Tuesday should be a fun day on campus

I linked a video earlier; if more convenient, here is an attached link to a webpage with further discussion of specific bands and lyrics.

If you have no objection to the principle of a Catholic Church owned radio station transmitting satanic blasphemies, I can follow that reasoning to a degree.

But to suggest that this issue is fabricated or not properly documented is wholly and demonstrably false.

Compilation of Evidence
I appreciate the link. Easier to find.

And while I find the lyrics to be banal (there is literally nothing new there), I don't find any of this threatening or disturbing. Not good, sure. Unoriginal, without a doubt.

Does simply mentioning the devil cause this kind of uproar? I'm assuming the same reaction would hold if the Rolling Stones were played? Van Halen? Charlie Daniels?

My point was that this was as much an over-reaction now as its been in the past. The Catholic Church has had its own real issues. I wonder if these groups have stood in front of the Vatican and protested with such fervor.

Black Flag is great, btw...

Maybe you should change schools. There are plenty of secular schools you could associate with. Amazingly, the deeply secular schools would not even stoop to play the horrific music WSOU plays. They tend to play culturally enriching music.
Why should I leave? I’m not the one complaining about anything! If you can’t find the radio dial maybe you can find a map to somewhere else!

I’m just trying to figure out what kind of music you think is suitable for a Catholic university.
Certainly not music that celebrates the rape of virgins, the mutilation of little girls, the demonic possession of human persons, occult rituals, etc. This is what our radio station is playing. It has to stop.

It's obvious you have not watched the video Shuma posted. The problem is not just with mentioning the devil...

The video titled Satanism Promoted By Catholic University? Yes, watched some of it. Found it poorly done and laughable.

If there is another video, I'd be more than happy to review.

Give it a chance. Watch the whole video.
Seriously, just for you, I watched the entirety of the video. Just more of the same. Nothing any more or less interesting or shocking.

The video claims that this has been going on for 34 years. That's about the time I started listening. I actually stopped listening during college as my tastes in music changed.

Interesting note, the video makes sure to point out what the Cradle of Judas was (torture device). FUnny enough, the device was invented in the 16th century Spain when the institution of Inquisition was widespread and new and brutal techniques of torture were being devised.

Irony...

just wanted to say that i love seeing Pantera mentioned several times in this thread. they've been my favorite band forever, they are the reason i put CFH at the end of my screen name...which leads me to something i'd like to point out, that 99.9% of the "unholy" content in this music is just for show. image and stories. its the horror movies of music.

also wanna add im excited that Meshuggah is at work on a new album, and that Devin Townsend recently did the entire soundtrack for a BBC childrens show called "Colours".

"Poorly done" is a subjective judgement; you are entitled to that opinion. It may even make you laugh.

But the video's main purpose was to demonstrate that:

1) there is a large volume of Satanic content on WSOU

2) Those in authority at SHU and Newark are lying when they repeatedly assert that the content conforms to Catholic values

Which assertion of the above was false?

I think statement 1 is largely subjective. If we're treating Satan as a fantasy character, I'd agree. If you are treating him in the Biblical manner, its false.

Statement 2 is most likely false as most popular music doesn't conform to Catholic values. You'd need Gregorian chants and polkas on 24/7 to achieve that.

Catholics are quite tolerant. But what WSOU is playing is really beyond the pale.

No one can honestly answer that 100% definitively. However, I would think a Catholic university should promote the Catholic faith. You can disagree, but to me, a Catholic university showcasing satanic music is kinda like BLM showcasing KKK masks. It doesn't exactly make sense to the mission.

This is an incredibly confusing reply.

If you are comfortable with a Catholic Church owned station playing Satanic music, then it might be better to just come straight out and say that clearly.

As much as I profoundly disagree, I can accept that there is an underlying logic in that position.

What I find hard to accept is ridicule, prevarication and poor information.

well it was orginally commenting how we play in the devils arena, with devils on our chairs, and a step further as someone brought up were called the pirates. none of that seems to vibe either

first off thats dope. send some videos. 2nd, i dont really believe youre interacting with satan, but again im down to change my mind with some crazy videos u got

William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist, made a 2016 documentary called "The Devil and Father Amorth." You may wish to watch that.

It was made with Father Gabriel Amorth, the former chief exorcist of the Vatican. It contains the first ever permitted video tape of an actual exorcism.

It also includes interviews with psychiatrists at leading universities such as UCLA, Columbia etc.

I brought the pirates nickname to play off your NJ devil comment as it would be closer to home. But I do not believe the chair you sit in nor the mascot of the school is in direct conflict with the Catholic mission. I do not believe sitting in a chair makes someone deviate from Catholicism. I don't think a mascot convinces anyone to turn away from God. I could be wrong. I'm open to that possibility. You may be able to convince me. But my original thought is neither of those examples take people away from the schools Catholic mission. How many people have blamed Eminem for their actions? So I do believe music can impact people away from the core principles of the University.

Ok, let me speak freely.

I think this is a load of crap. Go deal with real problems in the Catholic Church as opposed to stylistic choices of a trend of music that will wane in popularity the next time the wind blows.

You've mentioned many times your indignation at our civil leaders, representatives of our nation. When these individuals blatantly violate the Constitution of the United States, are the principles of our nation suddenly and automatically revised?
They aren't revised but they want them revised.

I think this is a load of crap. Here's what happens if we follow that lead. Catholics fix yourself first. Jewish people go deal with your problems before you come complaining about with antisemiticism. Muslim's go deal with your radicals before you come out and want to talk about hate crimes. White people deal with your history before you complain about anything. Black people fix your own communities before you complain. How far do you want to go with this? Maybe no one should complain about Kevin Willard until they are able to get a D1 basketball job.

Perhaps I should be more clear: Why would the same principles that apply concerning adherence to the US Constitution not apply to adherence to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church?

You asked how devout Catholics view this issue; my answer is that it is the same as patriotic Americans view the constitution.

Why is one justified in one case but not the other?

Thank you for your honesty.

We come down to the real issue here: antipathy to the Catholic Church.

Yes as they are representatives, most often the most recognizable representatives of Seton Hall.

Of course it's facetious for, I don't care/am not bothered by any of it. I just wonder how the devout

Any feelings on what music/lyrics Seton Hall athletes listen to? Asking for a friend.
How do we all feel about the pregame warm up music played by the arena DJ. Perhaps a change to choir hymns is in order.

I was hoping, although I knew better, this would calm down. But it didn't. I will move it to LOTS by tomorrow morning so everyone who wants to continue to comment will know where it's at.

Both are justified but neither should be imposed on others.

I admire that you‘re a devout catholic, very, very few of those.

But no issues with your beloved Seton Hall glorifying rape, pillaging, and stealing by using the nickname Pirates? There are no benevolent pirates. And spare me the Holy Cross baseball story, a Pirate is a Pirate.
