being shared.

Republicans figured out where people are and found ways to message them. They did a FAR better job than democrats on that front.
Tiktok was part of that for sure.

Donald Trump the sage political policy master with this perspicacious insight: TikTok is popular.

Meanwhile you've got the Democrats:

Exactly. It’s not that the republicans were geniuses here, but Dems were just inept. Kind of handicapped because Harris was too transparently fake for social media.

National security threat.

They collect the same data every other social media app collects, and they would get pulled from the App Store if there was something in there that could violate rules or potentially laws. They moved the storage of data to oracle mitigating the risk of access of that data from other countries. A text message with a fake link is a much bigger security risk than an app vetted by Apple.

I’d buy the argument that they could potentially show you videos they want you to see and block ones they don’t but if that starts happening, users will be turned off and move away from the app.

Personally I think it’s more that the US government wants the ability to influence content and they don’t have as much leverage to do so with TikTok. They know they’ll have more power if the ownership is in the US.

Plus, there are many other Chinese apps allowed in the US. The fact that we didn’t move to ban them all makes me think it is more about the content than security.

oh no, think of the influencers!!

There are millions of people who have used TikTok to build an audience for their brand/business. It would be a shame if they lost that.

Meta spent the most lobbying money they ever spent to try and get it banned, and it was voted on by members of congress who hold investments in Meta. It’s insane that we have no law against that.

The security concerns are overstated, and they switched it to be about being worried about propaganda instead. Something that isn’t really happening on the platform and there have been far more examples of foreign propaganda on Meta and X.

there are millions of people being replaced by machines and ai who actually provide a real service and value to the population.

your point about simply being able to line the pockets of politicians to ban things is the massive issue. thats insane.

i do believe the US algos are set to run braindead addictive content to our youth. and i do think our youth is going to be much worse off. they cant maintain a 10a attention span. think about that. and i do believe chinas algos in their apps promote more substance.

Indeed, but then removing an income stream from people who make content about their bakery, coffee roasting company, reviewing movies and TV shows etc isn’t going to help with robots taking over. It’s the opposite really.

I’m in agreement there, but that’s not what they targeted with the bill. They only targeted one company who is a direct competitor to the company lobbying against it and the algorithm for instagram vs TikTok seems worse there in my experience using the apps with my kids.

eh. that money was going to be circulated around anyway. what about the businesses that don't use tik tok. feel like he money will be distributed in another way. many ways to market

I have no clue how social media works. I don't have any of them, but can't the influencer just move from tiktok to instagram?

If shopify was banned tomorrow, companies would just have to find a new platform, how is this any different?

I was never a fan of the Tin Tok ban. I actually really like the platform. However, on both sides of the aisle, the politicians has said this is a national security issue. I don't buy the National security issue if that is meant to videos being shown praising China more than another platform like Reels. However, since so many politicians which included Trump and Biden and well as the majority of Senators took the position that it is a real national security threat with information the public does not know, then it should be banned.

Is the turn around that certain backers of Trump love the platform and he has changed his stance? I don't know. It is either a big sham to ban it or it is a national security threat. Which one is it???? That governs what must be done even if it is a very popular platform.

I’m not on the platform, but it’s not the platform but rather Chinese ownership and the algorithm. If they can find a US buyer, then problem solved, correct?

yea that's a complete scam tbh. they already said they weren't taking tik tok away like that. just that the updates wouldn't take effect.

Well that’s certainly the hope for Meta and all of the members of congress who voted for the ban who hold investments in Meta…

They’re not the same though, and you can’t really transfer an audience that you have built. The influencers mostly use everything available to them but found their audience through TikTok.
